lettuce seedlings, how much water do they need?

Durham, NC(Zone 7b)

I planted some red leaf lettuce Saturday morning and it has germinated already in just two days! I put it 6 inches under the lights and checked it with a thermometer, wow almost 90 degrees under there. I have it in a 6 inch pot with maybe 20 seeds altogether (5 have come up so far). Do I just keep the surface moist or do I need to do a deep watering? My last set of seedlings baked at an inch under the lights so we are trying a little farther away this time. BTW this is my first time planting seeds and also using a grow light.

If you intend to plant them outside you can plant the germinated ones as they get to an inch or two tall. Planting them late in the day is best and the day before a good rain is even better. They may need some shade cloth or some protection until they get used to the sun.

When grown to full size, indoors and under lights, the lettuce will not have the flavor it would if grown outdoors.

Indoors they only want moderate watering, not drenching soil.

thanks! My plan (If I don't manage to kill it somehow) is to keep it indoors and use it while it is still young on salads, etc. I hope to start my spring garden indoors (peppers, tomatoes) so I figured I would start with lettuces and green onions to get some practice in before that! The other pot has green leaf lettuce seeds but they haven't germinated yet.

Good luck. I hope it works for you.
