Pugh Bear's Propagation Thread

Pawleys Island, SC

Hey JB, are you still with us? I saw that parts of NJ got almost 10 inches of rain out of this storm. I am getting some rain and thunder, but it isn't a real hard rain.

Sharon, I am so happy you got to your little dog in time. I can't imagine having one to keep out of the pool.

Hope everyone is having a good Sunday!

Evening all,

Evelyn, I was given a gift certificate for 'Annie's Annuals' for Christmas this year and was just at the website looking at some plants and got a chuckle out of this book after joshing about the 'evil' plants... thought I'd share... it sounds like it's informative and has some interesting historical tidbits.... http://www.anniesannuals.com/plt_lst/lists/general/lst.gen.a... (not suggesting you buy it... just thought it was funny in retrospect). I'm seriously considering another 'Double Azalea Apricot' snapdragon... I had one last year and it was so pretty.... fantastic color. It got 'woody' eventually.. I tried rooting another plant but didn't have much luck with it. I love the tall snapdragons... they have that great 'cottage garden' look. Has anyone ever grown 'meadowrue'? I believe the plant get's rather tall and I wondered how invasive it might be...any thoughts?

Isn't this columbine pretty? Nancy

clyoung1 thanks for the info I will copy and paste it for later. Is a node a bump where a stem or leaf is going to grow out of? Do you see roots or leaves growing when you remove the bag?

Was humid yesterday but today not much so I guess they were wrong. Can't believe that summer is already almost gone. I see two signs of early Fall (which I will gladly take an Autumn period because often we don't get spring or fall) 1st is my virginia creeper has some red leaves during this heat, 2nd my Fruitless Mulb trees are getting yellow leaves which are falling already to some degree.

Nancy - I love the skyrocket snapdragons I planted last fall - they are still blooming!!!

I had hoped to collect seed from the 3' - 4' tall stalks, but before I could do it someone came in the night and stole my seeds!!! Seriously. Came out one morning and the plants had all been stripped of the seed stalks.

They are reblooming now. I hadn't thought about trying to take cuttings. Are the stems hollow?

Will have to think about this some more since I don't have any SEED to sow.

Amanda... the stem was hollow... but I tried rooting it anyway... with my fingers crossed and my hopes high... the gardeners eternal optimism... LOL! But I knew it wasn't going to happen. I cannot even imagine someone stealing all your seedheads...what a rotten thing to do.... I am sorry to hear that. Hopefully you will get a new crop of blossoms with future seedheads. I was up again last night chasing a mouse out of the garden....I get up at 4:30am for work... and the rascals come at about 3:45am.... I only know because my little dog goes nuts.... and up and out I go to chase whomever away... it's usually that time of the morning that I am sleeping the deepest... naturally. But my garden protection instincts kick in and I'm up like a shot... I think the little dog feels even more empowered when I show up because he really gets excited! Tonight I will pick more green tomatoes and bring them inside to ripen. Next year I think I will plant some marigolds for the scent. I understand it's the delicious smell of the tomatoes that draws all the critters in... can't blame them... but I refuse to share... here in Southern California there is so much food for them all...they can survive quite nicely without my tomatoes. :) Does anyone know how to save helitrope seeds? I haven't had a chance to google it yet... thought I'd ask. Nancy

Yes the node is where a stem or leaf comes out at. I usually remove the bags after a few of the leaves are about the size of my thumbnail, it didn't take very long once they got started.

Thanks for the info CL.

I was playing in my holding garden today and moving stuff that needs more sunlight into another place and I apparently got eaten by these small fire ants. I am itching to death. I could go mad and nothing is helping. We are out of benydryl too. OmG!

Hopefully you are resting now, don't you love those ants. Here it is biting gnats in the morning, fire ants during the day and mosquitos in the evenings. Gosh I love nature! I read that you can dab the bites with white vinegar and that will relieve some of the itching and pain.
