I think I may have found my philo. It looks like it may be Red Emerald.
Tropical Plants and Gardens #117
Hello Everyone!!
Joeswife, Its amazing how healthy your plants look! I am fighting bugs again.
I have a Iron Cross Shamrock, if you would like a start of those, let me know.
Sunkissed, love the Bird of Paridise, Great Shot!!
Tommy, How long will those blooms last on your Gorgeous Orchid plant?
Dyzzy, Are those new orchid plants? Your pictures are pulling me in, I find myself looking at Orchid websites.
ardesia, I have always admired your views what a nice place to explore! At least you don't have alligators, caymans or crocodiles, I hope.
homer, the totems are made from 4" x 4"s or 2 2" x 4"s screwed together, usually discarded lumber, wrapped with burlap, stapled and tied with twine.
The plant is Anthurium pedatoradiatum
RachelLF, thanks, the verrucosum came from Millers Tropicals.
GAGirl1066,Great find! the Philo. Red Emerald is a fast grower, the bright red leaves makes this cultivar very attractive. I purloined a cutting from my niece in Florida a few years ago.
Abyssinian bananas getting a little sun and fresh air.
prita,
About 2 weeks if kept cool.
Rita, those are, indeed, new orchids. Cymbidiums are terrestrials that I'm going to summer out in the garden, in sunken pots so I can control the drainage better. They're very robust plants that aren't fussy like most orchids. Take normal fert and only need watering once a week or so. Also they like some morning sun.
I'm experimenting this year with terrestrial orchids in my shady border area, and I have three colors of Spathoglottis, Phaius (aka Nun's Orchids) in 3 different forms, and a yellow Bletilla coming also. It's been my ambition to make something bloom in the beautiful shifting shade under my huge oak tree, and so between the begonias with their gorgeous leaf markings, and the orchids which should put on a show for most of the warm season, I think it's going to look pretty out there this year.
I had to laugh about your comment that my yard always is neat and tidy. My new garden helper and I have now sent about 3 tons of prunings and weeds to be composted. Thank goodness the County picks up garden waste for us each week!
Rita, Love that Rhapis excelsa! Which species is this?
It's amazing how many plants we have alike.

Rita, beautiful begonia, it looks like it might be 'Sophie Cecile' and she is a winner.
Lots of alligators in the neighborhood but they stay in the lakes. The only time they might come over to the salt water is when they get iccky during a summer drought. The migrate to the salt water to clean the algae off themselves. I have only seen one or two in 12 years.
Elaine, We are doing the annual battle with the wax myrtles here and I have hauled off 7 loads so far to our neighborhood drop off. Our country does not re-cycle it which is so lame. I do compost all I can but there are just too many WM branches. Such fun living in the jungle!
I sure am enjoying all the beautiful orchids pictured. I have always been fearful about trying orchids, but your photos are pulling me in to wanting to try some. I have a shady area under my live oak that I sure would like to see something more that just green. It gets first morning sunlight and then shady the rest of the day. Might be a good place to try some.
Oh yeah, begonias! I've been so busy with the yard clean-up I haven't looked at them for 10 days.
First pic is 'Don Miller' with 'Alba odorata' lurking behind. Second is 'Sophie Cecile' and third is 'Corallina du Lucerna' - all from cuttings I got from Alice and all doing great - thanks again!
Fourth is 'Bubbles' happily blooming (I divided the start I got for Christmas, so I have two plants!) and last is 'Good 'n Plenty' which is the other one I got from my kids as a gift. It's not quite as lusty as the others but look at those gorgeous red leaf reverses!
Tommy, can't hardly wait for pictures!!!!
LOL
Boooya!
Wow I had to look that one up Tommy...very interesting. :)
You guys are a hoot!
Oh Yea!
Alice,
I've had problems uploading pics on several occassions and I've seen others say the same..
Thinking it's a software problem with the site..too many different people having the same issue.
I tried 4-5 days ago 5 times and then I said; "Fagettabowtit"
Thanks, I thought I was the only one. I see where there is some discussion that perhaps the pictures are too big and the software can't re-size them fast enough. Guess they will work it out.
Tropical nut, do you really have that stinky thing in your house???????? (I admit it is cool, but......)
tropicalnut777,
It is now 4 pounds 4 oz. I have a digital postal scale I recently bought.
She is now 21 1/2 " tall. Growing an inch to an inch and a half per day.
I also have 2 slightly smaller corms but they haven't started up yet.
Thank Melody, I thought that might be the issue. The formosa lily I posted above is 4.58mb and 4,342 wide. No wonder.
Hell, I don't know how to resize!!! Guess i will have to get tech. support (DW) in the A.M. to help out! It was an early to bed, 2 Martini night!
Goodness, way past my bedtime......see you tomorrow.. ....Goodnight Johnboy, Good night, MaryElen.
ardesia.. yep..i sure does.. :) lol ..smell isnt really bad.. there is a smell
but not what i thought it would be .. its sort of a sour smell.. lol
tommy.. very cool.. ya..when mine started to send up flower spike.. they really
grew fast.. tallest one got 51 inches..
?? what do u potting soil do u put yours in for their vegetative growth??
ive posted over on aroid forum..same question to guy growing A.titanum..
and im sure same as for konjac..
i plan to use my own compost, leaf compost, perlite, coir, and thinking of mixing in
crushed lava rock/sand..
again..great pic tommy
I had one planted in the garden years ago and the neighbors were ready to assassinate me. The "eau de" was reminiscent of pure, well aged carrion. The turkey vultures were even circling over the yard.
777
Sounds like a good water retentive, well draining mix to me!
tropicalnut777,
I use regular potting mix (miracle grow or Pro-Mix) with a LOT of perlite mixed in for drainage/aeration. They get early morning sun then bright filter light the rest of the day.
She's 22 1/2 " this morning.
much thanks all.. LOL ardesia... :) i have noticed the cats licking their lips
more since blooms opened.. i wonder that has anything do to with it...:) LOL
ive noticed from a friend over at other garden site..grows a TON of passiflora.. he puts alot
of perlite in his mix..ive bumped up my use of amount of perlite in last few yrs..
like homer said.. we need water retentiveness..but also balanced with good drainage..
from readings..seems thats the ticket with sucess with amorphs..
YEA on your konjac's growth tommy!!!!!
? you keep yours in the house/greenhouse??
She starts in the house and goes outside after last frost. I WISH I had a greenhouse!
Went outside last evening to encounter that wonderful fragrance of Brugmansia - sure enough 'Monster White' which was just planted in its new home on Thursday afternoon has broken out into bloom yet again. I don't think it has missed a month of blooming since it was just a baby. It's a blooming machine!
The Shooting Star clerodendron is just about over its peak. Delighted to find that the huge Tiger Swallowtail butterflies find it very attractive. I was hoping for more hummingbirds, though. Maybe I need to sit out there and watch for a while . . . what a hardship!
Tommy; you, 777, me and a WHOLE lot of other folks on here, wish we had greenhouses! LOL
Ahhhh, then you start out with a small greenhouse, then you realize you need a larger greenhouse....
Roflmol............and a bigger wallet ! We have a 10x12 and when it get's really cool/cold, my SO who is a gorgeous 6"4 185 lb man swears he won't go in there cause it's constant ducking to avoid hitting his head on the plants hanging from the center eve which is about 10FT. He's been making noises lately about a bigger one, and I've been saying WELLLLLLLL YEAH, that WOULD be nice.....He's as bad as I am, so not all the blame can be put on me.
I have a greenhouse, but ya can't get past the door - it's jam-packed, floor to ceiling, with plants. I have a hoop 'house' beside the greenhouse - packed out. I have a 20'x20' Florida room, covered in 6 mil. plastic, packed to the hilt, so even with all this covered 'greenhouse' space, I still don't have enough room. I have shelves in the guest bedroom suite, with plants stacked on them - it's truly a sickness, but I just keep acquiring more plants.
You are my kind of woman, Kay.
