December dinners

I was thinking the same thing, Jumper!!!

Congrats!!! I, too, love the name.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I went to my brothers, I made chinese chicken wings, BBQ ribs, garlic red skinned mashed potatoes and wheat bread here. Then I diced up zuccini, summer squash, sweet onions, garlic, broccoli and carrots which my brother stir fried in his wok. :) For dessert I made a gingerbread cake with whipped cream.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Sounds like the gang here would like that. I repeat, it's so nice to come here and not have to struggle with new ideas for dinner.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Cooking up black barley for the first time. Got it at Whole Foods last weekend. New store in Fairfield that I hadn't ever been to and it is amazing - like a mall inside. Of course everything is quite expensive - this IS Fairfield County after all. What is surprisingly reasonable is the bulk items. I noticed mixed heirloom beans in a bin and thought - why don't I just buy a hand full of those and sort out the ones I want to plant instead of buying multiple seed packets? I will do it next week.

Thomaston, CT

Sounds like a great store! I roasted a chicken today with stuffing, mashed rutabaga, & peas....since my brother & sister are both sick, I'm about to drag the whole meal over to my Mom's.......should last her a few days...

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

holy cow.. I just watched the big waste that was on food network.. the chefs had to create dishes out of food that has been deemed as waste from stores & farms... I am shocked at the amount of food we throw out in this country.. and perfectly good food too.. if you guys get a chance watch that.. I am so mad they can't put that food in the food pantries .. way too many hungry people out there

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

May not want to watch it, stuff like that just ticks me off....

Friends' dad volunteers at a mission and they do have local restaurants donating food so not sure if the laws vary by area or if these soup kitchens aren't asking or the restaurant owner's not willing????

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, yes, yes! That is why one of my fave charities is City Harvest. They go to restaurants and food suppliers all over the greater NYC area and pick up leftover good food and distribute to those who need it. I will check if a new restaurant I am considering participates.

This is a great series on the Smithsonian Channel that talks about this in the NY episode. I believe you can now watch full episodes online.

The episode talks about this group that ones around picking through the trash for good, nutritional food.

Once the food leaves the kitchen, the restaurant is required, by law, to consider it "compromised." (Customers could contaminate anything.)

The solution is simple, if not "high society": encourange restaurant patrons to bring "doggie bags" or plastic food containers, for ALL leftovers, including rolls, and anything that would get thrown away. The "Zip Bags" for food storage are terrific.

In 1969 (as kids), I ridiculed my older sister for not only wrapping the leftover rolls that were automatically placed on the large restaurant table, but also the un-used butter. My sister said, "they have to throw it away, anyway!"

Old Wall Street saying: I wasn't wrong, just "early."

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

BA they were showing crops, meats and breads just tossed because of a bruise.. stores & distributors are throwing away perfectly good food every day.. the one farm made me so sad.. said they won't be able to sell the corn because it was right after the hurricane and it was on the ground because of the wind.. and no one will self pick corn that is on the ground.. you had to see the compost pile.. I saw a big salad.. the chicken and turkey people can't sell a bird with a broken wing or torn skin.. they go in the garbage.. all the off size eggs.. we really need to change what we think is good and not good.. I was truly sickened watching all that food go to waste

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I don't think the problem is the leftovers from the table, I personally don't know anyone who doesn't leave with their own food, but the kitchen has leftover food that wasn't served to anybody, the problem is when they throw that away

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

they are re running it on the 14th & 15th if anyone wants to dvr it

Thomaston, CT

Yes, very disheartening to see the waste....when my parents went to FL in Feb., they would go to the farms for tomatoes....many just rotted on the vine, because there weren't enough pickers.....

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

a lot of the leftover food that wasn't served in restarants they have to throw away by law. They don't like doing it either, but the health depts. mandate it .

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I was at a restaurant that reused bread from the tables, I saw them take a basket from the table and put it back with the rest. Gross.

Thomaston, CT

Eeek....I hope it wasn't one that Laurie took me to.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yuck!!

EWWWWWWWW

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

I worked in restaurants for years while I was starting my own business during the day. Most of them were moderate to pricey and there was only one that had nothing that I would say "eewwwww" to. That was the "Sea Shack" on the border of Hackensack and some other towns in Bergen County, NJ. George, the owner, was a fanatic about "fresh" and "clean:.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Good to hear too bad I'm never in that area

The only restaurant that hubby saw that you can eat off the floor in the kitchen is Panico's in New Brunswick
He's worked in a lot of restaurants doing the a/c or refigeration and most he'll never eat at

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yeah he sees things none of us should see

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

YA! gotta say grace over those meals!!!
