Tropical Garden #111
Time to make a PIE!
Gosh, you guys make me drool, your gardens are so pretty.
I lived in Miami twice in my life for about a year and a half both times. Ten years in Oceanside California, and a Year in Pheonix. I used to go where I wanted to go a lot back then. Just get a job and camp out. Sure loved those three places. I remember orange trees and grapes, loquats and passion vines and fig trees and palm trees, but it gets a little hazy as to what was where LOL..probably the passion vines were the most memorable for me.
Rita yours look wonderful in the post with what looks like roses. Is that a solanum or however it is spelled you posted from RJ?
Since the trees were cut down outside on the southeast side, the sun comes in much more strongly down there in the basement, and I even washed the windows and Joe put a new clear window well cover on, so now I have good natural light streaming in for a change. YAY
Still getting things in, will arrange and clean when I see what I need to do for what ever. LOL No One Goes Down here except Joe, to iron his Blue Jeans and Tshirts.. there is a hibiscus back there with a bud about to open on every branch, and the nite blooming cestrum smells the whole place up at night.
Drew , your plants look showcased, and very nice where they are at. Mine just look "stored"
I miss Rachel, too, she would be proud of me and my Philos and EEs..
This is a new area, Joe is going to hang me another "shop light" and I am looking at LED's.. I have all my adults kids looking for those metal shop shelves, since they all go garage sailing and I don't. Son bought those plastic shelf things for me, I really don't like them, but would never tell him that. This area is where the metal shelves would go.
No windows on this end of the basement.
Deb, that is my favorite color on that mg. When you and Joe finally move to Florida, don't forget to look for a house in this area. There are bargoons galore on houses here - everywhere in Florida for that matter.
Drew, your indoor garden is looking fabulous. McDowell in #3 is still my fave and what a lovely spot you found for him. Thanks for the wisdom on the Philos, between you and Dale, I might actually get my baby Philo through winter, and out to the shady border where it can grow like a weed - that's my kinda plant!
Rita, so glad you are having a second spring, too, and that you got some more rain! We are lucky to see all your lovely pictures - that Super Nova brug is just gorgeous.
Candela, what's your secret to getting Key Limes to give fruit? I have a 9ft. tree, and it gave me fruit when it was small and in a pot, but since I put it into the ground it has grown and bloomed but . . no fruit! My little Meiwa Kumquat gives me two generous crops a year, and it's on the same care regime as the Key Lime.
Mj, hope you've been able to put away your snorkel and flippers by now? Boy! did you ever get the rain. We got barely an inch +-(
I've got lots of cuttings of my red hibiscus acetocella rooted - just cut them last week! The leaves look like dark red maple leaves, and are edible. Poor lighting in the picture, my flash wouldn't work so used the kitchen lights to show the roots in the jug. The leaves are a much prettier color than that.
That is so cool you got those rooted!
Drew, your Philodendron giganteum does look a little varigated. Mine is still all green, but putting out new leaves.
Rita, I am still here but I've not had much time to play on a computer. For me, it's been like you stated where life is concerned. I like the last Anthurium you showed and your Brugmansia is so full of blooms that I'd say it smells heavenly. I have an offset coming on from one of my newest Anthuriums in which I will baby a while longer before I send it to you due to it still needs to grow a while longer before I seperate it. It's a hybrid from a cross I think you will like.
Drew, I am still admiring your house and your set up for growing plants inside is beautiful. I want the plant stand you chose for P. mcdowell. Do I have anything to trade for it...just kidding.
Dyzzy, I agree with DaleTheGardner. Philodendron gloriosum is a bit picky when it comes to temperatures, light and humidity. This Philodendron is mostly grown from tissue culture now, so do not be surprised if your plant does not achieve large leaves any time soon, or ever. Wishing you the best with your ventures in growing Aroids.
Debra, you still amaze me when it comes to growing tropicals in your area, especially when it is time to bring them indoors. Since I've been a member here on D.G., you've always done well with growing them year around and I've admired you for all that you do and take care of. Cute looking morning glory you showed.
Paula, great photos from your families gathering place. I've started a couple of plants for you and hopefully they will be ready before long.
Mjs, it sounds like you are as busy as ever and I am hoping all stays well with you and your equine business.
Sorry, folks - Deb will move to MY AREA when she moves to Florida!
Great looking plants, everyone!!!
Rita
What is this plant/vine?
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=8846694
That's beautiful!
It's common name is potato vine - I have one, but don't remember the botanical name right off the top of my head.
Take a look at this Passiflora fruit, if you DARE - risque!!!!!

OMG, that is hysterical. Talk about a passion(ate) fruit.
Paul, it's Solanum seaforthianum aka 'Blue Potato Vine'
Hoo, boy! That's hilarious.
I've gotta think there was some Photoshop-ing done there. Just too darn 'anatomically correct'.
Otherwise, may I say . . . only in Brazil.
Elaine, I wondered the same thing - that's just too 'spot-on'!
Deb,
A. Triangularis?
"LOCO" is the name of this one.
and also in yellow, that seems to be more of a vertical plant. The white is sort of sprawling in style.
I only ever plant the white ones, so the yellow must be what it reverts to if it cross-pollenates. Not complaining, just saying.
I've been trying to catch some seeds, with no luck so far . . . will keep after it!

Hello Everyone!!! The weather is perfect, one might work themself to death trying to accomplish everything that was postponed because of the bad summer we had.
candela, thanks, your yard never ceases to inspire me. The Brug Nova is the little broken stem from when you bought yours. I also have the shredded white Brug. you included in the box of goodies. You are correct, that is also the Sanchesia from your plant.
New Orange marmalade Musseanda
Dale-the-Gardener, I hope that you are in good health. I like your Clerodendron picture!
dyzzy, those are nice looking roots on your hibiscus. I do favor the dark foliage, and am looking forward to growing a few . They will add color to my hoop house.
I have always admired your porterweed in the background of your pictures. I have a big clump from phughes, and love it. My red porterweed died last winter, please keep a eye out for a red one. They are just as nice as the blue.
I have several of these Philo Imbes that survived the summer, and are going to look even better if we do not have another bad winter. No two leaves are alike, lovely marbled variegation.
RachelLF, it is good to know that you are doing well! I thought about you while posting that Anthurium. I was so excited to have it and share it with you'all.
I can't wait to have you back and see how much your Aroids has grown.
This is another New Philo. Maximum. I have lost most of my older Philos, and am trying to replace them.
Rita, which plant did Paul i.d. correctly?
Where do you get all your unique and beautiful plants, Rita?!
Rita, I have had the red porterweed a couple of times, and lost it. I'm a nut for red flowers, but it definitely is not as vigorous as the blue - but then not much IS.
My raging pink flowers on the variegated brom keep opening and changing, so please excuse the repeat photos of it. I thought I'd remembered it having pink and black flowers, but they seem to have pink bracts with purple flowers.
My brugs are all starting to bloom again, and I'm going to miss them, leaving Monday morning. Oh well, you will all be spared more repeat pictures of them.
Well Dyzzy, I can't wait for the divisions you sent to bloom now !!
That cuts it, Martha - I'm coming for a visit! What is the 'red dragon'?
