Hoshi no Flamenco is the first to open in my garden.
Clematis are Starting...
Hoshi no Flamenco is like red velvet. It's really wonderful.
What a treat
gosh your so lucky all I'm going to get this week is 5 inches of snow !!!! I can hardly wait for the flowers ;0)
Gloria
gorgeous color. We are supposed to get more snow too.....:(
Us, too.
What a nice treat! Love the color too. cattjovi, how old are these clematis? Are they in the leap stage?
I used to think spring belong to Tulips, now I changed my mind. Spring BELONGS to Clematis! What vibraint blooms. Congrats.
Both planted in 2008.
Gosh all I have now area few trying to sprout up. Ugh Makes you wish you lived in the south.
cattjovi...A quick question....How do your plants fare in the southern heat? Do they go dormant, or continue growing when it's warm?
England has so many beautiful varieties...without the summer heat you have...I bought one at a plant fair last year....it has died down to
the roots over the winter.....seems to be trying to re-grow now...is that normal? It's a white double one....Thanks
Honigirl, the hot humid South (like cattjovi and where I'm in the States) is ideal for Clematis growing. I too have a double white Clem. and it behaves similiar the first year I planted them. The second year it had more greenery showing all through the winter... subsequent years it didn't fade through the winter at all. Such as this past winter, here they're making buds.
It's so nice to exchange gardening information with someone aboard. Please share with us how is your climate is like in Pieve di Compito?

I have this area that I have been wondering if I can put a clem here. it is off the deck behind the steps next to the house. That little nook you see. The roots would get shade from the railing of the steps, but the vine would grow up in the sun onto the railing of the deck. Is this a good place to do this, it faces the south?
Sounds very good, Marie. Keep the top well mulched with compost, if possible. Will the container be inside a fancy pot to protect it from the heat of the sun?
Clems want cool roots. I'm not sure how cool the roots will remain - that would be my main concern since the spot faces south.
I have question. I've been trying to keep up with y'all about planting clems. Do you bury them deeper than they were in the pot? And I see I should tip them to point them where I want them to climb.
kwanjin - definitely plant them deeper. They should be planted so the top is 2" below the soil line. Yes, angle them to where they will grow.
Marie - do you have a container to fit the area? Looks like it should be fine.
In both cases, please use compost to top off the planting area. It will help keep the soil cool and that's what the clematis want.
kwanjin
yes, plant them an inch or two deeper than what they were in the pot and plant them at a 45 degree angle towards your trellis. This should encourage the basal stems to sprout.
Oooh Marie, based from my experience. Although it looks inviting to have a lovely clem. there at your little nook. But foundation planting that's so close to your wooden deck and house foundation is inviting rot problem. I recently has to replace a wooden deck, and it's quite expensive. This year I vow not to let standing moisture destroying my outdoor living space. Other than that, the condition would be ideal base on sun/shade exposure.
I will do so. Thanks, folks!
Lily Love, the foundation is actually under the house by a little more than a foot. it is an over hang so I dont have to worry about it being so close to that. I thought that maybe since a clem is not a year round thick vine and it does not cling to its support like ivy, that the deck railing would be ok.
anyone have more thoughts?
Will you have some kind of support like a trellis or some kind of wire for the clematis to cling to or will it just roam free? I'm guessing you will have something for it.
From what I can see the clematis would be in at least one pot on top of the gravel, right? If that's the case it should be fine.
Oh yes pirl, I always have to put up some kind of wire or string for the clems to climb. But I have some left over lattice that i was going to cut and put up there for it to climb. In fact with the way the rest of mine are growing I had better get out there and start the twine on the rest of the trellis's.
Congrats! First born always exciting. I meant first bloom of a variety that's. :)
very pretty.
Ramona is nice and dark in Texas but lighter in the northeast. Very pretty.
Pirl, why is that? Cooler temp.? I have one that looks very much like it. But I thought it was a juvenile form of 'Multi-Blue'....you know before the double flowers become fully double....
Hmmm, Inthegarden, your pix does resemble Multiblue to me. I could be wrong. Arlene, see the center on Inthegarden's Ramona?
Yes, I do.
Our local horticulture guy said clem's and astilbe are the two biggest errors in greenhouses where they plant seeds. My understanding is clematis are grown from cuttings, not seeds, but maybe some places do that. Anyhow, there is a greater chance of an error...then there's human error as well.
My friend, Louise (venu209) lives in New Jersey, three hours away. We both have the exact same clematis from the exact same place, planted from the same batch, the same week, and yet her flowers are gorgeous compared to mine. Louise's is the darkest version while the palest is from Simply Clems (where we bought them), and the larger photo is how it blooms here.
I did read somewhere recently the cooler climate produces darker colors.
Nice clems Pirl. I think my MultiBlue is dead but its snowing so I dont care about anything.
Maybe chocolate would help.
If it is dead April will tell for sure,I will plant a Caroline or Vagabond in its place.
Caroline, my mothers name

I have been looking at Caroline off and on for years. Just love it.
Mine is comming from Joy Creek
Lovely, Jo Ann.
I've been looking at Joy Creek and hoping I won't give in to 'Pauline'.
They have bokoo bucks for shipping.
I'm looking at Helleborus and they have some nice ones but my faves are all sold until spring 2012
Thanks. That may make it easier to resist.
I avoided the super hefty shipping charges on clematis Betty Risdon recently by just not ordering it from another vendor. $65.00 is a bit much for one clematis.
I don't usually order online or long distance. I try to support local nursery...bought me an 'Avant-Garde' the other day. It's in a gallon pot for a mere 19 something bucks. Have any of us here has experience with A.G. clem.? I noted that JeanneTX has them, but haven't seen her posting yet for the season.
