Rose help! peace gone wild

We all tend to look at the destruction before we can see an answer.

The deer visited and ate all the asparagus in our 12' x 12' field, and left me exactly one rosebud on one bush but ate all rosebuds from many bushes as well as my favorite hosta. I need a gun with a silencer and someone who'll cart away the bodies! :-)

lol as for the bargain Hydrangea, which was a $5 florist Hydrangea that i'm trying to establish. it's in a container, i've been told it won't do well in our soil by a local nursery owner. it's a luechtfeuer or firelight Hydrangea, and he said for some reason the red ones don't make it out here. i also live right next to a limestone quarry... i pretty much have to buy 10 tons of decent soil. so yeah.... :( any recommendations for growing in a gravel bed? lol

Hi Outlaw,

Here's what I think with regards to your soil issue.

There is no possible way that you can grow hydrangeas on a gravel. But instead you can learn what soil condition best fit your plant. Here are some knowledge I knew about...

minerals - your hydrangeas need aluminum and iron to sustain the redness or the blueness of your flower. The rich content of which means they turn blue, the lesser they become pink, but with moderation it becomes red.

ph level - I guess with plants the acid level of the soil bed is important. for the red ones you need a neutral acid level of your soil, for the blue ones you should have a ph level of 6.5 down.

To achieve the desired ph level you need to have a drainage system. If not, watering the plant in a routine manner would be good.

I hope this help you somehow... :)

It's actually doing quite well in a container especially for the shape it was in. Initially it struggled, but i cut back some of the leaves as directed for rooting cuttings, and with some bonemeal, fertilizer coffee and love there is lots of new growth!
