Daily piccies vol 427

Downy readying for a suet snack. These little birds have no manners whatsoever. They gobble up the suet I provide for them, then peck holes in my buildings!! LOL

Burd, AWESOME!!! I'm aching to see a Snowy Owl. What a great picture and what a wonderful experience. I would love to sit on a Barn roof with fun birding people and watch a Snowy. Totally awesome!

My Burrowing Owl was a lifer too and I had 2 more lifers that day -- Lark Buntings and a Short-eared Owl. We were parked on the side of a country road watching Sandhill Cranes flying against the last of the red and purple setting sun when we heard something in the brush right behind us. We don't know if it was in that brush by the car the whole time or if it flew across the road and through the brush, but that Short-eared owl was right there! The moon was almost full and pretty high in the sky so the prairie was well lit and so was that owl. We got great views of it before it disappeared at the far end of that prairie. It was the perfect end to a really great day. Owls are just magical!

Granny, I see you just posted and what cuties! Nice shot of that Downy. Hope I'm not interrupting your flow.

Marlton, NJ

Love the Snowy Owl Burd!

Hi GG, Yep thats a House Finch. I'd like to have more visits by the Purple Finch too. Sweet pics of the Titmouse and Downy!

(Zone 5a)

I am soo behind.

Countrymom, I had that same question. What I learned was any meat that may have garlic or onion should not be used as it can cause anemia in birds. So if you have onion in your pot roast, just pitch it. I cook most meats with onion and garlic, so about the only grease I have is bacon. The woodpeckers like that!

I too have been aching to see a Snowy. I am trying not to get my hopes up too much, but I know in a normal year, it would be next to impossible.

I know this picture should belong in the bad picture thread, but I really like it. I had been taking pics of the Downy woodpecker and had seen the activity of the house sparrows. I wasn't even trying for a shot like this, but the timing of that minor delay was just right. When I looked out the window again, Downy was still there and eating in peace.

Got behind, I loved all your photos!

This red-tailed hawk has been here several days now and continues to harass the robins and waxwings.

We couldn't believe our eyes when we watched two squirrels chasing each other up this pine tree. The hawk must not have been hungry because he just watched them.

Chillybean - Thanks for the info. I don't cook with onions, but the broth I use does have spices in it. Good point. Great action photo, Chillybean.

ducbucln - That hawk is beautiful ! What a great picture !

GrannyGrunt - Vibrant cardinal ! So pretty. Amazing to have green grass in mid January. No snow here in Ohio either. Not that I'm complaining :)

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh My. I've been lurking, but so much to catch up on that I really can't. So let's just say, well done all!

On Sunday I had a Common Redpoll, the first in about 3 years.
Hopefully more to come this winter.

I can't leave this thread for very long, it fills up very fast. I still enjoy coming in and admire some of your birds.

Countrymom, and GG, wish I could give you the recipe for my bird cake, but I can't follow a recipe properly. I just threw in, what came to mind .

GG, you won't be able to swipe any Purple finch from my yard, this time of year. You'll have to go out in the woods to find them. ;) Nice sharp shots of the Cardinal you got, it's a lovely bird.

Mount Pleasant Mills, PA(Zone 5a)

The woods will be fine. Be there just as soon as I get through winterizing my broom.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

LOL GG.
