Spring 2011 - What's blooming in your garden? Part 3

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, You got a neat bloom looking more like my light colored bloom above which does'resemble Lilac Luster somewhat. Will be interesting to see what other
blooms you get from that one. I bet it changes for sure.

Becky, I hope my son will help me this next yr to plant veges. He was more interested
in growing them than any other member of my family. When they see it's work they
just do a disappearing act, lol

Debra - Glad you got an ID on yours. Do you have any idea of the name of mine? It's from your seeds from the seed swap...

Becky, that looks like Josephs unknown Blue.. and Jackie this am the next weird saz bloom had a blue block on it, no pics, sorry..

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Oh I bet that was pretty Debra. Maybe you can get a pic next time.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - Thanks for the possible ID. I thought it might be 'Hatsu Arashi'. Looks similar to the Plant Files photos. Very pretty blue blooms whatever it is! :-)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky your bloom does look like Hatsu Arashi which has the all green lvs.
Joseph was growing one that he wasn't sure of the id but it was a no Umi, it has variegated lvs.
Your picture is beautiful Becky,. Hatsu Arashi is perhaps the most photogenic M Glory of all.

Jackie - I believe what I have in my ponds are Mexicana water lilies. I never noticed that they were fragrant though. I'll have to find out! Beautiful photo of your bloom!

Linda - Lovely plants! I like your basil. I have sweet basil growing in a container and the hard rains we've been getting has knocked the down. I guess it's time to cut them back and hang upsidedown what I collect! Nothing like fresh Basil! I've never grown or even eaten Okra! Nice looking plant! Love your Black-eyed Susans and your Cosmos, too!

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

I just found and read this entire thread. Awesome flowers and VEGETABLES. I am most impressed that you got an iris to bloom, Becky. I had been told that I wouldn't be able to get them to bloom in Cocoa Beach. Now I've got to try. I had one little bitty one bloom this spring and it was so cute. I'm packing it up and bringing it down.

Early spring sightings were of three woodchucks. We are now down one, to two. They like to eat anything I plant. I don't like to share my food with them. Strange spring, MGs are just sitting not growing very quickly. My mailbox is naked. Ha ha. This year my sister Patty planted MGs on her mailbox trellis and it's halfway up the pole, no blooms yet. She says it's red. If it is , I'll save seeds. We've had a lot of rain and cooler than usual temps. Most of the time I have a sweater on, can't seem to get warm enough. I've also been battling bronchitis, can't seem to shake it. Pretty desperate, about to try the old two drops of oregano oil in a bowl of boiling water and a towel over your head. My sister Mari swears it will help.

Take care everyone, your gardens are lovely. Here's a few water lilies blooming in my pond.

Becky, my little Mexicana has a light somewhat sweet frangrance
Nice blooms Linda.
I miss my pond Mittsy, like your water lilies

Linda I should have grown Basil. Basil lvs, torn across the veins and soaked , covered, in water overnight is said to make an effective horse fly repellant.
We used generic listerine to spray them yesterday with good results. As effective as the poison spray, maybe better

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Mittsy - So sorry to hear that you've been sick. I hope you are on the mend and feeling so much better ASAP!

I was told that the bearded irises may not bloom here in my zone. Much to my delight ... they do! I am now hoping to get blooms from my Japanese Irises that were shared with me for an experiment. I didn't get blooms on them this year, but I did get lots of growth. I'll keep at it in hopes that they too surprise me one Spring/Summer! ;-) My bearded iris is growing in a container, so not sure if that might have something to do with it. It might.

Your cooler temps is what is making your MG growth slow. Once it warms up, the vines will take off.

Jackie - Interesting info about basil. I don't really have horseflies here, but tons of mosquitos. I need a recipe to keep them away! LOL! What did you use the generic listerine for? Horseflies?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, yes. because last yr we read that the generic listerine would take mosquitoes
down. Just don't let it get on any wooden part of your home. You can spray concrete porches, metals. kids swings; lawn chair areas etc. It works so DH and I said'then that we would try it for the horseflies. I couldn't believe it Becky, the horses just swatting every once in
a while. Before it was continuous swatting at the horse flies.I pd 3.00 for the large,
generic mouthwash. The poison would be 12.00 to 17.00 and the listerine has the
poison spray beat.DH just mxd in a small amt of water.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - So it might work on mosquitoes? Like spray it on your body and it keeps them away? That's neat that your poor horses are spared those nasty bites by the horseflies! That's awesome news! I'll have to tell my sister about that! Soooo much cheaper!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Becky, the email that circulated last yr re spraying the kids swings, lawn chairs, etc didn;'t state if you had to hit the mosquitoes with the Listerine spray directly. By spraying the lawn chairs, it almost sounds like it would zap the skeeters as soon as they landed on the listerine sprayed surface.
You would'nt like the listerine smell on your skin. To keep the mosquitoes from landing, just mix Skin so Soft with a little water and spray on. The skeeters wont land
and you will smell just great, lol
We need to try out the listerine spray on our lawn chairs and outdoor areas to see
the results firsthand.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I am going to have to try that recipe, Jackie

Thumbnail by joeswife
Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, still getting good results with the generic listerine spray on the horses.
Do try the skin so soft, it works.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Debra - Your bloom is awesome! Is it a volunteer, cross, or cultivar?

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Any remedies for horseflies that bite people? The skin so soft doesn't repel them. It's hot and I'm wearing shorts to garden in and I am being bitten up badly. Ouch, ouch, ouch!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Mittsy, I guess you could try the generic listerine, the original brown color and
great aroma, lol. Mix it in a spray bottle and apply, mix in a little water. Let us know if
you try it and if it works. Barring that, you might try applying apple cider vinegar to your skin.
A guy who owns a store at my local Farmers Mkt told me to try the apple cider vinegar but the horses wouldn't let us spray them. They really hated the smell, lol
We have to hold
them by the bridle to spray the listerine too. :-)

Mittsy, edited to add, we can always try the deep woods off, we use the cutter brand, its cheaper
I use the cutter for chiggers and to ward off the ticks. they're really bad here this yr.

i guess I'd prefer to smell like pickles rather than antiseptic listerine. Have vinegar so will give it a try. I am harvesting my garlic and I asked my niece if she would like some. Her answer was no, that smell oozes from your pores when you eat it. Silly girl! I notice when I send over my appetizer dips, (made with onions and garlic) they manage to scrape the dish clean.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Lol Mittsy re the garlic. Plus it's so good for you.

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Exactly!

Becky,
I am responding to your Post #8578571 above with the beautiful deep blue clematis. Are you able to grow these shrubs in Florida despite the nematodes in the soil? Where did you get the plant? I have been trying to establish some clematis in my lawn in Tennessee for two years now. Some have died and some have flourished. Here is a picture of a red one that had done well. It is Rouge Cardinal.

I am still challenged with clematis, I can't seem to get one going since the one vine I had was ripped out with the tree in the middle of our yard a few years ago..
that mg up there came from Darren, and I don't have a tag .. sorry..

Oh thats beautiful Debra, platensis?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Mittsy - Garlic may be a repellent ! I know it repels fleas. I wonder if it would repel horseflies and mosquitos! LOL! And garlic is good for you! ;-)

Doug - Beautiful clematis! I like the color. They seem to be pretty tough "vines" in my yard. (Not really shrubs.) They don't like wet feet though. That will weaken them and might eventually kill them. I had several of mine in the ground, but have since transplanted them into containers (buckets). They are doing much better in the containers. I got all of mine from several different co-ops. I got them cheap as very small starter plants. By the second year, they took off in growth and have done quite well. I do have to keep them is part sun (mornings) and part shade (afternoons) during the day here because of the heat. I've been delighted that they bloom off and on throughout much of the year. They die back in winter.

Lovely blooming vine, Debra. I've never grown platensis. Yours is really lovely!

I recently discovered that one of my the NOID brugs that I received from a kind person is a yellow bloomer! I'm rather excited about that! I was wanting a yellow brug, but most all of mine are pink until this one bloomed.

Nice yellow Brug Becky.

love the color! is it charles grimaldi?

Cocoa Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Mailbox is still pretty much uncovered and no blooms yet.

Beautiful blooms everyone! That brug is lovely Becky, i've never had good luck with them. :(
My 2nd set of blooms are 3 inches high. Out of 10 plants (20 if you count the 1st set I planted) I have 4 1/2 left.....something likes MG seedlings for breakfast!!! I doubt with my short growing season i'll get blooms this year so i'll have to live vicariously through everyone else's blooms. ^_^
I can share a siberian iris w/you. :)
