Hi there. For some reason I'm not seeing the pictures posted. I wonder...

could be a kink in the system or something. how are your hydrangeas doing?

I would love bamboo sculpting but even on 2 1/2 acres my friends here tell me not to plant them outside. My friend's brother had a big drama with bamboo invading his yard and they had to dig a four foot deep trench and fill it with concrete to stop it.
I had no idea that bamboo would be so problematic. In fact I love the idea of planting bamboo around my fence--obviously the farthest away from the house. It would have 1/2 acre on each side to grow into.
I tried posting pics of the mimosa larger tree plus the loops and knots. I will try it again with new pics.
Every so often I push one too far in bending it but they have so far recovered great. It's sort of an "accidental grafting" lesson.

The hydrangeas that I over pruned are growing back wonderfully. I can see now about the over pruning and the flowers...I "had to" buy another hydrangea (about double the size of the 2 I put in last fall). All of the hydrangeas I saw this time out were pink.. It's funny that when I was a kid and saw these plants at my grandmothers house I didn't remember their seasonal issues nor that they droop every night and look great the next morning. I still call them "grandmother plants".
How is your garden doing by now? You must have settle on an idea from the many ideas you were drawing...what it is? Can we see pictures please?

There are different types of bamboo--running bamboo is the type that you need the trench & the concrete for. Clumping bamboos don't spread like that so if you like the idea of bamboo I'd look into some of those. There should be a ton of them that would be hardy in your area.

ecrane, do you know if the "good luck" bamboos in Chinese markets are hardy? yeye i think you can make wonderful screens with clumping bamboo. if you want an alternative (for the look -not the sculpting) try parlor, cat, or bamboo palms.
i love that you named hydrangeas "grandmother plant". that is a perfect name, im sure tons of people can relate to. i know hydrangeas were one of the first plants i came to know and i still remember the huge blue and pink blooms when i was still shorter that the bushes themselves haha.
i would have many pictures up if it weren't for losing my usb cable for my phone. but i will soon put some things up. i dislike not being able to share visually like other members. i am trying my very best to focus on perennials and shrubs - but we all know how irresistible the annuals can be lol.

Lucky Bamboo isn't a bamboo (and it's not even remotely related to bamboo). It's Dracaena sanderiana (which has apparently recently been renamed D. braunii) http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/38172/ It's listed as hardy to zone 10 so if you get any frost I don't think I would trust it outside.
