Plant Propagation part XXXIII based on my own experience

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Sharon, I wasn't talking about "not responding." I was talking about acknowledging everyone who had not posted. Like, maybe they didn't have anything to contribute, so didn't. SO?

LOL, Please don't make a big deal of it.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I am doing the day lily for postage thing. There are more boxes not claimed if you haven't stopped in on plant trade.

I have gophers and rabbits. My dogs killed one the other day. I need to make some more jalapeno mix since I see holes all around and when I water I find the bottomless pits in my gardens.

We are out of drought, it always seems to be 5 to 7 years.

I don't know if my seeds will germinate. The first day I put some in the sun, they croaked. Some of them. My fault. I forgot them while I was planting.

Congrats Katie on the atv. fun, we have one but I never ride it. Shoulders are about to have surgery hopefully. I could not if I wanted to ride it or my motorcycle too...
My tendon sheath ripped from my job and they denied it. It is so bad that I can't bend my thumb so I could not pull my break in. Pissed me off that they denied it but actually if I fight it, it will take longer and my thumb will atrophy more than it is. I need my thumb so I will let my insurance fix it. Though it pisses me off so bad I could spit nails. I am not the only one in my job that got hurt doing what we do. My injury and hers were different but still from the same thing.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dawn, don't you have L & I down there? Labor and Industry? That normally pays for being hurt on the job. Who denied it? I can't believe L&I would.

So what do they have to do with your shoulders?

I planted tomatoes and peppers the 30th of March and 16 tomatoes are up and almost all the peppers heads are poking out of the planting mix. They look pretty good.l I guess I have got to get busy and plant some more seeds. I haven't put in any of the hollyhocks, petunias etc. Can't even put them in containers until May so I haven't been in any hurry. Hope I figured right and they aren't held way back by being late. Hard to say since last year June was so wet and cold nothing grew the whole month.

Well, guess I'll go to bed, I want to cover the ventilation holes in the sofits with window screen in the morning so the bats can't get in the roof. Those nasty little things should be showing up soon. Then we have to take the car in for the brakes in the afternoon. Always something.

Sorry I was crabby to you all today. Just been one of those weeks. Good night.

Pawleys Island, SC

Well, The storms that came through this morning ( maybe last night) may have decimated my seedlings because I had set them under a tree rather than back in the greenhouse. It is storming too hard to go out and check them. I have to go get another xray today, Doc said the right foot should be healed completely and it is far from it and then take my son to the dr. too. He is taking drivers ed this week, but he is rarely sick and although I hate for him to miss it, I took 1 look at him and sent him back to bed.
I worked for about 20 minutes yesterday and then had to give it up. My wintersowing experiment wasn't worth it in my opinion. The milk jugs germinated, but the 2 litre bottles and other containers didn't come close. It is easier for me just to wait until february and start them in bags.
I think for right now though, I am going back to bed.
talk to ya later

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Wow, the storms must have been nasty down South. They are putting up all sorts of Warnings and Watches here today.
I got up and was out with Barney and taking cuttings of black pussy willow to send to a man from MA who is the CEO of a company that injects trees instead of spraying. It is called www. ARBORJET.com. I wanted them to soak up some water before I get them in the Post office this afternoon. I have been waiting to mail them to him for weeks. He finally paid for them and now I can send them. I usually cut them the day I ship them but water them for an hour or more and then pack them in damp paper towel and wrap it in plastic bags. That works well. Priority gets them to their desination in two or three days.
We are having the calm before the storm, so I am taking the time to write this and have some coffee.

Sounds like you all are busy, so I will get back later.m BTW I think I am the bird having its mouth held shut by U KNOW WHO??????

Hey, I know we can not talk politics, but I see where our leader is going to run again. He has raised almost a billion dollars so far for his campaign. Why not forget the campaign and just put that billion along with the other politicians money into the programs that are in trouble and/or pay off some of the debts they continue to make. That would help big time. It is such a waste of my TV time and tax payers money. It is a whole year before they begin and they are already talking about it. What a bore. I hate politics. Most of the men/women who run are being paid by someone (like the tax payers) the entire time they are out campaigning. That does not seem right. Oh well, I may as well take a xanax and think happy thoughts because i sure get upset when I watch money going down the toilet.

Later. JB

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

morning all:
Dawn: Hire an attourny. there are plenty of sharks out there that will take the case on contigentcy. meaning they get a % of the settlement and you get fixed. if the employer wont pony up on something that happened at work then the attorney is the only option and it dose work. now they may fire you for some lame excuse but be prepaired .
Jeanette: it sounds like they have a nest in the attic. if you are selling the house then you really need to get the nest out. My SIL paid a couple thousand to have the nest in their house removed. I like bats but not in the attic. They eat their weight in mosquitoes and other insects.
Well to start the day Kim turned the heat off last night so I am freezing at the moment. its 66 degrees in here brrrrrr...... its suposed to get up in the 70's today and warmer all week so The worst is over and now its just a warm up. sun is shining and looks great but it can be a fooler as on some snow days it looks great with a blanket of white fluff and its colder than a ------ (fill in the blank). My helper is coming today at 11:00 ish and the siding peeps are suposed to be here then too (finish the punch list from last year).
its cuttings and fill flats day today. It seems everyone wants silver mound so its first on the hit parrade. I have a list compiled of about 65 different plants that i am doing this year either from seed or cuttings. I have decided a neat knew way to sell also. pad the per cell price and offer free shipping to the wholesaler customers. I think it will help as shipping seems to be the big head ache.
One of the members is brokering plants from different growers to all the folks who grow plants them selves in their back yard. I think its dirty pool but I am sure someone will figuire it out like myself. I am not going to complain because I don't want to rock the boat and get the sellers site taken away from us because its going to be my main source of sales with the market place and ebay suplamenting it with my hostages.
well enough ranting have a great day.
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, nothing could hold that mouth shut. Even knowing she can't talk about politics can't stop her.

Every agency is going thru the drill of deciding who in their departments are "essential" and who is "non-essential". It is so crazy 'cause they get paid anyway and yet they don't go to work. Makes absolutely no sense. These politicians are ridiculous.

Linda, what is wrong with your son? Don't you be walking on your foot until it is ready. You will do more harm than good. You will cause it to heal wrong. Then you will really have problems.

JB, my mom used to inject her trees with Cygone years ago instead of spraying. Is this something new? What does he use? She would shoot the stuff into the cambium of the tree and it would be good for about 3 years if I remember correctly. I started doing it too, but instead of using a hypo needle like she did, I would take a quarter inch drill bit in a drill and make the hole very shallow, just thru the cambium and then use an eye dropper to put some in the hole. Depending on the size of the tree, usually about 3 holes in different areas on the tree. Worked great.

The thing you have to be careful of is the kind of tree and the stuff you inject. Like you don't want to use it on a tree that has berries or something you, or the birds or animals, eat or use. It is just a systemic.

LOL, ok Dave, it's your turn.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Whoops!! We crossposted, but I am sure you will be back about this subject.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

ok my turn eyy.
yest there are a lot of different injectable for the trees jb you might look into it if you are not already doing it to the xmas trees. Iwas reading about some of it from a.m. leonards http://www.amleo.com/ They are a good source for lots of stuff. I price check between them, growersupply and green house mega store oh yea and can't forget ebay. systemics do alot of good.
I managed to fill 100 flats of 1801's today to get ready for plugs. I had my helper here today also. she was doing cuttings while I did flats. I still need to do another 50 flats but i need to get in more 1020 web trays. Me thinks my brain was a bit generous with how much room I have to grow in. of course it will help once the sold stuff get shipped. its like 10 flats of plants and then the bargin bin I am trying to find a home for. I really don't want to dump it all but I may have to.
well its time to lay down.
its been a marvelous day low 70's sunny a stark difference from last night's 35 degrees
TTYL
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I would love it if it would even stay 35 degrees at night Dave. Ours is back in the 20s this week. Crap, I sure hope it is not going to be another year like last year.

I need to get out and get my hay bales in place so I can water them down and start them decomposing. But it is cold for that too. I am going to have Bob help me put the visquine over the hoophouse and that should help heat it up.

Do you have any suggestions on how to get the nest out of the roof Dave? I don't have an attic. There is just the 6 inches between the ceiling and the roof that are the trusses. 6" . There is insulation in there and they probably have nests in there.

I probably should have had them take it right down to the ceiling boards, 1 x 6 T&G, Too late now. That would cost me thousands. Actually the cat keeps the bats away mostly. Yes, I know she eats them. I find bat wings every once in a while when I am vacuuming. Behind the chairs etc.

YEECHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

mulege, Mexico

I am wuite worn out tonight. Tony and I continues the yard clean-up. He made shelves for my plant room and I washed a lot of little containers. I'm now ready to get some seeds started. A lot of my backlog of seeds have just gone in planing aeas here and there. Of course, all the ones that are germinating are in one pot. We also got lots og general clean-up done. I paid for the ATV and will get it tomorrow when we have cleared its parking space. There is seaweed coming in so I'll be busy with that, too.

Got one solar light done.

Ate a little crow with neighbor Tom while paying for the ATV. Told him he was right about my yard needing to be cleaned up. He was kind of apologetic. I explained that some of the stuff has been saved to make planters that are high enough off the ground that the dogs don't trample them. I've now got a couple of those done. They have done a lot of concrete areas in their yard. I'd rather not do that but the dogs dig in the dirt. I envision a yard filled with aloe plants as they are about the only ones that survive the dogs.

I have a headache and am ready to lie down. I've been online looking at plants and seeds. I'm overwhelmed.

Our weather is warming up.

hugs, katie

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I heard one more freeze is coming. Oh goodie, just in time for my newly planted seedlings to croak and waste all my months of work.

I have not needed an attorney at this point because they have not been denying. I don't know what is going on now, they should have made a decision already.

They do have L & I here but it is called Workman's Comp and it sucks here in this state since old Swarzzeneggar was in office. It always sucked but worse now. I always said if your head was severed and they thought they could duct tape it back on to deny future medical, they would.

I feel so bad for all of you still in the Winter mode. It does make me rethink moving from my ugly desert. We have wild flowers all over. Poppy season is here, most famouse poppy pictures that you google will be take right here in my area.

That is the nice thing about Dave from DG, his new place you can talk about what ever. If you don't like it, they can block you off that thread so problem solved.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dawn, you lost me on the last paragraph. What do you mean "If you don't like it, they can block you off that thread so problem solved." ?

Seems to me if you don't like it you wouldn't go on there. Or am I missing something?

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Are you all asleep, or working in your gardens? Nobody on here since I was last night?

Lee, wait until Storm starts bringing you stuff. Or don't dogs do that? LOL, maybe just a bone. Guess you have never had cats. They always bring stuff home.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Yesterday, on the way back from the chiropractor, I stopped off at the local nursery to get my 4 cu.ft. of perlite and did find just a few plants, but ended up spending $60. or so, including the perlite. There was a beautiful variegated santolina looking quite golden and will fit nicely into the new "hot bed". Also there was a nice variegated buddliea, though I am not sure what will happen when its purplish-pink flowers clash with the warm colors. They claim deer-resistance, though in previous times they all got pruned by them, so I took them all out. I immediately drenched it in deer-repellant.

This area will have more supervision and more consistent spraying with the deer-repellant, as for now it is filled with spring annuals and bulbs for color. So they both were planted yesterday right after I got home. I gave space to them for their eventual size, as I tend to crowd plants. I hope to get it right this time as if the roots are crowded, they will never reach their true potential. I have many summer and fall annuals in the seed-beds as well as in cell-packs, of which were started from seed. I will be checking on everything today and re-arranging as necessary and potting up if anything is ready, though most are quite tiny.

Dawn ~ I hope for your sake your tenders don't lose themselves to the frost. Do you have something you can put over them to protect them at night? Our local nursery sells different kinds of row cover by the yard. What have you planted out? My WC settled for lifetime medical which applies to the treatment of my shoulder via a structured settlement. Before settling, they did pay all of the doc, PT and meds relating to that shoulder as well. It did take quite a bit of time, but worth it. I did not use an attorney. Sometimes they are more trouble than they are worth as well they take your money. The poppies are in bloom in Placerville and further down the hill, but it is early yet for our area. I know I should have sown some during the winter.

Jeanette ~ Are you going to use the hay bales for composting or a mulch? Will you be mixing anything with it? You planted your tomatoes already? Or were you referring to starting the seeds....popping up? Indoors? What else have you started from seed? I see that HD is selling tomatoes, but the local nursery is not. It has not yet "snowed on the dogwood", and they know we will get cold spells and possibly snow before then. I have not yet put out any "tenders". I have, however, sowed seed of tenders on the back porch as all of my inside shelves are already full. They will germinate when it warms up, not under lights and me trying to find places for them and then hardening off. Now the back porch looks rather full as well with pots and trays all over. I will go out to the nursery area and plant the bulbs that are blooming in pots as they did not get planted in the ground last fall as when it started to snow mid November, we had wet weather and soggy ground so it just was not possible. I put the bulbs away and then forgot about them, so I am glad that I discovered them in time, as only just a few had mold and I threw them away. After that I put them in gallon cans and took them out to the nursery area of the fenced garden area.

We, too, have bats and they try the same thing with us. Steve put screens up to where they get in the eaves and eventually into the house at times. We have devised a plan for when one occasionally gets into the house, though usually we are giggling when getting the little one captured into the paper bag. Then we just take it outside or sometimes we can direct it outside by opening the door. It would be funny to watch us doing it, however as sometimes this occurs in the middle of the night. It is weird having one fly over your face and then waking up to it.....EEK!

Katie ~ I, too, get overwhelmed at looking at plants and seeds. It is a fun diversion during the winter as long as one does not buy everything one sees....LOL!! Glad you are feeling better, but please do not over-do it. What seeds did you sow? Something besides aloe vera?? In your area, I would imagine a paradise of lovely plants with little or no frost and no deer!

Linda ~ How is your foot feeling today? Your doctor tells you it is healed, but it still hurts? HMMMM.....I bet you are protecting it from harm, I hope.

Dave ~ It sounds as though you are doing quite well this year compared to last year. Good luck! As long as you can feel good when all those plugs come in and are prepared with help, you have it made. I hope that the crazy weather has not affected your operation too much.

Well it is getting late and I must get outside as it is clear and 50° so I am dressed in layers and ready to go. It is supposed to get colder, then warmer...yeah, it is spring and totally unpredictable so I just will see what happens.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

I keep looking to make sure I don't trip over the cat, but there is no cat. Steve buried Sunshine next to Mutley.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

No I don't know how to get rid of bats except for using smoke but how the heck you would get smoke into that little area is beyond me. I wonder if that must be disclosed when selling a home? I know you are not sure they are nested there its just a guess right...wink wink nod nod...
I would think a pro would be able to get them out.

yes dogs do give gifts of their kills for you to see. its like look what I did MOM. a little bunny rabit, squirrl or bird is usually the gift of the day. of course sometimes its just the cotton tail of the bunny with a we bit of blood on it as proof of the kill. Bat wings that Kool

Ok cold protection for the over night hours... I use a frost blanket I bought as well as beach towels (yes we do have a sort of beach at the lakes.) drop cloths tarps sheets anything to provide a barrier to the cold and trap air below it. the trick is to remove them before it get too hot the next day. in the nursery we used to use shade cloth after we laid down all the tall stuff. bigggg production. lay it all down cover it ...next mornig uncover stand everyone up the repeat the next evening.
you can build mini hoops for the beds out of pvc and clips I have a source if anyone is interested. green house mega store also sells them but I prefer my source.

well fed-ex droped off 2 boxes today and I unpacked them and watered the trays. boy they are tiny. I would hate to try to keep them watered 285 cells per flat 8 flats and a flat of 36 munstead lavender for my cutting stock and a few to share. I got the following in

1. Astibe Bella mix
2. Coreopsis Rising Sun
3. Echinacea Pow Wow Wild Berry
4. Dianthus Dwarf Mix
5. Dianthus Indian Carpet Mix
6. Gypsophila repens ‘rosea’ - pink baby's breath
7. Gaillardia Arizona Sun
8. Lavender Munstead

I will try to take pics of everything

well its time to go
Dave

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Nice Dave.
Jeanette do you have bats in your belfree? How ever you spell it.
My friend in CO. had a bat trying to get in all frantically one time...the poor thing was at every window and going crazy trying to get in,it finally did and it went to the fire place when they noticed a baby bat had fallen in the chimney.

What I meant about "Mars" is that if you start a thread or a forum, it is yours. If people want to cuss or talk politics or religeon, DV does not care anymore, because you can decide who is allowed on your thread and who to keep out, therefore there is no cat fight, you just block them out of your site. : ) That is where we need to go to talk smack. giggle. I can't keep talking about this or I will be thrown there permanently.
I have packing bubbles that I could try to put over the tenders. GRR! I put them out too small, but they were starting to fail to damping off, so I figured I would have better luck with them in ground.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well, I have had a weird bug. Bad headache and ache all over. The strangest thing is my toes feel wet. It started yesterday and I checked my feet twice. I did not think twice about it until it happened again this afternoon. I talked to my son, the doctor, and he asked me if my feet were numb. I told him no so he told me I was probably just going nuts. Not to worry about it because soon I would not remember it. Love that boy.

Vern's ex wife died last night from ovarian cancer.

We are having wind gusts tomorrow now stated to be up to 60mph and snow in the mountains. Being in a canyon we do get the high winds. Maybe it will hit the other side of the town or down by the lake.

I would rather be on here with Jnette and JB and see if we can get away with it. I like being on here with the rest of you but I think we are the trouble makers. Well JB. maybe it is only you and I. Jnette is very passive, the majority of the time, which is a good thing. I have been over to cubits and find it boring. The composting and vericomposting are non-existent. Five individuals that left the Southwest Forum, just came back.

I will be back tomorrow but right now I am going to Google why your feet feel wet when they are not......Sharon,.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Don't know about puting it on a sellers disclosure Dave. They are only here 3 months out of the year, I will ask my sister tomorrow. Plus, a lot of people think that would be a real plus. I do have to admit that we do not have a lot of mosquitoes around the house like most people around here do. My sister goes thru a lot to get rid of mosquitoes, and never has been able to. Spends tons of money on all kinds of equipment. But she lives right on the river and I am about 5 or 6 hundred feet from the river. So, go figure.

No Evelyn, I plant my tomatoes in the hay bales. I don't take them apart. Get them decomposing and then plant the tomatoes. On the Strawbale forum.

I have my seeds planted in my house on some heat and lights. A lot of tomatoes and some peppers up. I cannot plant them out until May. I will show you how I planted them one of these days. I tried a lot of new things this year.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Appears we crossposted Sharon.

What do you want me to do, smack you? You are feeling so weak and head achey that you don't know what you are talking about. Wet toes for crap sake!! Never heard of such a thing. Did the dog pee on the floor and you walked in it? I'm with Todd. Going nuts. What was that cartoon you sent a while ago?

Are we going to get there? Yup, you just beat the rest of us.

Forgot to tell you all that it is snowing out here right now. And sticking, Lee??? Help!! It is the 6th of April!!

Wow, what a day yesterday. I really do not have time to chat now but I will be back and make comments on the smart ass remarks that have been made about me. Humpf.
That Humpf means that I am pondering and thinking of ways to get even. I do not get mad, I get even.

Hey Sharon, do not worry about your feet, as we say in the horse business."they are a long way from your heart".

Later all you mouthy individuals from the Western part of these United States.

You can be sure I will return. No cubits for this chick. JB

morning everyone: well my helper had to bale out today so its going to be a long weekend. going to shanhi my niece to help me saturday. I will get what I can get done today and tomorrow.
I woke up all fuzzy headed so I am still trying to shake it before I have to drive the nieces bf to work. last time for it yippie.... I can't believe that they only pay managers a bit over $10 and hour. no wonder the fast food and resturaunt bisness has gone to the birds. he told me one lady came in to apply for management and she was working at a pizza joint that paid her just over min. wage. pizza pizza

I spent a little time last night creating more room for flats. boy does the nursey look empty at the moment. pics later. well everyone take care. jeanette enjoy the snow...lol sorry coudn't resist.
Dave

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Seems the only way we can get anything out of the wicked witch of the east is to be mean. LOL

I am hoping to get out and clean up the area in the hoophouse. But this weather just can't seem to make up it's mind what it wants t do. Right now it is snowing again. No, what we got last night melted already.

Bob is going to spend the day burning. For some reason they say it is illegal to use a burning barrel. They would rather have you burn on the ground I guess. Doesn't make sense to me. Maybe you can explain it to me Dave. Seems to me it would be easier to control in the barrel. Anyway, that is what Bob is using.

Evelyn, what I meant when I said I was experimenting with my tomato seeds this year is,

1. I bought one of those seed starting kits from Gardens Alive that use plugs in individual holes.

2. I am using the 18 oz cups on others where some I filled all the way to the top, or near it, and others I filled about half full where I will add planting mix as they grow so the stem grows roots too.

3. Besides the plugs from Gardens Alive, I used 2 other growing mediums. One was Miracle Grow Moisture Control like Dave uses, only I added a slow release fertilizer, and in others I use Fox Farm's Happy Frog planting mix.

4. On all of them I watered with a solution of 1/8 tsp. of each, Mychorrizae, Dave's Tarantula, and a blend I bought off of ebay of Humic & Hulvic amino acids and kelp in about 5 quarts of water.

We will see what works and what doesn't. So far it took about 4 days for the tomatoes in the Gardens Alive plugs to come up but they were very wet and one dampened off. I did not get enough water in the 18 oz cups so added more and they started coming up after that on the 5th and 6th day.

Peppers in the Gardens Alive started coming up on the 5th day.

EDITED TO ADD: I forgot to say that I started them all on a heat mat and florescent lights down low. I did have a problem getting both heat and close lights to the Gardens Alive kit and also on the taller cups. LOL, so had them on the heat until they germinated and then boosted them up to the lights.

Good morning everyone. I have spent a couple of hours cleaning up my walk-in closet. After years of moving things around to accomodate whatever part of the house we were working on I''m finally able to get some things into their permanent locations. Also, am sorting out books to take to Goodwill when I go to Ca.

We are still doing outdoor clean-up. I'm getting some planter built along the fence in hopes that the dogs won't destroy them.

Most of my focus has been on getting in fruit trees and other perernnial fruit plants as well as building up the soil. I've had a lot of "learning experiences." (Great article on growing strawberries in the desert today.) Annual vegetables that I've tried have been destroyed by whiteflies. I have a new control which may work on them.

I'm also going to try thing that are silver or chatreuse under my brugs which are in containers almost three feet off the ground. The dogs are almost trained to leave them alone. I'll put aloes on the ground around them. I don't want too many things that I have to water as we hardly ever get rain here.

There is a nursery near San Diego where I may be able to get some more tropical fruit trees for reasonable prices. I hope to check it out when I'm up there. Meanwhile I have a couple of dozen little pomegranates which seeded themselves. MThese are for the red poms which are much more flavorful that the pink and white ones that mostly grow here. Neighbor Dana got a couple of pistachio trees from a local woman. I will go look for her one of these days as they are on my wish list. I'd also like to find a local grower with whom I can share plants and seeds

It's a dance: building the soil, attempting new plants, caring for the plants that are hanging in, seed starting. Soon our weather will be too hot to do anything but survival tasks outside.

My foot has been pretty bad this week. I'm looking forward to seeing the podiatrist and finding out what can be done. I have more space now for seed-starting containers. Very glad I don't have the volume of cuttings that Dave has to deal with.

I want to get some heating mats this fall so I can get some of the more difficult seeds started in our cooler weather and planted out before the heat sets in.

The seaweed is starting to come into shore so that's one more task to do as we are able. We have about one month when it washes up.

Wish I could clone Tony so he could do three things at once while I point!!

hugs, katie

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

It is snowing here, too! Not a lot, but just a dusting. It is supposed to be a fast-moving storm....it better be outta' here by tonight!

The last two days I have been working on the new "Hot Bed', and of course was generous with the deer spray, half-expecting to see the flowers gone by the next day, but they are still there! Yellow Mammoth crocus, one Pelargonium (tender, red geranium), the only tender plant there, ranunculus in yellow, orange and red, a few Gerbera Daisies in yellow, orange and red, not sure how hardy they are, but one froze solid in its pot and has come bck with healthy leaves, so I think, OK. There are some solid yellow pansies or violas, not sure which, but they were in my color bowls all winter. I left one or two to keep their flowers showing, but severely trimmed back all the rest. I snagged them and re-arranged the color bowls into pinks and purples without yellow. Pretty soon it will be time for warmer-season flowers anyway.

It looks nice now, but I realize that the bloom time for these is about over. I have been starting many things from seed. Also I have ordered from some co-ops on the other site. Bluestone Perennials was 50% off everything that were in 3's and 25% off of those plants that were singles. Lakeside Callas, perennials from Terra Nova...wow all these great places and plants that were exceptionally priced as well as quality. What is amazing to me is that I can work more hours in the day outside with little pain. True, my back hurts, but my main concern is the shoulders, and they are doing much better. The bed is almost all dug...just a few more square feet of hard red sandy clay to deal with. It has not yet dried out, so it is fairly easy to dig...at least I can dig into it. Once it is dry, forget it, unless it is soaked and then let dry out a bit, just that perfect combo of not too wet or not too dry. It is harder to do it that way than when it is naturally drying out from the wet winter.

There is one tulip I must mention to anyone who might like to grow them. This tulip I planted ever so many years ago and it has been more than perennial. It will even push through the hard clay soil of the south side of the house, as I had formerly had that in a red and white theme. I have dug them out of there and put them into the formerly triple dug bed, of which more organic matter has been added so they should be happier there. Oh, yeah! Her name is Red Riding Hood. If you get her, you will have her and her daughters for a very long time.

It has stopped snowing and looks to be clearing up, though cold and wet outside. I will stick to indoor chores today. Plenty to do.

Have fun everyone!

Now now... she is not the wicked withch she is the good witch from the east. We have to watch out for them because they don't all migrate from about tulsa south so once they set up house its there for good. along with a life time supply of bat guanno.

Sharon I am praying for you to get better soon. I had a buddy tell a story about when he and a friend were out fishing of an evening. the next thing he knows his feet are wet. in a panic he reaches for the flashlight to find something to bale with. It turned out that he had stepped into the beer cooler. I had to share that because the wet feet reminded me of it. I hope its nothing to terribly wrong.

well I got 3 trays done today. my helper couldn't make it so I was on my own. I still have the weekend to go. and I need to get soem soil in... just takes money. I did manage to stretch the soil though. got 100 trays out of 6 bags of miricle grow with polimers. Once I get everyone planted and watered in I will do my application of rooting and michorhyza application.
I will say I was a bit disappointed with the pink babies breath. they are not rooted well at all. I am going to try to either build a plug pusher or let them grow a few weeks. A plug pusher is a board with nails or pegs to loosed the rootball from the plug tray. with the soil being so much heavier than the top and small roots they just seem to be looseing the rootball and just top and roots come away from the tray. now this would not be a concern but I am afraid I am looseing some roots and causing damage. I did one tray and stopped so I could move on th a more friendlier tray.

ok the pic is of the west side of the nursery after I shifted some stuff around. I did relocate the 4 or 5 trays of misc. stuff in the front raised bed. Its now all full and I have just enough room to fit everyone I bought in.

Oh yea one more thing... we have to replant tulips here every year. we might get 2 seasons out of them but they just curl up and die a slow painfull death. I can hear them all crying in the distance...listen and you can too.

Well, we are having a major windstorm. The landscapers showed up and I told them they were P**ing in the ocean. The more they picked up, the more the wind blew into the garden.

I think it is a toss up on the "Most Wicked" JB or Jnette. I actually think they are the same person. Then we have sweet Linda, Lee, Evelyn and Dave. Dawn, Katie and I are just on the edge. Edge of what I do not know.

And I will sell tickets if you want to watch Jnette "TRY" to smack me.

Katie, it sounds like a never ending journey you are on with your garden.

We spent two weeks in San Diego every year until last year when we went to Hawaii. The grandchildren would pile the seaweed as high as they could get it and try to keep it from going out with the tide. We would let them because they would wear themselves out and go to bed early.

I just got back from walking the dogs and it was scary. I thought a tree was going to fall on me. They are snapped branches and leaves everywhere. After midnight the wind is suppose to be gone but then the cold temperatures are suppose to hit.

I am feeling better today, a little better than yesterday but my toes still feel wet. I did not Google that but I will. It could not be from being nuts because I have been nuts for over 10 years.

My hairdresser moved to another shop because the shop where she was closed down. She rents her station for so much a month. At least the new shop is closer to home. Manicurists and hairdressers have been hurt big time in this economy.

I cannot believe JB is still living where she is living. Everyday on the weather channel, her area is either, green, blue or orange.

Vern is eating better and appears to be walking better.

I was suppose to go to a Roundup in Southern California this weekend but not with this weather. I have driven across that part of the desert with high winds and it is really scary. Today we could not see the mountains because of the blowing sand.

Evelyn, all your flowers are probably beautiful because of your cooler weather.

Talk to you all later. I need to give the dogs a bath. Sharon.

LOL, Where can I get tickets?? (kidding) - but very amusing! Rj

Now that's the first, I have never been called sweet in my life, Boy do I have you "snowed"
Has been doing everything here, rain, sun, wind, snow, not sticking. None of my seeds have come up!!! JB, you must have jinxed all seeds hehe I am ready to give up, but can't afford to do the yard any other way, so I will try again next year,. Course, the way the weather is, probably have enough time to reseed, if I had them.
Diet is coming along, but the sugar is staying up don't know what else I can do, haven't gone off the diet so I don't know what is causing it.

Later all, Lee

Rj!! What are you doing peeking in here? It's not allowed. You gotta speak up and add your 2 cents now and then. Not to just be obnoxious. LOL, gotcha!

Dawn is the one that is always yelling "Cat fight" She would love to see one. Think she watches the wrestling matches on TV.

Well, as you guessed, I have been planting seeds all day so now feel like a fight! I can't find some seeds I bought a while back. Not that I am low on seeds! Need to throw some out.

Randy I still am using that Space City fertilizer you sent me. Just use it for the brugs, and alternate it with triple 20 so it will last. I looked at the Hibiscus Society down there on the computer and they must not sell it any more. Oh well, I am about to give up on those plants anyway. This is just the wrong country for them. But, I did figure out the best way to carry them over when I sent cuttings to Dawn and Dave. I took some good sized cuttings with Ys on them and if their weather was right they should be blooming by now. I tossed the roots. And then I lost all but 2 of mine.

I am really tired of fighting with them tho.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Lee we cross posted. What seeds do you want? Perennials, I might have a few. Plenty of annuals. I am just now planting seeds. Started the first of this month. Last week. We do have a short season but can't get them outside too soon anyway.

Let me know what seeds you want. Or, would you like me to send you some I pick out? Tell me perennials, are you zone 4? Not sure what zones I have.

tomatoes? I have a lot of different ones of those.

Let me know.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Lee, I also have many seeds. Do you want vegetables, flowers or what?

RJ, right now I am negotiating with Ticketmaster. I will let you know when the tickets go on sale. We are thinking MGM Grand sports arena. I know a whole bunch of people that would loved to see me smacked....LOL

Right now the wind has calmed down but wind warning is still on until midnight.

I have not gardened for three days. I think that is a record. See you all later, Sharon

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

It would be an awfully short show. They would yell to get their money back. I don't beat up on people. One smack.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Oh this is great fun to watch you girls pull cyber hair. F I G H T!
It is freaking cold here. 90 to 36 at this moment. My gosh mother nature take your pills already.

Katie I want to see pictures of your place.

My early blooming roses like Lady Banks roses are budding out. Which btw have any of you seen the new red LB rose. I bought two at lowes.
My Wisteria once again dissappoints. No blooms. I could have sworn the year I first had it, it was blooming so I know it is over 7. I dug all around the roots like the article said, but nothing. I saw one in bloom so I know I missed the boat again. It is not big, but it will do better now that I trasplanted it to where my doggie is buried. It is one with him now. My poor Corbin is a Wisteria now. I have to work on his memorial area now. This one will be hard scaped more than landscaped.

Sharon is your husband reacting to the death of his X at all?

mulege, Mexico

What's with all the foot problems? I must have overdone yesterday I am really hurting today.

Sharon, my life here is a neverending dance. I think of it as living in the center of a large flower. What I am doing is the footwork to make my vision a reality. Better to think of it as a dance than work.

I have a wisteria which is also not blooming. However it is alive and growing so I'm hopeful. I don't think I've seen any here so it may be the first. I've lost a few; I'm glad this one seems happy here. Berkeley has some gorgeous wisterias; thanks for reminding me of them.

My atv is home. I'm not used to driving it yet and don't want to practice while I'm in a lot of pain. Dana warned my not to gun it while going down our hill. I laughed and laughed. Our hill goes straight into the Mulege river. I had visions of a ski jump and an atv with pontoons

The buds on the schotia tree are starting to open and I think every bird in the neighborhood is here for nectar. They also look for goodies in the compost and leave their own contributions.

I have one little cherimoya and several more starting to sprout

I will check my plants down in the arroyo and then lie down and read for awhle. Trying to work (or dance) while in pain is an invitation to accidents.

hugs, katie

mornin:
well my brugs are just leafy no blooms but thats because of bing in the grow room. I managed to kill a few plants in there. out of site out of mind. I will be moving them outside again this weekend and finding permanent placement for them. I am sure its the cooler room is a factor in why only leaves. I will start heavy feeding them and a couple of shots of michoryza and the should start to bloom.
not much to say today is planting day #2. I hope to be done sunday, just in time to pull plants for shipping. Big day on monday so I may not be on that day.
well gotta go get a check in the bank and start planting.
Dave
