She's about to...62... Summer is here and it is HOT!!!!

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Yep, I have read they love to be root bound. They flourish in the ground too, but they do well in pots!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Tamie, I took notes, but please don't give me a pop quiz, I melt under pressure! Well I do have a beautiful loaded with green leaves boug, so thank goodness something else I don't have to water everyday. Plumerias are like that, they don't like alot of water and seem to love it. Thank you.

I went to hd and they had 6 pack 1/2 gallon plants that were a little dry, not bad tho. I got a beautiful white daylily had a strange name, 2 varigated tickseed tequila sunrise plants, joe pye weed, and 2 phlox for 3.48, not to shabby. Could of bought 50 stella d'oros 6 for 3.48 not one of my favorite plants tho. Oh and for 1.98 got a hardy hibiscus which was wilted but good size. I watered there and then checked on it in the car and it is already back to normal. Gonna have to keep on eye on hd the people they have in lawn and garden don't want to water, so there should be lots on sale.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Wow, you got a buy on the plants!

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the info on the Bougies. I too have been watering everyday because they are in a pot with other things. I will take it out and give it it's own pot. Thank you bunches!

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

What an excellent tutorial, Tammie. Thanks so much. Mine has variegated leaves, got it for a b-day present this year and planted in a 6" pot. It's branching gangbusters to the point I need to add a trellis, but it doesn't have a sign of a bloom. Sounds like I've been over loving it with too much water and will heed your advice.

Helloooooooooooo, did everyone leave? WELLLLL, come back! You are all needed here.

Oh Nita, you dear sweet lady. It came today and boy did I do a happy dance. You didn't just do good, you did exceptional. Never have I received cuttings still in the rooting cup. Every one was still crisp, not a flopped one in the box. Lady, you're good! Thank you so much.

Edited to add a great big thank you for the seeds too! Really never seen the colors of those.

Anyone have any water growing EE's? I think I could grow one of those again. I can't find one anywhere here and mine did not make the winter since my garage door did not close one night last winter. All I need is a tiny piece to start in my pond. I actually have some cannas that are growing!!! A bengal and its cousin.. can't remember its name but it looks similar but the bloom is yellow and the stripes on the leaves are thinner. I have two red stripes that are growing also in one corner and two more in the front that have never done well.... they are doing the best this year... actually TALL!! Can you believe that? I will take pics when I get home from Ruidoso.. getting ready to leave with my parents for the weekend.. looking forward to some cooler weather.

I forgot to mention, I found the bengal and bengal cousin hiding between some boxwoods in the flowerbeds. They were shaded from the worst of the heat and are getting water from the sprinklers. The bengal is about to bloom.. hope I don't miss it while I am gone.I cut the boxwood back on either side of it so I can see it better.

Hi Tammie, wish I could help you but EE's I don't have, oh, don't have a pond either. Someone here can probably help you. Great friends here.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I am here just popping in and out, work in the garden come look up something, sneak into DG and back again.

Wow those are in great shape! I am impressed to say the least. Looks just like the same coleus I have ...rofl. Great minds think alike? :) Those are just really great shape. Hope mine do half as good. Wow she really packed those perfectly.

Somewhere I talked to someone about rooting tropical hibiscus and I had done everything wrong to the hilt, but so far they are doing good and look like they might be putting on new growth.....fingers crossed. I took some cuttings of what I think is peperomia at least I think that is what it is. Seems like Debra or someone gave it to be and I decided I needed it to be thicker so I took some cuttings off the bottom. I have it in an upside planting jar.

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi happ. Good luck on your cuttings, lol no, double good luck on the tropical Hibiscus. Still LOL, hopping you will have so many you will ask me to take some of them off your hands. Anyway, I'll be here when you need me!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

That is a deal dahtzu. I probably have 6 cuttings of solid single bloom red. Later I will try a solid bright yellow when I get them out of the planters and will try doing them the correct way.

Tammie I have ee's but I don't know which ones work in the pond since I have never put them in my pond. Let me know and I will see if I have it or not.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I know the kind that grow in really damp or wet areas will grow in a pond. I don't know what I had before. Think it was called violet stem or something like that. There are several types. I can try anything. Just a small start will work. I put in a small pot just behind the siill from the watering can and it grows like a weed usually. I need to cut more cattails out again. They have been trying to take it over this year. Lots of roots!

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Oh Faye so glad they got there. I had this insulated box that I was going to use and DH took it for something else. Today he brings it back home and at least I have it now to mail something else in while it is hot. Took a bunch more cuttings and am trying a different approach. Most of the ones I sent you Faye had been rooted since back before my Dad died and I just couldn't get them out of here, so they needed to be topped out before I could even send them. I owe a bunch to Sooz and I am getting that together next. Have a load of mulch on my truck for tomorrow. Managed to get my Mom's driveway sealed yesterday and now I'm just catching up on things here. I was only gone for 24 hours and it is amazing what happens to a house and garden in that time when no one is paying attention. :))

Off to the races!

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Evening all just popping in to say I'm still around just busy on my new Garden House & In my flowerbeds :)
we got the front Started today my brother is Doing most the work for me so LABOR is cheap .

Nita, slow down a bit! It's way to hot to do anything with mulch. you would be a hard lady to keep up with, but sure wish I could spend a day with you even if I did have to tag behind. The plants are fresher than any I've ever seen after traveling in such heat. AND, gosh goodness gracious, even have them with permanent labels. Wow, another thank you. I will treasure them and of course each one will have "Nita" added to its name.
Susie, like your house and sure it will be a blessing when winter comes.
Hugs.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Susie you will live there this winter...rofl. I know I am in mine constantly, dh bought me a clock to put in there so I would know when it is time to come home and go to bed...rofl. I keep mine at about 55 or 60, at night, it usually warms up more during the day if the sun is shining. Almost all the plants love it, course I have a couple of tropicals where that isn't quite warm enough. Only problem I have is the concrete floor, tropicals and cold concrete do not get along. Congrats you will love your room.

We had amazing weather today and no humidity. I pushed mowed without sweating and got so much cleaned up. Got some weeds pulled amazing what a 20 degree temp drop will do for you.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Get some wooden pallets and put them on the floor for your plants.

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Looking good, Susie....you go girl!

Only thing I've done to the mulch so far this year is "fluff it up" and that's not doing the trick. Ya'll know how much I love to spead mulch. Are we looking forward to a major cool down this coming week of what, Faye & Neener? When I mentioned to hubby today I need to borrow his truck, of course he said OK, but I still saw the 'look' out of the corner of his eye and know he was probably thinking "what is she going to bring home". He knows I can't resist a yard sale and it's almost the week-end...lol.. but all I really want is a load of fresh mulch...or eight or ten.

Have any of you ever used aged horse manure as a soil amendment? Our neighbors raise Black Angus Cows and we can get all the free cow poop we want, but it's always full of weed seeds. Not sure if it's the same for "aged" horse doo, although the person who has it says it's like "black gold".

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

those cuttings look great! I have some going hope they take. Faye, I have three small hibs that actually took root from the winter cuttings, so hope they hang on till I can get them to you.. do you want a big hib bush> ? I found some for 3.00 marked down, if you want one holler now or they will be gone soon..I am sure they are red, pink and double peach..
I keep my hibs going all winter just like the coleus and brugs and stuff. Also, Tammie, I THINK I have the water EE, but will have to double check for you.. how about a water hiyacynth? those get humoungus..
anone know what the striped plant is? It sorta "Popped" up.. is it a banana?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Tammie, this is what I have: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/73419/
you can have it.. it is not in my pond and is constatnly loosing its leaves because of the dryness here..

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Oh that would work great in the end of my pond it is shaded most of the day just really hot.

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Well Faye I got that mulch and as soon as it gets daylight enough for me to see I'm going at it. It is 65 here right now and I figure I can do a couple of loads and get one for tomorrow before it gets too hot. Would love you come and follow me around. Have lots of places out there you can sit and watch. :0)

You go Sooz. Fill that truck up and run for more. Send him to me if he gets grumpy. I'll tell him how it is. :))

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

mornin all. gosh how were the races? I havn't been to any kind of race for a long time.

Maybe I should mulch, I don't do that very much.. is that what I should be doing now?

what do you use for mulch?
Neener, have fun outside.. off to work I go..oh! I use buffalopatties for the gardens, it does pretty good..
oh, and Tammie, could you save a small clump of cat tail roots for me?
When I get back from Arkansas ( taking care of sister) , I will be getting stuff ready to send out since it seems like evryone else is able to send stuff now..

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Debra that is a banana tree. Can't remember the name but I have a pretty big one.
Fruity I am like you I love to mulch everything looks so clean and neat. I agree fluffing this late doesnt work for me either.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Joyce, my sister wants a banana tree, so will save it for her, mine havn't done squat.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Mine are in pots and never go dormant. Course they take huge amounts of water.
Did you get rain, we did, yes, don't want any thing evening tho, meeting my sisters for a day of play, no DH's allowed he is staying home.... ;)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

no rain yesterdy or last night, big stuff supposed to come toaday, I have everything battened down for it. Have fun with the girls, today Joyce. Oh I heard from Bonnie, she had her birthday last weekend and I missed it. She seems to be doing okay, still job hunting and running her little plants shop from her home.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

LOOK At all the early birds :)))) guess a few worms better look out this morning :) I Just Have to have a couple cups of coffee & let it dry off out there for a bit . went through 2 pair of shoes yesterday from the garden. :)
so have my extra shoes in the dryer now :)))

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Morning everyone! we got 4 inches of rain last night! :)

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

OH LK I am thrilled for you. Truly thrilled! I know how terrible it is down there.

Got one truckload done and heading out for another. If this weather holds I should be able to get at least 3 done today.

Deb best wishes to your sister please from me. She will make it. She is young and strong and has a lot of life left to live. With you taking care of her she can't possibly lose.

OK off to the mulch yard.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

And this is what happens when 4 inches of rain accumulate on the old dry roof! I guess it pooled up, and it came through the kitchen ceiling, we had an inch of water all over the kitchen floor! Guess that was a hint to get out the mop??? LOL!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

I will figure out what parts of the root to save for shipping cattails! .I will have plenty. I filled my arms last time I cleaned it out to the dumpster. It killed me to throw out something living.

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

OOOPS LK.. Darn.

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

Hi all. Nita, you're something else....maybe like a real working machine, but you're not alone. did you hear Susan talking about all that fluffing of mulch and then on top of that, going to add to it. Whee doggie, you two just make me tired.
Debra, I would love the DBL Peach Hibiscus. It may be as interesting as this pictured one.

Look everyone! It really is a Red Hibiscus. Thank you Debra, she's a bute.

LK, Gosh I'm sorry. Hope you have good Home Owners Ins.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Yep, It is covered!

Love that red bloom! And here we thought you were growing... "weeds"!!! LOL!

Henderson, NC(Zone 7b)

LK, I think I have added all Hibiscus to my love list. Everyone I see is pretty to me. I have yellow , pink, and wine that come back each year and I would love any other color. I think the prettiest bloom I've ever had was on a tropical Hibiscus from Jax., and I managed to love it to death without even knowing how. Was going to send pic. but cannot find it.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

well gosh Linda, Congrats on the rain, even with collateral damage. YAY! LOL
I was praying to complain about getting water in the basement, cuz that would mean it had rained for three days or more. So.. Congrats on the roof damage, that means u got good rain! ( weird, I know(; )

that is a pretty hib shot, Faye, and I too have loved many cajuns to death.. found out if they are inside to let them get totally dry, then water thoroughly and then feed em like a brug. Mine bloom all winter inside. This is mango moon, still alive..
