just lovely!
She's about to...60... Spring is here!
I want those irises....!
Morning everyone! What are you all up to today? I went to the Dr. yesterday. Had the stitiches removed from my knee. I had a cyst removed last Monday, and that is doing good. I ask the Dr. about my fingers, as they are still swollen, and I can't move it very much. She looked at the X-rays and said they are healing very nice. Then ask if I would like to see the X-rays, and I said yes, so we walked to her office, I ask her what the white stuff was on the side of my fingers and in the joints? She made the picture larger, and said oh, looks like you still have small bone fragments in there from when you crushed them! DUH! Made me so mad, she did not see that. She told me it is something I will have to live with, cause if I have surgery, my fingers will not move at all from the scar tissue. So I am calling a hand specialst today in San Antonio, and see if I can get in...
Geez LK. That wouldn't make me happy either. I had a hand injury years ago in an auto accident and my left index finger has never been right since. The ER Dr. didn't have a clue and I should have followed up. As I get older that finger is twisting out of alignment a little more every year. Get another opinion.
Oh come on, you wouldn't of been happy if they made your left index finger a right. (pun intended)
ROFLMAO Crit. That was a good one kid!
So very pretty Deb I CAN HARDLY wait to see what my 1st bllom is going to be i don't find any buds at all right now & good thing for we got a heavy frost this morning good thing i covered many of my plants last night..
so guess i better go throw back the covers so the sun can warm them up :))) happy gardening
Morning everyone! Debra, that is so pretty! Love that color!
A neighbor up the road I don't know has a bunch of tall bearded Iris clumps that have dark Royal purple petals on the bottom and a rootbeer color on top. Really pretty and they've been there for years. One of these days I'm going to stop and ask if I can dig a clump or two. Sorry about my primitive description, but know you gals get my drift.
We're going to my MIL's tomorrow. She has a "honey do" list for hubby and while he's busy whittling it down, she and I will be running errands. Ovey! I have a big pot of Portulacas to give her (thank you, Neener) and picked up several red Geraniums this week for her that are now in a nice planter. I'm cutting some of the blooming Irises since they're her fav's and am going to put them in a glass vase tied with a ribbon for her Mother's Day present. She loves Tithonia (Mexican Sunflowers) and have a fresh pack of seeds I'll plant for her.
One hot steamy July day years ago, she showed up with buckets full of Iris divisions and said they must be planted right away...lol We didn't have a clue she was coming, much less bringing plants. So, while she sat on the porch yelling out "instructions" to hubby and me, we got busy digging up the bank and finally got them planted to her satisfaction. We were zapped. And the next year, not a single one returned. Talk about a hot sweaty lesson and one she has never let us forget.
I thought iris were hardier than that. Wonder why none of them took
Me too and don't have a clue unless we just mowed them down too close while cutting the grass? She was really picky about the ones she grew, and back in the 90's paying $10 or more for a rhizome was a lot of money for her to spend on one, and she gave us many. It's no telling what could have been.
Those irises you are describing Her Fruitiness are just the kinds I am going to get when we move to sun. The old fashioned kind are my favorite.
I had some of those, I got from ex's dad and step-mom's house. They were among the things he would not let me go back and get starts of. I need to go check out the country cemetaries and see what is blooming.
LOL..Crit please tell more about country cemeteries and blooms. LOL, sorry, just imagined you taking blooming plants from graves.
Hello to all. Sure is hot here now but early this am, needed a light jacket. Have all my Angels planted and now the fun begins.. watering, feeding and keeping the blasted worms off. O what a long hot Summer this will be..I've never planted so many.
LindaK, so sorry about your fingers and pray that someone will know exactly what to do to make them right.
Susan, I've goofed again and I have no idea how! Only one of my Caladiums are coming up. I checked the others and they felt either hollow or mushy.
Hugs
The vase of cut Irises were a big hit. My MIL's eyes just lit up when she saw them and immediately dove in for a sniff. Then before she knew about the pot of Geramiums we had for her, she was saying as soon as she had some and a few Petunias, she'd be set. Big surprise, love it when a plan comes together. We have to go back next week for a little more maintenance on her carport, will take Petunias then, and think she might let me dig some of her old-fashioned plain purple Iris. We'll see. And I want to snip a piece of her red climbing rose and see if I can get it to root.
Let me check my stash of Caladium bulbs, Faye. I had a few hollow ones too but still think I can fix you up :)
lol @ Faye. Picture this. Spring, 2011.... it's a beautiful spring day on a lonely country road in an old country cemetary. A lone person is scouting the terrain for flowers she can snatch................ No, no, no .....a lone person is scouting the terrain for flowers that need divided so that she can do them a service by thinning them. Not to be detected or to leave trash....she carefully takes all the leftovers home with her to be handled in only a way she will know.
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO EVERYONE! Even those who have 4 legged fur-babies
BEA-U-T-FUL marti!!!! If I had to choose one, it would be difficult but I would take the butterflies. Do wrens use them for nesting or what? Do you leave the nest in there for the next year, or how do you get the old one out. I'm not real familiar with how to use them, although I have seen a lot of them. You are soooooo talented!!!!

Those gourds are too cute....
Most of my relatives are buried in really old cemeteries, mostly on farms from the way gone by era. There are plants that have been there forever. Someone got the brillant idea a million years ago to plant ditch lilies in one of the old cemeteries....OMG, we went around trying to find the headstones and spray weed killer on those lilies....what a mess! Still way over grown. People do take cuttings from the old roses in fact that is how most of the old roses were saved is my understanding. We don't have anything like that in our cemeteries, some really old peonies, course ditch lilies....., some purple and yellow iris. Most of the plants get overgrown during the summer cause no one mows. They are about 1hour and 1/2 from me and I try to get over there with a weed eater once a month.
Going to the iris farm today, it is so pretty there. Later.
HAPPY MOMS DAY!
Thank You!! Thank You!!! I keep trying different things. Keeps me busy and off the streets! :)
The people I sold to in Calif, take them down and clean them out by shaking them and than using a screw driver to scrape them out with. Than they left them to dry in the garage for the winter. During the winter after they are dry respray them with the acylic sealer to further protect the outside. Let them sit til spring and than rehang them outside.
AWESOME MARTI I HAVE About 4-6 Apple Gourds out in my shed Just don;t know where to start on them
or when for i have so many other things going on right now don't have time for them .
Hope everyone had a great day I took plants over to mommas grave stopped to visit with my sisters & all of my little NIECES & NEPHEWS daddy got cold so had to come home but it was a day out :)

My lilies are looking so good I can't wait. DeeJay all the ones you sent in the daylily for postage deal have come back. I can't wait to see them bloom. My Asiatics that I just planted this Spring and some others that I had are full of buds coming. Now I just have to keep the deer from chewing out the tops. Sprayed yesterday and it finally looks like there is no rain coming for a little, so it should last a while this time.
Neener, have you tried putting human hair on the ground around the iris? They don't like the smell of human's and will stay away. Won't hurt to try it but it might save them.
I meant lillies. Too early, brain still asleep. lol
Actually, it will work to keep any type of wild critters away from our beloved plants.
Most hair salons would be glad to save you some. That's how they do it in Calif. to keep gophers away and mice and rats.
Since i have used " MILORGANITE & HANG My IRISH SPRING SOAP BARS Around the gardens the deer Or Rabbits have not touched the gardens yet this year .
FINGERS CROSSED :)))

LOL... dang squirrells keep unearthing my bulbs while they try to find their nuts.. they dug up a gloriosa lilly tuber and a pink moon vine tuber, little buggers..
do you have your Irish Spring or human hair out to deter them? I swear by the human hair. Your hairdresser will save clippings for you.
When you plant your bulbs plant them into chichen wire make a Tub or a Square of the wire place the bulbs in it plant Nothing will dig them up.
CRIT It Might Be EWWWWWWWWWW But No More then your Animal wast being used in the gardens DON"T Ya think :)) Human Urin also will detract them so have hubby or The men of the family go in your gardens if ya know what i mean :) hehe very cheap "LIQUID FENCE "
well time to go check on my babies so you have a great day
Iris are just starting to pop....sure don't need 98 degree weather today tho......don't want to cook them. My peony tree is blooming to beat the band....now this is strange, I have two peony tree, one white and one dark pink. The dark pink got broken up when DH dumped a ton of snow on it this winter and is loaded with buds, the white is a HUGE bush with a few buds, they can't be 2 feet apart.....very strange.
This is really all the bigger the pink bush is, cause so much got broken.
