Garden Photos #13

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oops! that pic was supposed to be vertical. Didn't turn it before posting. Sorry about that!

I read its possible to pinch Balloons to keep them bushy. Wish I had done it with the dwarfs as well as the regular ones.
I have had Sentimental Blue for 3 years.
My tall ones are pink, double white and pale blue. They will need props.
Too much sun for the pix, color is richer than that as all ballonflower lovers know.

i pinch mine - even pinch the dwarf as they flopped on me last year

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, thanks, I will follow your lead next year and pitch them all. They are so late appearing it never occurred to me to do that. Nice bunch of DL's being posted.

Went swimming and boating last 2 days, so no pictures. Plus during the time I was outside in the garden I conned my tall house guest into loping off a bunch of offending branches from acouple of trees along the front walk as it was getting too shady. I did do a bit of weeding, but not much. More guest arriving today, so not much time today either, but I will try to take some shots and post later. Patti

Thanks, Karen for the heads up on the Siloams....I've only ordered the small ones. Nantucket sounds like the place to be today, Patti!

Karen that's a beautiful cross! It was so hot today I couldn't stay out very long and I forgot to check out Elfin Envoy. I was making sure I had the soaker hoses going in my butterfly garden where the soil is already bone dry. Then I noticed a bunch of weeds and started yanking. Before I knew it I was sweating so bad. I decided not to go back out. I will make sure to check it tomorrow.
I think you guys with floppy Balloon Flowers have too nice a soil. My soil here (for lack of better words) sucks. lol I think they like that though. No floppin anyway and they aren't showing drought stress like lots of other plants here. I don't water them or fertilize them or anything. I was curious to see if my mums were going to bloom early again and wouldn't you know they are full of buds! Can I cut them off or will that make them not bloom at all?

Thomaston, CT

No, don't cut them! That's the only bloom you get....the rule is to stop pinching by July 4th...

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Darn, at least they are the pink Clara Curtis so they won't look too out of place. The reason I got them was for something with late bloom in that garden but I need ones that bloo late by themselves. I barely have time to keep up with all the other stuff to do out there I never get around to the little things. lol I like my Shefields better they wait to bloo late all by themselves, at least so far. :)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

sometimes if you dead head after the blooms fade.. they will bloom a bit longer.. but smaller flowers usually

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

It's only 8 days after the fourth, maybe I can get away with it lol! I'd much rather have them bloom in Oct. than now
:(

Little shop of horrors!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

wha thanks for the pinching tip.I will do next year. My dwarfs flopped this year. The hose dargging over the one on the corner didnt help much.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Wow! You do grow them big, Celeste!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

This ones description says:

"New
This massive flower is almost spidery in its effect with gently curled petals in pale pink and yellow with a green eye.

The sturdy stems on these lilies can reach a height of 3-4' with large, sweet smelling blooms 3-6" in size the first year alone! By the second year, they can shoot up to 5-6', and within three years they can reach as high as 6-8', with masses and masses of beautiful blooms to enjoy."

The first year it was over 6ft, this is the second year and it's 8 and a half.....can hardly wait for year 3!!
I may want to take IrisMA's advice. :)

I got 5/$9.75 from Van Engelen a couple years back, but noted that I didn't say in my journal where I planted them. I guess I should go out now and look for something very tall, but not that tall. They grow'em big at Pixie's, which is odd. Patti

Quoting:
Orienpet Lily Elusive New! Large, yet narrow, recurved flower petals of pale dusty-rose with bright yellow starbursts adorned with delicate dark rose speckles and elongated, narrow lime-green midveins. Orienpet Lilies combine the stature of the Chinese Trumpet Lily with the exotic beauty of the Oriental Hybrid Lily. Their huge, waxy flowers have slightly recurved petals and a subtle, fruity fragrance. Bulb size: 14/16 cm. July/August. 4 to 6 feet

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Wow that Lily is huge! The only thing I have that might be that tall is Joe Pye Weed. Everyone had me chuckling lol. Little shop of horrors :)
I checked Elfin Envoy and it is a pretty good size, so Jen I will send you a couple fans. I don't think I can fit bloom scapes in a box though. If you are going to NH for the RU you'd be able to bring some home with blooms on it. LMK
