DAILY BIRD PICS VOL. 398
A Brown-headed Cowbird displaying his displeasure to another male. A female was in the tree above.
Great pics. everyone. Burn, this pix is begging for a caption. Looks to me as if 'Grandpa is teaching a youngster how to fend for himself'. lol I recently saw an Orchard Oriole for the first time. I can't believe my lucks. Now if I can only see a bunting.
Linth, what an awesome variety of bird photos you've got-thanks for the new start. Hope your wife's surgery is successful.
I've been missing so many wonderful photos. Can't seem to catch up.
I had a scary incident a couple days ago. My DH and I were walking our dogs one morning and we came upon a crow that had a piece of string tangled around his leg and attached to a power line.
We asked a homeowner if they'd call the power company to see if they had a bucket lift truck in the area and when we got home, I also called them. By the time I finished calling and drove back to where the bird was, there was a truck from the phone company there. The guy was hesitant about going up to save the bird, but I finally talked him into it.
I had brought my camera and was able to show him how the leg was tangled and where he could cut the string.
I can't believe I was able to hold the camera when I saw this shot, but as the crow struggled more, the string finally broke lose from the bird's leg and it was able to fly off on its own.
I ended up taking pictures of the guy in the bucket and sent all of them to the local newspaper and they'll be published this next week. It sure was nice to know that the big power companies still take time to help our local wildlife.
Yeah for the people that work for the big power companies. Those are the ones that make the difference!!! Thanks Duc for sharing the news with us.
Big thanks to the power company! Great shots duc! Be sure to post the link to the newspaper when the photos are posted.
Duc... that's a great story! If you hadn't gone the extra mile, the crow probably wouldn't have made it! Great ending!
Duc...your story brought tears to my eyes...how sweet that all involved took the time to save this bird. I am sure I would have dropped my camera...you did a fantastic job of getting some great shots and I would love to see a link to the story when it is published!! You get the Bird-Watcher of the Day Award!!
Thanks for the fabulous start on this thread Linth...your shots are always a pleasure to view.
Great shots everyone...nice to see the migrating birds and regulars too.
Wow duc, fabulous shots you captured. Thank goodness you spotted the crow in trouble and thank goodness also, for caring utility company workers.
What a great story duc...thanks for sharing it with us!
I echo what the others have said, duc. Well done to you, the homeowner and the power company.
We had a pair of blue birds trying to select one of our nest boxes for about a month but the HOSP won the battle and the pair have not been seen for a while. Then I started seeing blue birds when I would be working in the barnyard on our mulch bins. Several birds. This morning I decided to take a lawn chair and camera to the barnyard.
I'm not experienced with blue birds but I think these must be fledglings?? They are a very busy group collecting insects and hard to keep up with as they are moving about.
Wooohooo! Congrats Lew_Tex you've got BBs juveniles! They're adorable!
Happy Mother's Day!
Great pix everyone, and great drama, Duc!
It was a big day in the yard yesterday. At one point I had FOUR Baltimore Orioles and one Orchard Oriole. I was working on a garden project most of the day but found some time after to take pictures.
Baltimore Oriole enjoying some grape jelly.
And finally, the BIG event (for me) was this lifer Common Yellowthroat. I was lucky to get this picture because I had seen him earlier in the day while working (without camera) and just about had a heart attack! I had JUST written on here that I wanted to see one. Anyway, he came back. I was surprised at the size, didn't realize he was so small. And quite the ground forager.
Happy Mother's Day folks.
Wow, great pictures. Mrs. Ed, love the special coloring on that Grosbeak. Geez, a great collection of spring birds.
Your Warbler looks like a Nashville Warbler to me Mrs. Ed but I have been way off this spring on my ID's! lol
I go this shot the other afternoon. This is Pileated male #2 which we call "the little male'. He is noticeably smaller than the other male and just a bit larger than the small female we have. It is hard to tell in the photos but very easy when you are viewing the real birds. We have to check the markings to see if it is the male or female when they. come. This one does not come as often either so I assume he is crossing territory lines maybe.
Nanny... always love you Pileated! Could "Little Male" be a yearling from last year? Beautiful!
Mrs_Ed... I adore that Rose-breasted Grosbeak! Gorgeous!
Happy Mother Day to all the moms. I don't have a good photo that's best suited for the celebration. So I'm sending flowers. Mrs. Ed. You've got the birds of the day photos. All are very lovely, thank you. Wild Rose, yours (of the Mother Goose and baby) said it best. Thank you for that special greeting.
LEW, your bluebirds are adorable. I'm so happy they stayed in the area for you.
Adel, great shots of your grosbeak, siskin and swallow. That gourd looks perfect for a nesting family.
VA, cute shot of the goose.
Mrs Ed, I'm so jealous that your orioles love the jelly-mine continue to ignore it. Great shot of the grosbeak and that pretty mystery bird-love that eye. Congratulations on the new yellowthroat.
Nanny, love all your birds-wow, two pileated!!
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY EVERYONE!
Here's one of my Tree Swallows. I think it was trying to cool down from the hot sun.
