Swapping & Chatting Ric & Holly's Swap II

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill----

I am "faster than a speeding bullet----".....Faster than a plane in the sky!---Faster than an Eagle diving
for his pray!---Hmmmmmmmmmm.....

Went to my Best Buy, with my copied out sheet of paper (your Post above) and asked the guy there
if they also have this camera in the store???? He reached down below the display shelf and said--OH! here it is!!!

It was tagged for $99--and I was willing to pay for it. I told him on-line it was just under $86.
He pulled it up on his computer--and said: "I can match that price!".....

He also said it was a very good camera and should do just fine for my needs...And, yes! it was also red....

I went home with a new camera! Thanks to your "nudge"......

Now to find time to look at all the tutorial CD's included. That will be a chore--I HATE reading instructions!!!
That is why I am often a bit "dense" about commonly known things--compared to people who LIKE to read
instructions and Manuals.....I do not!

Anyway--I am happy! Thanks again, Jill!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hooray! Gita, I think you'll enjoy the updated bells and whistles on it. Let me know if I should ask Jim to look out for a good price on memory for it... it's amazing the sales from time to time on 8 or 16 GB sticks now! Charge up the battery, put in your memory card, set it on "auto" and see what it can do! I think that model is a touch-screen, so hopefully the controls are fairly intuitive and you'll be able to figure otu some things just by poking around. (I know what you mean about manuals, still have to download & read up on my new camera... Jim reads manuals before he turns anything on; I turn it on and start poking around... what can I say, he is *such* an engineer!)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Ruby, I'll try to keep an eye out.

Great news, Gita. I hate manuals also.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

.I hate manuals too. I never had one on my Panasonic, just used some basic easy to find corrections, and still happy.

Good for you Gita!

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

That's super, Gita. And you should be a pro with it by the time you use it at the swap! When we see that flash of red, we'll know to smile.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill, darn it, I was looking forward to our wrestling match! ;-)

Do we usually have a separate food thread or is it discussed here?

I'm going to be late, so I'll be bringing dessert.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Oh, here's where the action is! I was lost, thinking that things had gotten awfully quiet! :)

Gonna go through and update my list later when I get home from work. If you asked me for something, I haven't forgotten you!

Holly, I would love an akebia start. Invasive or not, I love the plant :) Plus, I have some areas in my yard that are so inhospitable it keeps even the most aggressive of plants in check.

Jan- Do you have an oak-leaf hydrangea left? I have been drooling over those things for years. :)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I'll put up a food thread a bit closer to the date. Which is getting closer fast. Yeah!!!
Kubileya, Got a starter of the Akebia for you.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Yes, Kubileya, I will have an oak leaf for you.

My friend will get her list of haves together soon.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Glad to see I am just one of many that hate reading instructions or manuals.
Is that a female thing?????

When I was married--my Engineer husband lived by every word in manuals.
He was SO thorough--as he should have been given his education.

Me? I fly like a kite! If I run into an obstacle--I will ask for help
(many do not--but I have no problem asking for help). If no help is forthcoming--
I may just do what I know to do--the minimum required--and deal with it.
Like, just now, the issue with dates and years on my existing camera...So what!
I know what date and year it is!!! And--I keep lists of pictures by month and year.
"My Documents are loaded with monthly files!

Aina came over--and already 'played with my new camera" and showed me what is what...
I think the "blinders" already went in front of my eyes and brain....Go S-L-O-W-E-R....

Still--I am extremely happy to have a new camera.
A late BIrthday present from ME--to ME! FINALLY!!!!!!!!!.....:o)

Gita

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Yay for birthday presents no matter when they come. Heehee

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Gita you will love the new camera.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 6b)

Oh, I can read the manuels but I draw a complete blank on comprehension of what I read..somebody needs to sit down and show me and let me work with it while they are beside me or near by. I need simplicity. I need my glasses on to see what I'm doing and it is hard to focus when you can't see and eyeglasses get in the way taking pictures.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

pippi---

You are describing my situation to a "T"! I still haven't even looked at my new camera. G.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Oh, yes, I am in that same boat.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Ohhh, Critter, just saw a picture of the Lonicera Americana!! If you have more to spare, I would appreciate some.

Crozet, VA

Howdy ya'll.....I came here from the older thread where Pippi made a thread against her poor hubby. Pippi, I had to laugh because I can imagine the two of you fighting over plants. I can also identify because my hubby and I don't always agree on what is a necessity and what isn't either.

Sally, got you down for the yellowish creeping jenny. Donnerville, yes maam will post a picture, but upon second thought have a another request. I thought that I posted a picture, must have posted it elsewhere on another discussion. Anyway.....when I show John these bottles he commented on the hole in the neck being small. He was once again correct. These particular bottles are not the best choice for what I will need. I need the holes to be a bit larger, so please, no one rush out to Big Lots in search of these bottles. If you do happen to be out and about and see some either clear unusually shaped bottles that can be used as vases, or colored bottles with a fair sized hole in the neck, please purchase and I will reimburse you for them. Please do not pay over two dollars a bottle and all will be great.

Gita, so glad you purchased yourself a late birthday present. I kind of do a lot of shopping the month leading up to my birthday and call it gifts to myself. Anyway.....let me a post a picture of the bottles and scoot along and try to catch up with some other threads that I am behind on. Hope that everyone has a very enjoyable and productive weekend.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Ruby -- so basically you're looking for pretty "rooting vases" preferably in colored glass?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Ruby We have a Big Lots here too. I will have RIc check it out.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Roses, should be no problem to root a piece of the L. americana for you... I've been concentratign on the coral honeysuckle, because it was more reluctant to root last year and by some corollary of Murphy's Law also more in demand LOL. I'm hoping to get some Stephan's Jasmine to "take" (cuttings are still green after a couple of weeks), and I'll put your name on one of those also if I'm successful.

Ruby, so far the only thing I've noted for you is that lilac I couldn't find for you last fall... Surely you "need" a ZD rose or hot & spicy oregano or... ? I just stuck some more cuttings from Aunt Erna's lilac, and I'll put your name on one of those if I have it. :-)

I think I am caught up with requests on my "haves" post, although I haven't gone through using "find" to double-check... if you see something missing from my "promised" list for you, please let me know!

from the list that I just updated...

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

The winds have arrived---maple 'whirlies" raining down like snow.

Getting dark--I think we are in for some serious rain and T-showers tonight.

Tomorrow it is supposed to rain all day--2" predicted. we need it--but not so much at once!

Nasty looking out there.....Brrrrrrr.......scary!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Now it is pouring rain!!!!! wind blasting on the house.......

This should clear some of the humidity away. Hope all my little pots on all the tables stay put!
They are under the patio roof--so no biggie......the wind may mess with some of them, though.
G.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

gosh, that storm missed me, Gita, but something is on the horizon.
Jill you got mine right. And my coral honeysuckle is blooming like mad right now.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My coral honeysuckle & american honeysuckle are both blooming madly, one on either side of the steps down to the back patio... you can smell the sweet fragrance the moment you step out onto the deck! It's not a heavy scent like oriental lilies, and I don't remember it smelling it from more than a couple inches away in previous years -- but my plants have never been this huge or this bloom covered! I should have thought to get photos today; hopefully they'll still look good after the rains. If the demand for them exceeds my potted starts, I can always bring fresh cuttings, too, hopefully with roots... Gita started one by sticking a cutting in water, and I think she got roots in just a few days.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

This one came from Becky's swap- (couple of springs ago?) as I recall, you gave me a few cuttings and they looked pretty desperate in the next few days at my house, but one took in dirt and grew to this.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Yay! Jill!

You know--I think this Non-Winter has gotten many plants going much earlier--doing their thing.
It may be a good thing---or it may be a bad thing.....as some areas "could" still get
near freezing nights. Lets hope NOT! I am bringing all my plants outside by now.
Que serra---serra!

I know one thing I may never do again--and that is root every cutting i take off the Brugs. in October.
It is a VERY L-O-N-G time to attend to cuttings that just grow by leaps and bounds. Endless watering!
Just to have them for the Swap. October to May---YES! VERY long time.

They have, sort of, stopped growing. I think they need a bigger pot to blast forward. But not by me!
All of you will get the brugs you asked for--then, after you pot them in the BIGGER pots---
they will all just go POOOF! Brace yourselves!!!!

I tried to find the picture of my Honeysuckle cutting rooting in water--but could not. Sorry!
Yes! it did!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Ruby will keep my eyes open for some bottles for ya

there is some strange wet stuff falling from the sky, LOL....boy do we need it BAD

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Buttoneer----

Glad you two are coming to the swap!

In your 'wants" list you asked for miniature Iris. I have a nice clump of purple ones.
Some of the plants are smushed against the edging timber.
I would be willing to dig a couple up for you. Interested???

Here are some pictures from the "past" sally--you talked about the Stonecrop and
also mentioned to someone about your Big-root Geranium. Here they can see what it looks like....

--Mini Iris clump (Buttoneer---You interested?)
--Sally! Here is your Lg.-root Geranium
--Sally--the golden Stonecrop Angelina I gave you starts of (from HD.)
--Jill--Here is the picture of the Honeysuckle rooted in a glass (April 2010)

organized photos!! *swoon* I've been trying to get mine into better shape. Most are arranged by date the past few years, but that doesn't help a lot of I'm looking for a photo that could be from "any" time of year LOL. I'm not one of those people who start stories with "Back in April of 1981... oh, wait, yes I do believe it was May of that year... "

Those mini irises are so pretty! Mine are blooming now, so yours have probably started also, and that should give them enough time to finish blooming and rest for a bit if you divide them just before the swap.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Jill--

I have all my photos in "My Documents"----"My Pictures"---and then another sub-category by months.
Like--right now, I am in the April 2012 folder.
Since they all arrange themselves either chronologically or Alphabetically same years or months get clustered.

Besides all that--I keep (a cluttered) listing, in a steno pad, where what pictures can be found. This is like:
Dr. Seuss Brug--and then I make a note of all the scattered folders good shots of it can be found.
I refer to this pad and look under the plant I am trying to find a picture of and check out all the added dates..

Sometimes, when one is forced to be idle, like recovering from something, is a good time to go through
all your picture folders and start a list in a pad or note-book of where what pictures can be found.
Leave lots of room under the more popular plants--as you will be adding more photos every year.

This kind of listing works for me. I am sure those of you that are more computer savvy keep journals
of your plants and can find anything you want in those.

OK! Just a brief description of what i do. It does take time--initially--but is worth it. After that, it is just "upkeep".

Gita

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I wish I had the patience to give a name to all the pictures. Then I could find most of what I want by "searching".

Crozet, VA

Jill, my photos are arranged exactly like yours are. Join the club girl. I have wanted to start a notebook of sorts but have never found the time yet. Most times I can find what I am looking for without too much trouble.

Yes folks, am looking for colored bottles but have decided the ones from Big Lots that I purchased last week, aren't going to necessarily work due to the opening in neck not being large enough to allow the root on the Arrowhead Plant to fit comfortably. Any colored bottles with a good sized opening will work and once again....if any of you find any and will get them and save for the swap, I would be ultra appreciative to you all.

Jill, the Lilac will be sufficient. I have many lovelies from you already and space is running out in our vehicle. hahaha Thanks anyway doll.

I started potting up some of the requests yesterday afternoon. I started with the Creeping Jenny and all was well. I proceeded to the good sized pot of Prickly Pear and that is where my trouble began. I have had this pot of PP for about seven years. It came from the creek side at my folks place. Over the years it has spilled out here and there and dumb me instead of digging up the pieces that were in the earth, had the grand idea of repotting the whole pot. I thought I had gone prepared with my gloves and all, but by the time the ordeal was over, I was to spend the next couple of hours looking on line for remedies to deal with cactus needles. I knew that using tape to pull the needles out was an idea, so started there. That wasn't working too well, so I went online and read that covering the affected area with Elmer's glue and allowing it dry and then peel off would pull more of them out. That neither got them all. In fact, I have accepted the fact that I will be dealing with sore hands for some time to come.

John after the fact said that I needed leather gloves to work with it, so now I have leather gloves for tackling what I left in the pot yesterday. Not sure when I will feel up to dealing with it yet. Please, after this great sales spiel, can I talk anyone else in to taking some of this monster home with them? hahaha

I hadn't heard that Buttoneer and Bob would be attending the swap, but am very pleased to hear it now. I can tell you folks that last spring when they visited our home, she brought me a hand full of odd and exotic rootings which have now become the biggest and best of my houseplant collection. Thank you Judy.

Anyway....Yes Jen.....we too have had some of the strange looking matter falling from the sky here and the plants and I are all thrilled with it. You folks have a great day.

Ruby

Crozet, VA

I just edited my list. I hope that everyone will check and make sure if you have requested things from me, that I have you listed. If I have missed a request, please let me know and I will get things straight.

I see some requests for varigated Hosta and will have them available possibly in the fall or next years spring swap. John will not be dividing them until the fall. We only have one currently potted and that is spoken for.

Again......have a great day all.

Ruby

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

All the plants are reaching up their little mouths trying to drink all they can. I'm thankful for the liquid gold and that it's not the heavy white stuff that some folks are in for. I can hardly imagine what a mess it will be in some areas. Kind of like the Halloween snow storm.

DH really mowed yesterday and I haven't really checked near the lilac, but I am hoping, hoping he didn't cut down the ones I was eyeing to dig for the swap. I will try to check tomorrow to see that all is okay. Of course I probably should have told him my plan. Fingers crossed, people, please!!!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ruby---

I had that prickly pear cactus several years ago. Lots of 'several" years ago!
Before DG and before digital cameras.....

I think I had it for 3-4 years--in a big clay pot. It even bloomed a couple times with those big, yellow blooms.
As time went on--I realized that I could not even get near it or touch it or anything.
Those thorns are NASTY!!!!

I do not remember what I did with it????? I don't think I would have thrown it out....so I must
have given it away to someone. Good riddance!

Ruby---I did want to say that, as far as I know, you can start a whole new plant just by sticking one of the
"paddles" in a pot of soil. No need to dig up the whole plant or sections of it.

Most of my promised plants have been in 4" pots before I posted my "haves". They are all happily growing...
I have not yet even touched my plants I grew from seed!
I need to start transplanting them in slightly bigger quarters. Especially my Zinnias and my Tomatoes.

ANGELINAS????? Wowsa! I seeded a lot of them--sprinkling like S&P. They all came up within 3-4 days!
And--having done this before---they start out slow but then take off once they are planted in beds.
These plants (The Angelonias) are in the class of "fancy annuals" and cost $3-$4 a pot!
Gather seeds--and do your own!!!!

They still look tiny. No true leaves yet--but they are in--like--thimble sized potting trays.
Must divide them and pot them in at least ice-cube sized pots....:o)

Look!!!! How tiny they are!!!! Just took this photo for you all....

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Buttoneer, I would like an ostrich fern and some creeping jenny, please.

I'm also interested in a Rhipsalis and Bryophyllum, but I'm not sure which variety.

I'm bringing extra sedum angelina and sedum John Creech, if you're interested.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

*ouch* Ruby. I had a piece of one like that from Gita, and I never touched it, because it was scary! It grew along quite happily until the winter the pot got overturned (by what brave/foolish critter, one wonders?) and dried out because I didn't see that it was sideways.

Buttoneer, I'd love a hardy sedum or semp... or a non-hardy little one that Joyanna can pot up for her windowsill or add to her fairy garden this summer. Thanks! Oh, and you may already have these from a seed mix I gathered, but I can dig up an extra columbine for you from some of the bigger clumps out there... I have dark purple, magenta, pale lavender, and white (maybe a tinge of lavender in it) blooming now, and this year I really really am going to mark which clump is which color! LOL

annapolis, MD(Zone 7b)

Buttoneer I am glad you will be able to come to swap. Hope hubby is up for it, too and continues on the mend.
I'd love a mini hosta and mini Solomons seal pretty please. Hope there is something on my list that strikes your fancy. I'll put you down for a black hen and chicks. OK?

Ruby, that's just awful about cactus spines ! Really, I can live without prickly pear but Wayne wanted to try one...so one pad will suffice. I am forewarned.

It is exciting that so many people are coming out of the woodwork to attend this swap. Makes me wonder whi else is MIA that we could nudge...Doc?foxy? .....and "new people? speedybean? Gracye? ....Is Pippi coming?

Happy, I don't think their is an end time posted to this event!Glad it stays light so long now and even longer in a month!

I guess after plants we all get to share good food! Some one tell me about the "gift table" and wether there will be one...Thanks.

This message was edited Apr 22, 2012 7:21 PM

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Judy--
There is ALWAYS a gift table!!!!

It is NOT mandatory--but just a fun thing.. If you bring something--you can choose something
from the table when your name is called....Usually,, they have some kind of a names called set-up.

Jill likes to play a BINGO game. Not sure what Holly will do. But it is always FUN!

DO bring a small something--garden oriented. Or NOT! The $$ limit is usually under $5.
Let your creativity GO!!!! Even a pair of gloves is OK! Or a plant you only had one of to share.

Don't sweat it! It is Chill and Eat and Enjoy kind of a Day.
