Weather in your garden # 103
Just went through another torrent. Over three inches for the day. Enough!!
Rain predicted for the next two days. Had our 3" last week & I would rather be able to do garden work. I have dwarf irises to plant, but have to work the ground first.
looks like our power went out around 3 AM.. service truck woke me up around 5:30.. back up and running now and happy to have coffee!!.. 69 now going to 79.. might get more storms on our already flooded roads
69 degrees. Not hot, but muggy and buggy. Grey skys. Guess we're not having sun today. Too bad, I could be outside today.
Good morning.
Cloudy and 65 degrees in WNY with rain expected today.
Have a blessed and marvelous Monday, friends.
-Dave
Rain. More rain tonight. More rain tomorrow. Plants need little life jackets!
I rather have the rain than 105° with drought, at least it saves me $ watering and misery shriveling in the 'dessert' sun... (lol!)
- Cards are stacked against me this year when it comes to weather..
71°, wind 0.0, H 89%, heavy rain
On the way to 76° with more rain and T-storms yet to come.
By 6 am parts of LI already had 11" of rain, that was 3hrs and 4 inches ago...
I much prefer the rain to the heat we've had and certainly drought is not what anyone wants.
Yesterday, armed with an umbrella, I went out to check the name of a plant. Along the way I removed a clump of crabgrass and two tidy mounds of clover so I left them on the lawn. Then I got the name of the plant and was heading back when I saw another clump of crabgrass that came out so easy due to the rain. I took my handful of weeds and on my way to the driveway our neighbors were backing out of their driveway. I think they believed I was weeding in the rain. There goes the reputation!
70, 97% H, 2 MPH breeze. Still raining but not heavy.
Rain is better than snow too because you don't have to shovel it or get stuck in it. I hate snow. So why am I living in Western New York?? LOL
Because you love the area?
With all your new home improvements you'll love where you are even more.
It's not raining at the moment, but supposed to rain all day....showers tomorrow...the lawn has greened up again, the plants are smiling, my tomatoes are still green!
It would be hard to pull up 54.5 year old "roots". Maybe with all the improvements we can get a good price for this house and move south. But then there's those bugs. I think we'll stay and suffer through the winters. :)
No rain here yet either, but my bones and joints tell me it's coming.
The South... 1st step is the hardest, it's staying there that's the problem.
relentless/ scorching sun, oppressive heat and humidity, fire ants that gang up on you in less than 15 seconds, centipedes a foot long, spiders the size of softballs, killer bees, listening to people say Y'all all the time, bad pizza, elvis look a-likes, I can go on and on but you get the idea...
- no thanks, been there done that and thankfully was able to escape back up here. (lol!!)
71°, rain
My version of the South...scorching steering wheels, supermarkets so cold you need a jacket, clothes that appear they've been lying in a heap because they wrinkle instantly when you sit in a car for five minutes, humidity that drives you inside from the garden by 9 AM, roaches (aka "water bugs"), bad food, slowwwww service and the thrill of watching the left turning signal blink on the car in front of you until your hair turns gray or falls out.
I'll take Cape Cod and/or Maine anytime!
You have all DEFINITELY talked me out of a move to the South. The North-East sounds perfect now.
We got much less here than you guys to the south. Three inches. JFK got 7.7 - all-time record. More today and tomorrow!
71 and cloudy.
What happens to us if we garden in the rain? This is my vacation before still more travel, so I think I'm wearing slicker and rain pants for an hour or so anyway to plant and weed. Rain here is not torrential, just steady. Temperature is 67 degrees F, and since its been raining for days now , it is not steamy or excessively humid.
Rosemary - you asked, "What happens to us if we garden in the rain?". We get wet.
It's a good time to weed but not a good time to disturb the soil and plant anything. If you grab a handful of soil and throw it to the ground and it remains in a clump keep weeding and don't plant. Give the earth a chance to dry out more.
According to the paper we got 2.2" but the measurement in our garden says 4", Victor.
Yes, I would never plant now.
.3" of rain this morning. It is off & on. The power went out for a half hr. just before the noon news. 68°
Soaking rain....my gutters need to be cleaned even though they have "protectors" over them.....
Noticed a crack in the bathroom ceiling. Felt moist. Went up on the upper roof and it was the flashing around one of the plumbing vents. All the rubber was gone. Picked up a new one and replaced it. Hopefully all okay now. Was slippery up there!
Victor, I am impressed with your diy skills. Great job!
I'm impressed you didn't fall off the roof!
Don't be, Dave! I'm not that good of a DIY person.
I'm at 8.4 inches of rain for Aug and 51.4 for the year. Nuts!
Too much rain to go check the rain gauge. This is a repeat of yesterday. We have local area flood warnings. Official rain said .75 inch yesterday, but I know we had more.
I met those fire ants and roaches and hot steering wheels and I'm really glad to be back in the Hudson Valley. Home sweet home.
Had over 2.5" good thing a lot of people couldn't come to my daughter's party since we had to be inside.
Went out for a b-day brunch today and thought it was going to turn out to be a nice day, planning on going to Toys R Us to use her coupons, but thunderstorm is rolling thru only a few drips so far, but will wait till it goes by, people have no idea how to drive in the rain so I'll wait
About to pour again.
Rain all day, not sure how much as yet. Be careful of roofs, Victor. Your family needs you.
Had another good downpour. 0.57" for the day so far.
Thanks, Lucy.
It went around us
wow really Jen??.. been raining here all afternoon
Thanks, pirl and victor. In fact, I did manage to dig about a 3x7 feet L shaped bed and add some of the soil additions in 2 hours, but the soil WAS clumpy from the rain, so the plants are sitting nearby until it drys up. I must look pretty comical with the contrived rain get-up but I could work until it got hot, but not wet. Glad victor made it down from the roof OK to enjoy his handiwork.
had 1" of rain yesterday and overnight. Sunny today.
I was on the porch roof once....that's my lowest roof....never again! Met the dam ranger when I was walking the dogs today.....at 2:00, the dam's gauge had registered 4.66"....then we had more rain....I guess we hit the state's jackpot......
Dam ranger! ^_^
Rained all day & still raining at 10:50. Ground is going to be a mess to work in the garden.
