How to add soil on incline "hill" to plant Lantana

Tucson, AZ

I have a "hill" problem that drops down from our patio pad. The incline is pretty short but is steep. Then, landscaping rock covers the whole yard, including the incline where it slides down frequently. There is also a horizontal electrical cord along the same spot. I would like to add a roll of black vinyl grass/landscaping edging below the top about 1 foot, remove the rock, fill it with good soil and plant trailing Lantana there. I can hook up the dripper system near each plant.

Black edging is generally only 4" deep or 5" of I could find it...I'd need to use stakes to hold the edging in place and also replace the landscaping rock on the outer side of it.

Is there another way or product I could use to hold enough soil on this incline which would be ok to grow the Lantana?

Picture attached.

Thanks, Thelma in Tucson

We had a thread about this awhile ago and for the life of me I can't find it....driving me nuts!
anyway, You can create "pockets" to plant by using stones you make different "levels" kind of like a retaining wall but less formal

You can see what I mean from this HGTV video, don't need to watch the entire thing if you don't want

I agree with with Flowajen...pocket planting works very well on inclines. Do you have landscape fabric covering the area under the rocks? If so, you can make pockets with it, especially with lantana which has a nice dense root ball. Just scoop back the rock, make a slit in the fabric large enough for the root ball, put the plant in place and smooth the fabric over the disturbed soil around the plant and return the rock to the area. The fabric and weight of the rock holds everything in place....the rock will also hide your irrigation lines.

Here's a good link to check out, and you will see in the last post a name of a user to check out that is in the upper midwest gardening forum-Huggergirl. Good luck, I'm dealing with the same issues myself along with clay soil.
