Weather In Your Garden # 108

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Pretty but... Yuk! It looks heavy and wet.
Hoping your power and sanity will soon be restored.

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

Wet it was... And we're warm and comfy in NYC. The answering machine at the house doesn't pick up, so there's still no power there.

Robindog hasn't posted since yesterday... I know she has a generator, but I don't think she can use the computer with it. I hope she's all right!

South Hamilton, MA

Under 2" here. Just enough to be annoying. Only one small branch off the tulip tree. However it was the wet type & still visable over much of the garden. will melt as going up to 50 tomorrow. Happy it wasn't next weekend when we have our iris meeting.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Lost power for about 8 hours, snow has stopped but the wind is still howling, it's 35 degree's.

Durhamville, NY(Zone 5b)

I'm not new to Dave's Garden but I don't think I've ever posted here. I experienced something similar when I lived in Troy, NY in the eighties. Ont Oct 4 Albany county airport had 7 1/2 inches and rural Rensselaer County had 19" of what was described as more like wet concrete than anything else. I lived in an all electric apartment at the time. We were without power for four days. It just devastated the power grid.

Good luck everyone and I hope you get your power back soon.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Got about 10-12 inches of snow. We're still without power and had lots of damage in the garden. Many of my shrubs (hydrangeas, roses, viburnums) were crushed to the ground. I have two hydrangea trees that sustained a lot of damage. I don't know if one will recover (already envisioning a new JM in its place :). Several large limbs fell - one literally shaved clean one whole side of a yew. Another branch fell on my 'Waterfall' JM. It will probably be okay, just missing some branches. Most of my other JMs are okay. I went out last night at least 5 times to shake off the snow off the trees that I care about the most and it seemed to have helped. Still, it's a little depressing.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Wow, was actually kind of nice here. Sorry to those of you in the storm.
Hi Doug, was thinking about you the other day, nice to see you post here.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

They are saying we will not have power till Thursday or friday.. Thank god for the portable generator and wood stove.. Going into the 20's tonight

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What a bummer. Luckily, no power loss here. Some of the schools, however, were affected so the kids are off tomorrow.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Looks like no one had property damage so that's a really good thing!!!
Sad though for any plant/tree/shrub damage....looks like it's going to be a rough winter.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Autumn leaves and snow, don't get to see this combo very often thank goodness!

32 this morning, high of 46 for today.

That is a neat picture Celeste, makes the colors stand out!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Just checking in.. No power .. Have hot coffee .. All good

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Glad to hear, hope you get your power back soon. :(

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Our power is back on! Off from Sat pm. Schools closed today and the high school is a comfort shelter since we had freezing temperatures. Radio said 3 million without power at one point. The downed branches haven't spared any homes as far as I can see. Several of the towns thorofares have been blocked from traffic. Now after a subzero night, we're looking at seasonal 50 F. weather today! Hope those who haven't posted yet are doing OK.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Just heard on radio that this was the worst storm ever for CT due to the combination of heavy, wet snow and trees laden with leaves. Worst in over 100 years in NYC.

Hope everyone is safe and sound.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Great photos, Celeste! I feel so bad for those of you who are without power and with plant & tree damage! Our farm had 23" of snow....no word yet about the trees.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

we got hammered - 12" of snow like soj - i also went out into the snow a few times to shake off snow - no power and have not seen a hint of a untility truck - lost a lot in the garden - one dogwood i wrapped in wire just broke about 2" above the ground, it was 5-6" around and just snapped clean - many branches off jm's where broken - although i do not think i lost any just a few with serious injuries - did a lot of trimming some chain saw work yesterday - have a few large hickory tops hanging over yard that i need to some how cut off - might need a bucket truck.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Geez! Sorry to hear that Bill. We only got about 6 ", my DD in the southern part of the state got 12".

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yeah, bad combo with snow and leaves still on the trees
Frost everywhere this morning.

Amherst, NY(Zone 6a)

Good morning, all.

Continuing to pray for those hit by this freak storm. Glad power is being restored and some have coffee. Two essential things in life.

Clear and mostly sunny in WNY with a temp of 36 degrees. Going up to the low-mid 50's.

Have a blessed and marvelous Monday, friends. ☺

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Alison, if you can't have power, coffee is the next best thing. Hoping power is restored sooner rather than later for everyone.

South Hamilton, MA

around 2" here & we are not that far east of Bill. Sorry about all the tree damage. Small branch off our tulip tree. I don't know what came down in our woods.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

47 and trying to rain. leaves and snow are not a good combination. hope power gets restored to those who lost it soon.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Now that the snow is melting, the damage looks even worse than I feared. I'm so discouraged; just when my garden was starting to look more mature, one freak snowstorm crushes it to the ground. Almost every large tree in the yard is damaged - so many branches came down. It looks like one branch punctured the pond liner. The jury is still out on a few of my ornamental trees. They look so pitiful still, all bowed over from the weight of the snow (which is now gone but they haven't rebounded to upright position). Still no power. I doubt we will get it back before the weekend. Two large trees came down on the wires on our street. I am thankful we had no damage to the house, but I still hate to see the yard in such disarray. Hopefully everything will come back in spring.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I feel terrible for you and for wha with the destruction the storm caused. Losing critical limbs and entire trees is heart wrenching. You both have such gorgeous gardens.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Pirl. I know you had a lot of damage earlier this year with the hurricane. Crazy weather we've been having this year! I'm sure it will all be okay. I just hate seeing it this way.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Every time I set foot on the terrace my mind goes back to hurricane Irene.

So sorry Songs

(Pam) Warren, CT(Zone 5b)

So sorry for all of you who have had damage. We heard today that Warren, CT got 24." The roads were a mess with trees and branches down, especially the main road near us, and the whole area is still without power. We left just in time, a little later and we would't have made it. Someone has promised to go by tomorrow and let us know how the garden fared. J is worried about a few large trees that could do damage to buildings. Still no word from Robindog. I hope she checks in soon...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I still have not walked the property. Lost some crape limbs. Afraid to look at all the JM's. But I am blessed compared to many around here. Fourth night without power for many. No school tomorrow again.

Sorry to hear about all your damage. Just be thankful no one was hurt.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Both the NYBG and Central Park had enormous damage. Thousands of trees affected.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I'm sorry so many have had so much tree and garden damage. Our weekend will be spent dragging and chopping treetops and branches, but we were pretty lucky in what ornametals were spared, sometimes by an inch or less.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Still no power.. But doing ok.. The neighbors were all thrilled with turkey dinner last night .. We called it meals without wheels

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

What a wonderful treat for your neighbors!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

still no power - on a bright note my FIL uses the same shampoo i do so i don't have to use mine when stop by to shower:)

soj i went out and staked some on my trees that got a bet bent - i also carefully lifted the snow from the end of the branches and worked my way up to the trees to release them from the snow. i have to say it is a bit depressing looking out there and with all the leaves on the melting snow it makes it look even worse.

trying to decide if i replace the dogwood with either celestial shadow var. dogwood or with a stewarthia - leaning towards the celestial shadow since it will have some shade there - then realised i have a bunch of var. hosta on the ground there - stewathia with it green leaves and colored bark may be the better choice. a least both trees are here in containers and just need to be planted. any thoughts?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, my thoughts are that im sorry you even have to think about this! :(

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

awwww, so true Celeste!
I love stewartia

Amherst, NY(Zone 6a)

Good morning, everyone.

Continuing to pray for those affected by the storm.

Sunny and currently 38 degrees in WNY heading up to the mid 50's.

Have a blessed and terrific Tuesday, friends. ☺
