Milkweed seeds of various types question

East Alton, IL

We had lousy spring wet weather smack into scorcher. None of my milkweed plants grew to adult. I want to know if I can prepare soil in fall and plant seeds and cover and perhaps get a early start next year? Are there any photos of milkweed seedlings? I think I have been watering some, but only can find photos of grown plants online. I live in Illinois and am wanting to make a milkweed garden with flowers for butterflys and hummingbirds.

Thanks for anyone who took the time to read this.

Milkweed grows by very hardy underground runners...if you have them this year they will def come back next year
Do you know which variety you have>

Here's the link the plant files for all types of milkweed, many with pics of seedlings

Not all produce underground runners. Nor are all drought resistant. One cultivar that doesn't fit that is Asclepias incarnata. I have it and it produces fiberious (sp?) roots. It is one plant that does well around a pond, etc. because it likes it moist. Regular watering if grown in a border. Mine suffered from the extreme heat we had this year.

I also have Milkweed Asclepias incarnata swamp milkweed and had it in a pot for a couple of years sitting with some other plants over wintering in pots waiting to be put in the ground (I tend to procrastinate) not knowing where I wanted to plant them surprisingly they overwintered well in our Michigan winters. Well finally I did plant it this spring thinking I better do it before it dies on me thinking if it isn't the place I want it I can always dig it up.
Well to get to my point it didn't flower for me this summer it got very tall in a very sunny spot in my flower bed but no blooms. But the big thing is this fall I got a good look at it wanting to see if I missed the bloom and if it may have pods on it (no) but I got a good look at it and the whole stalk was covered with very yellowish looking bugs resembling aphids.
Now they may be aphids but they weren't green like the kind I've seen on rose bushes and such so I wasn't sure that they were aphids.
But my question is is there anything I can do to keep it free of aphids anything I can add to the soil or anything? I did have to finally spray the plant today actually with some plant spray that I use for my houseplants called Ibomb which works real well for my houseplants so I figured I would just use it because I had it. I hope it isn't going to be harmful to that plant.
Anyway is it normal that it didn't bloom for me this first year that I got it into the ground or do you think it was the aphids or whatever they are that kept it from blooming.
Sure hope I saved it in time I don't want to lose this one plant that I have and was surely hoping for a bloom and some seed pods to be able to share this year to no avail.
Any suggestions for the bug problem to prevent.
Thanks
Jan
