Clematis talk continues...

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

Angie, I believe the Epsom salts has worked magic on all of my plants this year. I sprinkle it around my plants, and I've seen a big difference in all of my plants including the clematis, daylilies, lilies, peonies, and roses. They're all much greener with more growth and bigger blooms. I just picked more up yesterday at our local grocery store. Here's my newly planted Pink Champagne, which has one bud. YEAH!!!!

Love your blue with purple, Annette! They're all wonderful. That spot of green isn't typical. I'm so glad the Epsom Salt worked so well for you. The clem's do seem to love it as do the roses. Just my guess...you will love Pink Champagne!

Booker - you and I have to be the patient ones and it's just not much fun.

Now I know I need to get more colors of clems. So far all mine are looking alike. The darker purples have not bloomed yet.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

What colors would you wish for, Marie?

I find those listed as "blue" are really more lavender and some reds are much more violet or purple.

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

Anything but pink,,,lo, that seems to be all my turned out to be, pink with white. I do have a Josephine that I await to bloom. I love the way she looks.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

See that! I have too many purple and violet. Last year I bought a yellow one, Tibetana, from Brushwood and it's doing better than I can believe. It has to be four to five feet already and I'm anxious to see blossoms.

I really like the white ones and never thought of white as being so appealing but they glow in shade.

Lovely clems.....it's hard waiting for them! Is there a ratio in the epsom salts watering?

(Debra) Garland, TX

marie, going with pirl. had my first white this year - Arctic Queen. The petals are soft white with pale lime green streak down the center. Warm and, I think, very pretty. just put in a couple of miss batemans, eager to see what they look like next season.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I do a tablespoon to a gallon of lukewarm water but others do less. Give a quart to each plant but if they're brand new to you then you might want to give them less than a quart.

Jeanne and I tend to toss a handful and water it in so you can take your choice. It's really easier to go around with the big container and toss, then turn on the watering system or hose or let it rain. The rain is the iffiest part - you'll never know if you got enough.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Miss Bateman is one gorgeous clematis!

Thomaston, CT

Thanks, Pirl...will give it a try. I saw Ms. Bateman for sale today at Walmart's.....think it was $13.00, large & healthy looking.....but I didn't get it, because isn't that the one that doesn't do well this far north?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It's Florida Sieboldii that prefers the south. Miss Bateman does fine with our cooler temperatures, Marilyn.

Thomaston, CT

Thanks, Pirl....guess I'll go back to Walmart's!

Dayton, NV(Zone 5b)

Hi all! May I say that all of your photos and ideas are wonderful. I just got 2 clematis from Joy Creek. They are hard pruned and just starting to show growth. Haven't planted them yet as we are going to have a cold snap tonight and into next week. Is it ok to give them some epsom salt prior to planting them out in the garden? The 2 clematis are Durandii, and Alionushka, if that make a difference.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Glad to have you with us! Yes, you can give them each a drink and they will thank you for it.

Jackmanii is at the top of the lantern!

K2 -

I have a couple of Durandiis. I love their color and they seem to bloom a long time.

Dayton, NV(Zone 5b)

Thanks Pirl. I will give them a drink and hope to get them in the ground when our storms blow over. It's supposed to snow here tomorrow. But who knows...this is NV and things change very quickly. I'll keep you posted.

Carolyn, I am starting again with some very dependable clematis, in the integrifolias. I love their colors also.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

The hard pruned one I have from my Joy Creek order isnt doing much. What was left is dying. I will leave it in the ground until next year. Hopefully it will show up in 2012.

JoAnn

is it clematis wilt? Have your stems gone blackish brown seemingly overnight? What pruning group is your clem? Type 2's seem to suffer more from clematis wilt.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Jan Lindemark.
It has looked like this since it came.
On the otherhand the clem that was soo awfully small and in a different pot,is comming along.
I was disapointed in it and called Joy Creek. They credited my card ,no arguments. I politly said I didnt think it looked like a fifteen dollar plant.

If you are maintaining the green leaves on Jan Lindmark, I think it is still getting established in her new home. It may take a while, but when you do finallly see new growth, you'll know that she has taken. I would baby her - are you supposed to get the rain all this week that we are getting? The clematis really seem to like this weather.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Yes to all questions. It has rained for 2 days.Yesterday all day accumulated 2 inches, flood warnings.
Its drizzling here today and wont lift until tomorrow.
One good thing about the cool spring is the tulips are blooming longer.

JoAnn

I am no expert, but I think Jan will be ok....keep us posted.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I believe it will show up next season, bigger and better.

Thomaston, CT

Good luck with it, Jo.....Pirl, jackmanii is going to put on a show soon!

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Just got back from Myrtle Beach to a yard full of flowers. Can't wait to post pics. As for the late comment regarding white clematis - I love them. They really make a show during hot summer days and evening - all the time really. I like them against evergreens too.

John Huxtable is a massive bloomer and fast grower for me. It hasn't bloomed yet but Miss Bateman, posted above is very stunning, Guernsey Cream (type 2) is an early bloomer and lovely this year as it's 2nd spring in the ground. Still need to get some height on GC to make a real show.

I ordered The Bride this spring and she's growing well, anxious to see blooms.

The purple clematis on my mailbox above was a seedling and we're not sure what to call it. It's blooming now with huge purple blooms but later will bloom simular color but smaller flowers. It was one of Debbie's seedlings from SSV. We're hoping it's one of a kind since we've watched it's habit for 2 summers and haven't fully decided what it is. When it blooms again I'll do a picture comparison so we can see what I have.

I'll send pictures later of my now blooming: Honora, Niobe, Westerplatte, Ivan Olsson, Hagley Hybrid and who knows what else. Can't wait to get the camera out there.

Jo Ann - I'd mix manure and compost along with bone meal and put that around your clem. I'll bet you won't have to wait until next year for a lot of new growth. Many clem's seem to be slow this spring so my guess is they are busy growing roots.

Kathy - we need your photos! If that purple appears to be like The President you could name it Quincy.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Pirl ,it was planted with compost and BM. I will spread a bit more.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

A thick layer on top always helps.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

OK

ge1836,

One of my Joy Creek clematis (Durandii) arrived here and looks similar to yours with a little growth on it. Healthy growth. My other one (Alionuschka) arrived here with just teeny 2 tiny leaves coming up from the base of it. They both got here last Wed. and I gave them some worm castings (that's a type of "manure", right?). I also gave them a drink of fish emulsion and Superthrive. I am going to give them (as suggested here) some bone meal today and a drink of Epsom salt. They are both Type 3 clematis. Sorry no photos. Still need help from DH on posting those. Now that I have my clematis here, I have something to take pics of. ;).

I have ordered six clematis from Dan at Brushwood. They ship on the 27th of this month. Can hardly wait. Here is what I ordered from Dan:
C. Inspiration
C. Huldine
C. Inspiration
C. Rihavarinne
C. Sunset
C. Rituaal The last 3 were on sale and Type 3 clems. I like Type 3 for now, as I am not real confident in my pruning skills in the early large flowering type 2's just yet. Photos to come. Not really much to see right now. Zone 5b and living in a valley of the Sierra's ya gotta love it! Got down to 28 degrees last night after being in the 70's last week. I protected my newbies and they did fine (some salvia, agastache, and viburnum). The cold zapped my established 4yr. helianthes (sp?) a little. Not worried about it tho' as it has been extremely hardy.

Pirl, wow, your jackmanii is going to be gorgeous when it starts blooming

k2, your going to have a beautiful garden when your plants mature.

Here's my NOID, this is it's second spring blooming.

Love the color of your NOID....

Beautiful color, Annette. I thought it was more like my Niobe.

Both would look lovely in a watercolor!

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

You all have been showing beautiful pictures of your clematis. I cannot seem to keep one alive. Do you have yours planted in full (south facing) sun or in partial shade? I have Dr. Ruppel. I think it require partial sun light. I have either an east or north location for this one. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I have some facing all possible directions and my Dr. Ruppel faces north but does get some sunlight from between the wooden fence slats.

Where are you buying your clematis and could you possibly be giving them too much or not enough water?
