Clematis talk continues...

(Debra) Garland, TX

Cem, like the two-tone colors.

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks lovemyhouse. I forgot to mention that I planted my last 2 clematis from Brushwoods, Miguel Viso and Pink Champagne today along my fence, which will grow behind the new peonies also planted today. They both had excellent roots, so hopefully they'll put on some good growth this year.

Hustisford, WI(Zone 5a)

This is REALLY bad, I think I found a location for some decorative fencing, that will also stop the dogs and their shortcut, that I can also plant some clems on.

Geez, you are all SUCH a bad influence on me.

And my little tiny clem is up to about 4 inches tall, and still growing. Not bad for a clem that I thought I killed last summer. I am holding out high hopes to see at least one bloom from it this year! ~j

Loving all the pics ladies. So beautiful. Wishing all you Mothers Happy Mother's Day. Maybe someone smart will give you a gift certificate to buy more clems or something to grow them on.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Love the inventive trellis ideas Kathy,. that red head board will sure to be a focal point. Pirl, that gate is so beautiful! Glad to hear clems are reemerging and growing

Williamstown, NJ(Zone 6b)

One of my first blooms. All 12 are so loaded with blooms. When they start to pop open I will be taking so many picture's since I don,t know the name of most of them.

Happy Mother's Day. As one friend says, "We're all mothers of something", and it's true.

Annette - I've lost many a tag and have many I bought without names. Now I'm more prone to taking a photo when I get the plant home so I have some record on it.

I haven't grown (or even known) Miguel Viso but I do love Pink Champagne.

J - good luck with the one you thought was a goner!

Many fence companies have extra sections of fencing that they'll sell at a reasonable price, especially if they've been discontinued. Doesn't hurt to look, right? That's what we all say about "just looking" at Brushwood or Klehm's or Joy Creek or Donahue's!

Riverland - great idea! Or we could buy one to honor or remember our own mother's or any special woman in our lives...or all of them!

Banana - my husband bought it for me. What a shock that he realized I adore old cast iron!

Very nice, Marie, and very different. We'll all be glad to help you identify any of your mysterious clematises.

Here's Anna Louise, last year. This year there isn't a hint of growth. Win some, lose some.

I have this section of wrought iron fence the previous owner left. Been saving it for years thinking I would do SOMETHING with it. Would be perfect for a vining plant if turned vertically. With all the Clematis purchases this year, I think it's time to find a spot. :-)

Oh, my....really love those clems, Cem, Maie, & Pirl! I noticed buds on what I think is Killian Donahue.....

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

lovemyhouse - that will be spectacular with clem's.

Marilyn - buds certainly do get us smiling!

I also use the flower 3-sided spray stands that florists use. If you have cemeteries in your area that do not have strict rules about keeping the grounds clear, you may find some of these thrown over in the woods or in the trash area. These type cemeteries may be more prevalent in rural areas than urban areas. I am going to check the cemetery closest to us tomorrow where I have found them before. Today I planted the 7 clematis that came from Brushwood Friday. This was my third order from Brushwood this spring. I also ordered 7 from Donahues which will be shipped tomorrow. I have three more that I want to add to that order, if I remember to call early in the morning. I can use some free clematis supports!

Hustisford, WI(Zone 5a)

Debra, great idea for reusing that piece of fencing. My oldest sister & brother-in-law love flea markets, so I told them to keep their eyes open for some decorative fencing. I can buy some, there is some decent stuff on sale at Menards (another big box store pretty much based in the Midwest) but it would be much better to reuse something.

I still have this 3 sided TV antenna stand, that my first clem is planted next to, but I want to give that one a fighting chance, and won't plant any more there until this one takes off some. My initial goal was to have red, white & blue clems intertwining on it. We'll see if I stick with that idea. ~j

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

lovemyhouse - that is a great trellis. I have wrought iron porch posts that I picked up at a thrift store and they are great for the clematis. The 2 sides make for a huge clematis or 2 to grow on. I'll post a picture of that one when they bloom.

I have two leftover from the old porch steps but just have to figure out where to put them since I'd only be able to use them for lower clem's and want them to be noticed.

I noticed buds on Henrii and Daniel deRonda. Good thing there are other distractions while I wait for open blooms.

Athens, PA

Arlene - that is beautiful. What is planted in the flower box?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

You bet, with those distractions, Jo Ann.

Carolyn, thanks. They're always Jack's choice and that sits fine with me. I know there is a perennial dianthus at the far end but it changes annually. Jack also made all of the windowboxes - four for the garage and two big ones for the porch.

they are just gorgeous. I love Jack's handiwork. My husband loves dianthus as well.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks. I told him and his chest puffed up a little!

This is one of two on the rear (northeast) side of the garage. He plants all the seeds for planting, too.

If it was my job I think I'd have artificial plants!

Here he is planting the window box shown and don't ask why he didn't move the umbrella! Men!

I love his color combos...

Men are a funny breed, aren't they?

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

gotta luv'em

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, in both cases.

Now he has six hoses down from the attic over the garage and can't remember which hose goes where. I will take photos of all when we're sure they're right and make a collage for him but we'll both probably forget where I filed it.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

pffffft

Thomaston, CT

I really love those window boxes, Pirl....when I was a child, we had them on the little Cape we lived in...the house was white, the boxes were dark green. One year it was my job to paint them....didn't like them so much after that! Buds on Silver Moon today.....

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I can imagine, Marilyn!

Hurray for Silver Moon!

Here is a beauty!!! I can't believe how this clematis popped open so quickly

Absolutely wonderful and so stunning with the color of your home and the white of the mailbox. Great job.

Nice Kathy! I love the way it drapes over the mailbox.

Thomaston, CT

Gorgeous, saturated color!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Love the rich color. Who is this fine specimen?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Is it 'The President'?

Athens, PA

Kathy

I really like the color of that clem with your house - who is it? Gorgeous color.

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

I finally have another clematis blooming. Here's one of my NOIDS that's made some good growth, and has 1 bloom. This picture actually shows the true color.

Cem, that is so lovely! Love the purple and blue. I think the blues are the hardest to capture in their true color.

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

My other NOID with more blooms open, and it thinks it's adorable, so it's made it's way onto the fence for me to take notice. LOL Some of the blooms have 4 petals, and some of them 5 petals, and one of the petals on each bloom has green streaks as part of the petal color.

Duluth, GA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Angie. Here's another up close of this clematis, the petal to the top right of the picture shows the green streak that I mentioned, and almost looks like a leaf as part of the petal formation. These blooms are also larger, and less bell shaped than they were last year. Annette

I have buds, at least. :) Looks like Proteus will be blooming before too long, and a couple of others are budding out, too. I think I need to try the epsom salts watering I read about here in the clem forum.
