Let's use this thread to talk about holidays, any and all of the holidays. What we're doing, what we're planning, etc
Let's see if we can keep this one going till next year.
All things holiday
I am still in shock that Thanksgiving is this week.
Kids only have 2 days of school.
I have to do all my shopping tomorrow
I STILL can't decide what to do about Turkey!
eat some?
LOL
This year was the first time I did not get a free turkey, our grocery store wasn't running that promo this year and the other one I go to, I didn't spend enough $ there
My cousin is baking the turkey for me, I am baking the kugli, pies, mashing rutabaga, making cranberry sauce....my sister is bringing appetizer, sweet potatoes, & green beans....just praying my brother is here with us, not trying to drive to Rochester......
I'll be contributing: mashed potatoes, cranberry something and i' m going to try a Brussels sprout recipe that my DIL requested. Her folks are coming in from KY late on Wed. Also, her sister is arriving tomorrow night from TN which will surprise her. She misses her family especially around the holidays.
Me too(miss my family that is)
My Thanksgiving will be small this year. Not one grandchild will be here....im bumming!! Tiffany, Michael & kids will be go to his mother's this year. Nichole, Shawn & girls are going up North to do a dinner with old friends. My brother is going to his daughter's house but coming here after. It's his 64 birthday Thanksgiving Day. ^_^ Would of been my Mom's 91'st birthday too.
Aww Celeste, I miss big Thanksgivings too.
My sisters birthday is also on Thursday.
We're having a late dinner so the kids can go to Lindseys parents too.
My son & his family always spend Thanksgiving at the farm with my DILs family....sometimes they stop here in the late afternoon when my stepdaughter & her husband arrive.....Lesley & Mitch love to see the kids.....
My Grandma's Birthday was Thanksgiving, too! And I miss big Thanksgivings also: GM, GP eight aunts and uncles. spouses and all my cousins. Three or four big turkeys Grandma did two, one in basement stove where all the home canning was done, and Aunt Lydia who lived in upstairs apt and Aunt Dorothy who lived across the alley. I loved how the women all wore aprons and that they let us girls help peel potatoes and set the tables with the good dishes. None of us were "guests" but all pitched in to create a feast, a family greater than the sum of its parts. At some point in the day long gathering we would all put on our coats and assemble in the backyard for a family portrait. One year there were pictures of just all the men, and another of the women. Most of the lively adult conversation was in German which most of us first generation kids understood by gesture look and tone! So, I am thankful for the strong peasant stock I came from and their heartiness and spirit and grateful for memories of same to pass on and enjoy and new guests at our tables!
Sounds like a lot of fun, Coleup!
Yes, it does sound like you have wonderful family memories to treasure! Our Thanksgivings have always been on the smaller side, because we never had much extended family in the area. I still cook the same big feast even if it's just me and Hank, as it sometimes is down here. We love to have lots of leftovers and a break from cooking for a few days! We will have 5 or 6 this year. Thankfully, my neighbor will do the mashed potatoes, because both Hank and I have tendonitis and carpal tunnel in our dominant hands/arms at the same time. We couldn't figure out how we would peel the potatoes. LOL
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
Louise
First time we will be all alone on T-day. A bit depressing.
Anyone ever read A Child's Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas? Just got it in my latest additions to the collection. Never read it.
Anyone planning anything special for Flag Day?? ^_^
Can't remember last time I paid for a turkey. Supermarket has the deal each year and at Columnia we always got either a turkey or $ for one.
Just flying the flag for flag day
Anyone have the secret to super moist stuffing that is NOT cooked in the bird????
Prep time: 15 minutesCook time: 45 minutesServes: Makes 8 servings
This is a great recipe for stuffing. Delicious enough for Thanksgiving, but easy enough for any day of the week.
Ingredients
•1 pound Bob Evans Savory Sage or Original Recipe Sausage Roll
•1 large onion, diced
•3 stalks celery, diced
•1 (14 ounce) package cubed stuffing
•1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
•2 1/2 cups chicken broth
•1/2 cup melted butter
Directions
In a large skillet over medium heat, crumble sausage. Add onion and celery and cook, stirring occasionally until sausage is brown. In a large bowl, place cubed stuffing. Add sausage mixture. Sprinkle with poultry seasoning. Pour broth and butter over the top and toss to combine. Spoon mixture into a 9 x 13 inch baking dish; cover. Bake at 350F for 45 minutes.
You can add half a cup or more of dried cranberries to this is you like.
Also, if you can't find BOB EVANS I use JIMMY DEAN W/SAGE.

Savory sage sausage is in my fridge, mmm.
That sounds yummy....Victor, don't feel depressed about a small Thanksgiving.....maybe there's someone from your church or neighborhood who would like to come....my Dad would always bring someone from his Lithuanian club.....usually a single, elderly man (who didn't speak English) to holiday dinners....as a child I thought this was an invasion of our house, but as an adult, I see the extreme kindness.....and looking over old photos, we can never identify at least one sitting at our table.....
Hey Victor, just a reminder for next year...
The third Saturday of November has been designated "World Toilet Day"
http://www.wateraid.org/uk/get_involved/world_toilet_day/default.asp
Put it in my calendar!
Don't have any sausage in the house, will def try that next year
We use turkey sausage in ours.
Going to see the musical 'White Christmas' with a friend on Friday
Cool!
Wish I'd known, Victor...you could have hustled on down and joined us!
Am shopping for Christmas plants today....
Still had a good time, Louise - thanks!
What your family's Christmas traditions???
Every year we spend Christmas Eve with hubby's family and then it's just us Christmas Day
We leave here the day before Christmas Eve to go to one of our son's houses where we stay until late Christmas Eve. Then we go to one of our daughter's house where we have Christmas brunch. Christmas afternoon we go to one of our nephew's house. It's really funny because the whole family moves from one place to the other so we all see each other every day in a different place.
Our tradition is a family reunion near Easton PA, but this year we reversed it and went at Thanksgiving instead. Less commotion because the dogs could all play outside, and more helpful to the college search process. (One DD is now considering Lehigh for biology and Latin, the other was welcomed with open arms at Haverford but she isn't applying now. Makes me think of the Goldwinism, "I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member.") Next year, we'll probably start new holiday traditions. We also had to reverse our holiday visits with local friends.
We have everyone over on Christmas day.
visit my in-laws
Christmas eve at a niece's house. It all depends on where we are. Sometimes we travel to visit grandies. This year we will be at our son's around the corner. Will see another son in January. Will go to another son at Easter.
Sounds like you have a son for every holiday, Jan!
Hee hee!
So nice to have a large family.
Small gathering with friends on Christmas Eve, then off to 10:00 service at church. Christmas morning breakfast at son's house, get to see the kids opening too much stuff....then dinner at the Mayflower Inn..there will be 16 of us this year.....
