Money Matters - Part 6

Good question, Jen.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

ls have a co-worker that lives in monson - the T missed him although he saw it over the ridge.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I must have answered every ss question except what she's asking!!! Every retiree gets everything he or she contributed in a matter of years, as I said earlier - unless they and their spouse die early.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Doesn't everyone get that ss statement that lists what you'll receive monthly?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, and I did mention that too.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

How much you will draw changed a few years ago. It used to be based on the 7 years' highest earnings, and before I could draw, it changed to the last 5 years... when I was only working part-time. Consequently, I started drawing 1/3 of what they had told me previously.

Monson, MA

Yes, I do get my statement from SS, the question is "how much is collected and in SS from 'all' workers?
Ex. Collected 100 million in 2010 from 'actual workers'.
Did the workers and retirees get 50%? 60% or ??
Are the retirees and those who actually paid into SS get their 'fair share'?.....
What percentage does the government take out $$$ for people or children or illegal immigrants and others who have NEVER paid a penny into SS or for other programs?
I know for a fact that children that are diagnosed for certain diseases are getting SS, and YES there are quite a few who have their Drs. diagnose their children so that they CAN collect!
I know that widows and others do get benefits from SS that never paid anything into it.
I do give to charity, however, workers age getting so little from SS at present that 'they' are on charity lists !!
Workers are the backbone of America and they sure are not getting a fair shake from the government.
OK, I live in MA. worked 2 jobs, one state job, one SS job. Went to get my SS retirement and was penalized because I have a state pension. So only can collect 25% of my SS. I know they use all kinds of legalize language to try to 'justify' this and I do not believe them on bit...so am still working and over 65 to pick the loses from SS for my retirement.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Don't expect to find that anywhere!

At 62 I get xyz a month. I live to be 120, what do I get?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Lots of wrinkles.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

lol!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Not sure if I am yawing or laughing

We to print out some more money to pay off some of those bills.

Quote from darius :
How much you will draw changed a few years ago. It used to be based on the 7 years' highest earnings, and before I could draw, it changed to the last 5 years... when I was only working part-time. Consequently, I started drawing 1/3 of what they had told me previously.

I'd like to respond to that, but can't figure out how to capture it without prohibited bad words. Why didn't it start out as an average of all your lifetime earnings and then just stay that way? Moot question- whatever the rules are, they are, its about getting more money out of people earning it and doing 'whatever' with it.

The Gov. Spends it, borrows it and take it as a salary.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Why do you think most younger people, myself included, would have LOVED the private account option?!!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

But then the younger people wouldn't have been in it to fund their parents and everyone elses parents.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No - it was for their own ss. However, the proposal called for only a percentage - less than half - to go to private accounts, it was for those under 50 or so (back then) and it was VOLUNTARY.

Monson, MA

Now, you are realizing the impact of 'not knowing' what the government is going with the SS taxes that workers pay.
I get a yearly itemization of my pension, the 'total' amt. in the pension, what it earned or lossed during the past year.
Also the amt. given to widows etc....
This is our money why do not have an accounting of the amt. in SS??
If workers united and demanded an accounting perhaps we can assure that our $ is being wisely spent.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

So that private account option was proposed but never went thru? Paul is 'reviving ' the idea . But someone would opt out of benefits, then have some 'circumstance' and plead back in, and the whole thing would become a mess..

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

This is more depressing than Victor's links!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

So who pleads when their 401k investments tank? You're responsible for your own choices. Those who are not capable could gave remained in the traditional money-losing ss.

Oil went up 1.69 to end up at 100.74 a barrel

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That was because of the OPEC meeting.

Yes the meeting, as they are not changing nothing.

What's up with ice cream?! Took the kids to Carvel yesterday. Three cones - one small, one medium and a waffle cone for me. $11.35!!! Are you kidding me?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

That's INSANE!!!!

There is a diner down next town over, very popular, HUGE place, they have added on over the years, was a fmaily run biz. The original owner died and the wife sold it, we went for dessert the kids had ice cream, I had pie and hubby had a piece of cake, we had coffee...with the tip $50!!!!!!!!!! are you kidding me??????? I almost puked it back up and told them to keep it!

I would not have paid it.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Didn't yo mama teach you to look at the prices before ordering?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

You can hardly sit down in a restaurant without shelling out ten bucks a head some way. Last time we went to Friendly's I realized that every single menu item was priced from 7.50 and up. Except a bowl of soup or a small salad. Clearly the price had little to do with the food cost and much more with just getting # $ for your use of the space and service.

3.55 today's best here

I am not a good tipper. What is the percentage? 15-20? If the tip was 500 bucks that Ice cream/pie or what ever was in the thousands !

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The total was $50, not just the tip!!
