Growing plants Cardboard cartons

Hyderabad, India(Zone 12b)

Hi friends please tell me if this arrangement will work for growing plants. This cardboard carton is about 30"X25"x20" and I have covered it with thick polythene (see the white cover in pic) for preventing the cardboard from soaking which can damage the cardboard.I want to fill it with a mix of sand (2 parts)+Vermicompost(1 part)+Coco peat(2 parts) and I want to grow small plants like Lavender or Basil which require less water.

Please add any of your suggestions as to which plants I can grow and if at all this arrangement works.

You can grow plants in almost any container as long as you provide good drainage....You could position the cardboard box in the appropriate location, remove the bottom of the box, line with plastic and add drainage holes to the plastic liner sitting on the ground. That way water would flow out and the box would be protected from the wet soil. We have used old cooking pots, plastic containers, clean metal cans, etc but you must drill or poke drainage holes in the bottom of any container used.

yes thanks, I'll show if Marjoram/Mentha spicata/Cilantro which I'm planning to grow in it does well.

Good luck, Ganesh. I hope they do well for you.

(I don't think basil requires less water; lavender yes.)
