Bummer Robindog, at least the desserts were good...

Happy Birthday to Jan's grandson!

We have been invited to take an hour drive north and have supper with dear friends at their camp site on Lake Ontario. My wife works until 3:30 today so we will probably leave shortly after she gets home. We'll take both dogs and eldest son but younger son has to work 6 - 11 pm tonight.

Thomaston, CT

Hope everyone has a fun time at the pizza supper & at the lake camp....no rain for either!

That sounds yummy, Jen.

Not raining now, but we've had almost 4" since Friday.

I'd love to be at a lake camp.

Hope Madison's birthday was wonderful Jen! Sounds like the food was!
I was hoping to get some opinions on cheaper cuts of steaks.. Why do the food markets make them so confusing? If I search the name they have the steak labeled online I still can't figure out what part it is and if it is ok to grill! I mostly shop at Hannaford because it's right down the road and the meat is usually good quality. My husband would prefer to eat steak every night if he could, but we usually get Rib Eyes and those are way too expensive to get all the time for a family of 5! Trying to find something decent, I've taken a gamble in the past and have been very disapointed by the toughness.. Any one know which cheaper cuts do ok with grilling or broiling?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

shell / strip steaks are not bad to grill with

sirloin steaks are what I usually get

pork chops on the grill tonight with COC and sweet potatoes

Thomaston, CT

I do get London Broil, but I marinate it for several hours first, then cut it thinly across the grain....I like my meat well done, but if it's sliced thinly, it's tender....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I agree with marinating london broil .. but can't take it further than medium.. usually med rare.. trying to get Randy away from eating well done steak... and he can not eat a piece that touches fat.. he wastes more steak if it's something fatty and good.. sometimes I wonder why I bother

:)

Thanks I searched for the shell steak and found no results but they have steaks called boneless strip steak @ $9.49 per lb. and that's more than a rib eye so I would probably just get a rib eye instead. The only other thing I found when I searched strip loin says whole extra trim boneless strip loin. That one is 5.79 per lb. but it says they average 13 lbs! I was looking at that same page you gave me a link to earlier and I just can't figure out what Hannaford calls their shell steak.. I wish they made it easier. Searching just Sirloin steaks gets me a few different ones and some steaks called Sirloin aren't really from the Sirloin go figure! I found that here http://www.cooksillustrated.com/images/document/howto/MJ00_IStendersteaks.pdf It says that the Top Loin Steak is sometimes called various things one of them being Sirloin Strip Steak so I think that is the one that is $9.49 lb They have tri tip sirloin, boneless new york sirloin, & sirloin strip steak. Then I also get confused by the Tips they have sirloin tips, chuck sirloin tips, and beef loin sirloin tips. How can they have tips that are sirloin and chuck or loin and sirloin when sirloin, chuck and loin are all different parts of the animal? Sorry for the long explanation but I don't know how else to explain my confusion... Which one should I choose!? Help! lol

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Alton Brown has an explanation somewhere.. I will see if I can find it

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

hopefully this will help

Thanks! I am having a frozen dinner tonight... I was actually looking forward to it because I remember always loving this particular one and they don't carry it at the store I usually go to but I tried one a little further away today. So I didn't even notice until I started eating it that they totally changed it! It is not any where near as good as it used to be and noticed the box says new recipe right on it. I tried going on their website to send an opinion on it and their darn e-mail form isn't working.. Very disapointing! Kids had their fave Kids cuisine. DH classic fried chicken hungry man. :) We very rarely have frozen food, usually only when I'm running around all day and have to stop at the food store for something quick!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

Wow, I get sirloin steaks from Wegmans, didn't know there were so many different steaks!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I watched both part1 and part2, part 2 had a whole thing about sirloin and how to broil it.. That was awesome, I will definitely use his tips. :) I used to love watching his show, I don't have food network now because I switched to an economy cable package, and of course they took one of my fave channels. They do it on purpose so you have to pay double the money to get one channel you like! I didn't realize you could watch Alton on utube very cool, Thanks!

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

chicken, corn and baked potatos

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Ya, if you get a cheaper piece of meat, so much more important to marinate it.
We save some money by getting an entire tenderloin and then trim ourselves to create filet mignons

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Alton Brown had a clip how to butcher a whole loin as well.. go buy one at costco and make your own fillets .. not sure I could pull it off

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

It's pretty easy, knife has to be real sharp though ☺

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I need a knife sharpener then! I've been wanting to get an electric one for years and it keeps getting put off. If I stop spending all my money on my garden I could afford it! lol

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Now I'm hooked watching Utube lol First I watched Alton use a cast iron skillet to pan sear steak which I am so excited to find because I remembered seeing that one but couldn't remember all the details, now I need a cast iron pan and I'm good to go. :) Then I watched another episode about smoking pork to make pulled pork.. He made a smoker out of Terra cotta pots it was very cool..
