Clematis are Starting...

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

He is about to get alot of inquiries!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Does he ship?

Richmond Hill, GA

He and his wife make deliverys to all the local rose societys within a 4 hour drive from their business. He told us he's getting to old for that so he is going to start shipping and start a website.

Shipping 50 pounds will be expensive, I'm sure.

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

True. I cross posted before I saw the 50 lbs.

Athens, PA

Cat - your clems are so beautiful. I can only hope mine look half as good. I would be interested in Purely Organic as well. I hope they have smaller bags than 50#. Even if they shipped it here, I would be hard pressed to move it from the front porch where it would be delivered.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I have Ashva ordered as well as Caroline. Its nice to see larger photos of the whole plant.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I just got off the phone with Jim's wife. She said they normally ship the 50 pound bag, which costs $30.00, and shipping generally doubles the price. She will call me back with exact numbers.

We don't have mail delivery at home and have to pick up all mail and packages at the post office so I'm hoping this can be sent UPS or my husband will have difficulty getting it to the truck!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

That's when you find out if a Sven works at the post office to bring it to the car for you ^_^

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I've seen the post office employees and though they are very nice they are not the Sven type! Susan offered to send the delivery in two 25 pound bags but I'm still thinking about it. Delivery would be $31.69 and the product is $30.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

OUCH!

I have some frozen fish in the freezer that is too old to eat, so I'm going to "plant" it with some stuff that is waiting to go in the ground. I also have some alfalfa and bone meal.....I'm getting close :)

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

But will the cats get closer?

I had thought of my own concoction but they seem to have a proven product.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I assume no closer than this

Actually there are no cats that roam around here, but the fish might start a new trend :)

Hi everyone, I have survived another close call with the weather, it is scary. My clematis survived the wind and a hard raign, so far so good. Does enybody uses rabbit food soaked in water as a alfalfa tea? I have been useing on my hollyes and I see lots of new leaves after the treatment. I could use them on clems. I use 1 qt of rabbit food in 5 galon bucket of water, let it sit for a few days, then you put a close clip on your nose and water your plants. It stinks , but someone said it works.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Glad you made it through all the rotten storms, Etelka. I have used alfalfa meal but not the way you did it, which is the right way.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Alfalfa Tea!!........Yes, it stinks, but the plants love it.

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

It is very cheap to buy in the feed and seed store, probobly under 10 doll for 15 pound of rabbit food and it is moslty alfalfa. We used to raise rabbits for meat, but that was 15 years ago.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Ohhh Venu I could forgive anything that cat did.
No Svens at out PO either. most could loose 30 pounds to start.

Athens, PA

Louise - Kitty is adorable!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Picture perfect, Louise.

Bugsy says Thank You. He is a little devil though.

Naugatuck, CT(Zone 5a)

As far as the purely organtic, 2 cups per plant how often?

Richmond Hill, GA

Dem, They recommend 3 cups per rose in the spring and about the same every 4-5 weeks during the growing season. I cut that back to 2 cups for all my clems. I will probably hit all the clems again in May.

Your local feed store or garden center will carry almost all the ingredients listed in 20-40 pound bags and you can make your own. Here's what I use and have had great results.
I use a 1-1 ratio or a five gal bucket. I have over 135 bushes and plants to feed.

1 bucket rosetone
1 bucket kelp meal
1 bucket fish meal
1 bucket alfalfa meal
1 bucket cotton seed meal
1/2 bucket green sand
Mix thoroughly and give each bush 2 cups scratched into the ground

My liquid formula: is mixed in a 32 gal garbage can and dipped out with a one gallon pitcher, each bush gets one gallon or less depending on the size of the bush.

2 cups peter's prof. 20-20-20
2 cups fish emulsion
2 cups Epsom salts
2 Tbsp super thrive

April 1st Liquid feeding

April 15 Dry feeding scratched in

May 1 Liquid feeding

May 15 1/2 cup blood meal scratched in on each bush

June 1 Liquid feeding

June 15 1/2 cup blood meal

July 1 Liquid feeding

July 15 1/2 cup blood meal

Aug 1 Liquid feeding

Aug 15 1/2 cup blood meal and one cup of the Dry feed

Sept Liquid feeding

This is considered an all Organic- with liquid supplements and stimulants. If you like to use alfalfa tea you can omit the superthrive, won't be needed.

Hope this helps
Happy Gardening

Forgot to add: This is for my roses and clematis

Diamond, is this something i could feed Peony trees and itoh's ?

Toledo, OH(Zone 5b)

dem2rd, this program has some high nitrogen with the liquid and I would be a little careful to add to much to peony's. You don't want too long of stems on your peony. The dry feed would be just fine.

I use a little on my peonies though. I feel the need to feed.

Naugatuck, CT(Zone 5a)

Okay, thx!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I like that Dan....the need to feed:) Is that anything like pining to prune??

Athens, PA

I enjoy pruning my clems. It is one of the first things I do in the gardening season and I feel that it begins the season. I tend to get excited about pruning and fertilizing them....

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I also enjoy it. Maybe it's just knowing that when we're pruning we're also thinking of the great beauty to come. It's also not exactly a hard job so it goes fairly fast.

Toledo, OH(Zone 5b)

I do pine to prune! I like pruning both my clematis and roses. I mostly prune in the evening after work and cup of coffee, it relaxes me.

Athens, PA

That sounds so nice, a cup of coffee, my pruning shears, and a bag of fertilzer too..... Heaven!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Speaking of pruning, I was in Marshall's tonight and they had pruners........I couldn't resist, only $8.00. If I lose them in the garden I won't be upset.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

It seems we have dozens of pruners. Mothersday and xmas gifts from people who dont know what else to give.

Sanford, MI(Zone 5a)

I need new pruners and shovels !!!!! they all decided to break last fall ;0(

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We have a lot, too, but they're either too easily lost or they break or they just don't suit the job.

We gardeners need to have a pruner on a chain around our necks (locked in the closed position).

Athens, PA

I like having a number of pruners..... I like having some on my potting bench in the cellar, some out in the garden shed and some in my catchall basket in the laundry room. Pruners are something I don't think you can have too many....

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

So many pruners and so little time.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

LOL, Pirl! I've had the same pair of pruners for years, and amazingly, only the second pair I've ever purchased.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Wish I had a lobster roll for every pair I've broken or lost. Jack found a pair in the compost last year...they still worked.
