Tropical Plants and Gardens #117
Rita...that Pinecone Brom is toooooooooooooooo cool !
Glad to see you posting, thought we were gonna have to send out a search party for you.
Good morning, everyone! Rita, those are really, really pretty!
Rita, Did you see the cutting of the V. monstera on the steps with the cat behind it a couple of weeks ago?
Hello you'all
mjsponies, I will be MIA for a little while longer, it is too cold to leave my plants this weekend.
Thanks on the pinecone Brom. I bought it from Tropicflora and the others from Shirleyk e-bay.
How are your Hoyas doing? Did you get the cuttings to root for you? I have the three cuttings that you sent, putting out new leaves, Oh Yeah!
Kay Jones Thanks, are you getting spring fever yet?
Homer, thanks for posting those pictures, it shows that you know what you are doing when it comes to growing Aroids. The plant looks much better than the mother plant.
Did your yellow variegated Monstera ever recover from the sun damage last summer? My fingers are crossed, hoping that we have as mild a summer as the winter we are experiencing now.
Rita, OF COURSE I have spring fever - I move 'em in, I move 'em out, I cover 'em, I uncover 'em!!!!
Rita, OF COURSE I have spring fever - I move 'em in, I move 'em out, I cover 'em, I uncover 'em!!!!
Me too ! That's what we did today...there is a little path in the greenhouse, and PJ's all over the yard and the barn and extra bathroom/bedroom is stuffed...2 COLD nights ahead of us here...then nice again...gotta love Fl......I still threaten to move farther south......got water heating up now to put in jugs to take out to the greenhouse to stick int he corners to keep those cold pockets warmer.
Rita, Yes the Hoya cuttings you sent are all rooted. I emailed Todd cause I want one of those same Hoya's we I'D for you but I didn't hear back from him. If you do get by there grab one for me and I'll pay you for it OK !! Wait till this summer, I'll have about 2 doz. new ones that I can send you cuttings of....I've been a busy girl.
RITA, I AM coming to your house and soon.
Christi
Rita, so wonderful to have you back, we've missed your interesting pictures. Is that a breadfruit in the second pic above?
I've got the back yard all tented up, and some of my orchids in the house tonight, too. The minute you let your guard down, those cold fronts barrel on through again! Luckily I got distracted and didn't yet start spreading around fertilizer. Maybe next week.
If only this cold snap will reduce the pollen count from the oak trees a bit, but it will probably zap all my mango blooms, too. Arg. The ups and downs of (semi)Tropical gardening.
Martha, I'm moving with you - but, I understand Miami has it's weather spells, too.
Rita, I have the V. Monstera 'Marmarata' in the garage, and it is dormant along with everything else! I think it was the lack of humidity, high temperatures and Monsoon rains last summer that really did it in .This will be a new spring and summer and hopefully will be upper 80's with 70% humidity. Got a replacement for the Alocasia Sarian and A. Zebrina 'Tigrina Superba' that I lost last year, a few weeks ago. Everything is starting to come to life in the upstairs 'Greenhouse' (I mean bathroom).
Great growing everybody along with some beautiful pictures! Looking forward to some huge Aroids by the end of September; and I will say it again... Can't wait for SPRING!!!
Hi Everyone!
Kay Jones, your hard work will pay off this spring when you will be the first in your neighborhood to have color this spring.
mjsponies, that is good news regarding the cuttings. I will be proud to pick you up a few Hoyas on my next trip, I will d-mail whenever we decide to go. He never answers my e-mail either, but will be happy to talk whenever you call. There is a phone # on his website, he is a very nice person.
It seems as if we might get a proper id soon on this one, if you look real hard you might see a few buds.
LouC, I am planning to be here for at least another year. I am planning a slow and stress free transition to our new home. I still have a few pine trees and shrubs that died from the drouth to dispose of, that will not be replaced. Needless to say, my perennial garden is a horrible mess.
Dyzzy, back at you, I appreciate your pictures and the knowledge that you share with all of us. You are a treasure, Thanks!
The fruit is a guava. I do have a breadfruit tree but it is at my place in Belize. I am looking for a dwarf mango tree. I hope that there was no damage to the blossoms on your tree.
Is that a variegated Basil or a veriagated Chalice vine in your last picture?
Finally got done instaling all 6 of my $3 pot hangers, now holding Bromelads.
homer1958, I am looking forward to seeing pictures of your work to inspire me. I have lost so many EEs, I wish I had enough sense to give up.
I have a frog picture for you on one of my favorate bromeliads. It doesn't look like much right now but it has spiked at about 3-4 ft and stays in bloom for months.

Nice froggy, Rita! That's a variegated basil 'Pesto Perpetuo' in the picture. It does well here, but unlike some of the more vigorous ones, doesn't go through the summer too well. I'm going to try to start some cuttings of it to see if I can keep it going in pots inside the pool cage, where the sun is just that little bit gentler.
I had a heaven-sent helper appear at my door today - young fellow from down the street who has lost his job and was desperate for a day's work offered to weed my jungle for me. I carefully asked if he "really" was prepared to take on this task, and sure enough, he's out there doing a wonderful job. It was just this week, I was thinking I needed to put an ad out for a garden helper. Life is good! Now I wonder if I can talk him into coming back to help me plant . . ..
Did not get as cold as they predicted here last night, so the Shooting Stars are continuing to 'shoot'. Dwarf white cannas blooming on the south side of the house, too.
All my blooming and leafing plants are BLACK! :(
All i can say is WOW on these pictures... You guys sure can grow the tropicals like nobodies business! Perfect spot for the tree frog! Those toes are stuck to the leaf like stink on ....!
Beautiful Anthurium cubense! What's the other guy Rita?
Black from the frosts Kay?
Yep - we had 29 at 6 a.m. this morning, and coupled with the 27 degrees we had yesterday morning, not much is left untouched.
Happy Valentines Day to everyone!
dyzzy, Lucky you, finding a good helper. That is a perfect shot of your canna.
I know that you will get the basil to root for you, you did so well with all the cuttings that I traded with you. The only plant that was not shown is the variegated Brug. Did it perish?
KayJones, I am so very sorry about your misfortune, whatever does not recover, we will try to replace for you if we can. We are always taking a licking but we keep on ticking! I lost my fruiting 8 ft orange tree a few days ago from causes unknown.
The first two Ti plants were given up for dead. The Crotons lost all their foliage, from last year's bad winter, not perfect, but I am so happy that they recovered.
Rita, I think I'm the one that's worse off than the plants - it's not pretty our there! They will most likely recover just fine - I just wanted to gripe a bit! HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY to everyone!!!!
Rita, every cutting and start you have sent me has taken off and is ready to get big and beautiful this spring. Except sad to say Maya, the variegated brug. I had a start from you, and later a start from Debra as well. Neither of them made it. I've also bought an expensive start of one called B. 'Snowbank' and that languished and finally died as well. I am mystified - could it be too much heat? Too strong sun? (it's the only brug I kept in light shade). The purple firespike is in full bloom and getting more beautiful by the day.
I have not forgotten that I owe you another start of my dwarf water lily 'Dauben'. The pond clean-up day is scheduled for this weekend, so I will be up to my ears in muck and re-potting the waterlilies and lotus. If the weather stays warm I could send any time - let me know if there's anything else you need a start of?
Does anyone have a plant or cuttings of this beauty for trade:
Cantua buxifolia - red blooms
Rita, Do you mind if I post that "Guy" on another tropical site I frequent? I think someone will definitely know what it is!
I see Rachel has answered the question! I guess it would help to read all the posts...

Hope everyone had a wonderful Valentines Day.. have enjoyed the pictures, good to see them.
Snow is melting here, rain tommorrow, go figure.
KayJones, your plants will revive after a couple nites cold bite, right?
Yes, Deb - I'm hoping so!
Rita if you are looking for a dwarf mango tree you should go to pine island nursery website and look at what they call 'condo' mangos. they are mangos that can be maintained at 6-10 ft. and can grow in containers. i would recommend the mallika or lancetilla. i am sure they ship as well. not to mention that they have just about every tropical fruit you are looking for. i have many fruit trees from them and they are all doing well.
just a few more flowers starting. the queens wreath and shell ginger
Hello Everyone!
RachelLF, you are a sight for sore eyes, I missed you! Thanks for the ID on the Syngonium wendlandii. I will be going back to that nursery soon. If you would like to have a plant, they were only $17.
homer, you are most welcome to use the picture If you desire, but I think that Rachel has nailed the ID in her previous post.
Joeswife, I hope that you had a wonderful Valentine's day. We forgot about it until the last minute and as not to forfeit my present, I ordered a Bromeliad. It will probably be a week before I can show her off. What did you score?
dyzzy, I could never get Brug. Snowbank to grow either but Maya is a treasure. I can start another for you if you like. You can mail the water lily whenever you feel like doing so and can you please send me a few pieces of your red firecracker plant? They were always so lovely in the background of your pictures..
Candela, I am admiring all your orchids with one eye closed, lol. I do not want another obsession, yours are always so lovely. Thanks for the Website, I did a quick once-over and saw a few more fruit trees I would like to have.
This purple Firespike plant is one that keeps on giving from that little start you shared with me. Quite a few people in Texas are growing it.
Great pictures! Thanks for sharing! So glad that we can post more than one per message!
Rita.....Brazil??????? REALLY? OMG! How beautiful that must be! Can't wait to see those pictures!
Jeanne
Rita,
Not only do you have a green thumb, but both your hands are grren too. You have the most beautiful plants and always so healthy looking!!
What is the second one in the pic 8164? It looks soft and fuzzy.
I've about given up on ever seeing my Purple Firespike bloom....it got frozen again this year. I got it thru the first freeze but the second one the cover blew off one side and that was enough to do in the buds. I wish it bloomed earlier like the Red one does. Oh well...maybe next year.
Rita I'd like to know what the fuzzy leaved plant is also ? Very cool looking.
Dancing Bones is all lit up , looks like little lights hanging from it. And the second pic is one of my favorite Orchids...
