Tropical Garden # 95
Does anyone have Lotus seeds to trade or for postage?
Kay, I might have a couple of lotus seeds somewhere. I am on my way out of town to visit my son and his family in JAX. Please dmail me and I'll be reminded to look for them when I get back on Monday.
KayJones, I've read that Lotus seeds are viable for many, many years. I've tried to grow them before with marginal success. They grew, but didn't flourish then subsequently got 'lost' in the the crowd. Maybe other marginal plants crowded it out or something happened. The original parent plants which I purchased from a local gardener shop weathered well here the past 5-6 year in a large tub. They survived our mild winter being covered with occassional ice layers. After the winter dormancy, they're now awaken and sprouting to my delight. Good lucks with your quest for those beauties.
HollyAnnS, what an inspiration! Love, love that Gazebo setting!
We really enjoy it a lot. There is very little shade in the back yard and it makes a great spot to sit outside. Surprising how much cooler it is under the Gazebo.
Hi Everyone!!
Lili_love, that is another prize winning picture! We hope to see a few more.
I have to agree with you on the Queen Emmas, they are elegant plants that just get better with age.
Kay Jones, The crinums will not be over 1ft long and they will take a couple of years before they bloom, the burgandy foliage is very pretty.
I will mail them out next week.
RachelLF, thanks for the memory jolt! Without any foliage or name tag, I overlooked the Anthurium chiapensis. It is quite healthy and in the process of leafing. The anthurium 'Ace of Spades' you sent me, lost its foliage as well but is on its way to recovery. Thanks!
I had a little accident today, while changing out a rotted pole on my variegated Monstera, I decided to wrap it around the pole instead of straight up like it was. It was already touching the plastic and I thought it would have a little more room to grow if I wrapped it around the pole. In doing this I snapped it in two. I have planted the other half beside it hoping it will root and give a fuller look.
Rachel,
Would you be willing to sell me an offset of your Macrorrhizos x Longiloba; or is it one of LariAnns plants with the non distribute clause?
Beautiful, healthy plant by the way!
rita,
tell me about the June plum....
Thanks, Rita - where is your 'wish' list?
Rita, is that a Bloom Bud I see on your Monstera? WOW!
Debra, gorgeous hibiscus blooms. It's been a while since I've seen any blooms from mine and I hope your Anthurium gets back to growing well again for you.
Rita, it's good to read those two Anthuriums are on their way to recovery and I'm sorry about your accident concerning your var. Monstera. It sure is looking happy though.
Homer, that Alocasia was sent to me from a very nice person that is no longer a member of D.G. I will gladly send you the next pup I get from it, as I know you will give it a good home.
LOL Rachel and Debra....well if you don't want to drag plants in and out better move to South Florida. ! After the last 3 winters I'm beginning to think the "powers that be" will have to redo the Zone charts !
Rachel - I'll d-mail you with the website for the Welsh's.
Holly - I love your gazebo too.....I'd like to do something like just off our very tiny back porch...
Thanks, We worked on it over a few years. First year we laid down a few RR ties and put up the gazebo and then the next year we laid the main brick floor and then last year we extended the brick floor and added the corner beds. It is a real oasis, with the pool, ponds and bird feeders nearby.
I tried yesterday to get a few pics of my Ox Tongue and African Mask but I will have to try again.
Good morning, Debra (etal)! Which morninglory is that? I love the color!
Good evening Everyone.
GAgirl1066, the Spondias dulcis (june plum) are a fun fruit, especially with the Gk. I found it at a Vietnamese store here in Dallas. This is a dwarf and will not get too tall. It did lose all its foliage last winter but kept the fruit.

Kay Jones, I am working on that list.
Rita, I used to have the skunk lily when I lived in Missouri - beautiful! I moved it to Florida with me and planted it in our sand - it didn't come back for me.
Prita,
Nice Dwarf Variegared Odora! I got your slack next winter on your Luteas I have 2 babies already and it's only March.
Holly,
Looks like a great place for an Apple Martini! Yea that sounds like a good time to plant your A. Portoras Your last freeze date around first week of May?
Rachel,
I will give it the best home I am capable of! Thank You; it looks like it will be gorgeous and quite large!
Kay,
Hey; Yes it is very nice and healthy!
Ardesia,
I would say Alocasia bulbs @ 20-25% above ground is a good rule of thumb.
MJS,
Yes maam; they were all in the garage at one time or another!
Copy away, I got my idea from an old DG Thread and then just tweaked it a bit.
I think our frost date is about May 15th. I usually am safe after Mothers Day.
Kay Jones, will have to look up the skunk lily. With a name like that, I know that I will want one. lol
homer1958, thanks, I have a lot to learn from you. All these years growing Luteas and not one baby to show.
HollyAnnS, I will wait to mail the package the week after Mother's Day.
I know that you will be busy getting a party going in that beautiful back yard.
Our average last freeze is around March 13. The last freeze officially has occurred as late as April 13, I've got my fingers crossed that it does not happen this year.
I have no problems getting these Zingers to grow and multiply!
Rita, skunk lily is botanically known as "Crown Imperial" lily, like the one you have in the picture above.
