Planted pumpkin vines 1 month ago in an 8' x 8' box garden that I made with a single spray irrigation system spraying over the tops of the vines. The vines grew up to about 8' length each. I manually moved the vines around to keep them growing in the box. Just 2 weeks ago I noticed that the vines began to split and began to oose something about the consistency of millett (bird food) or grits if you are familiar with the southern food. It has affected all the vines and now they are pretty much dead. Any idea? I sometimes see a few small black ant running on the vines but it looks more like a disease. Picture is attached...help????
Pumpkin Vine Rot
I've never planted pumpkins, but have had similar damage on my squash and cucumber vines. It is a vine borer. There are many varieties. Not that this helps 4 mos later but for the future. I have never been very successful treating them. You can cut the affected vine off the plant unless it is the main stem.Google squash vine borer
I agree that it is an insect causing the "ooze".
