Early Bloomers

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Sounds like a winner! I am also interested in the support you have. It looks like wood. Is it something you put together?

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Here is a full picture of the arbor.
I bought it a while ago at the Dallas farmers market.
It is rod iron with free rust - just like in Italy.
I have 3 arbors in my front yard just like this. Love it !

Very beautiful!!!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

LOVELY!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Duuuuuuuuude. Those roses over the door are beautiful. But so is everything! I really do love the arbors. I love gingerbread, and curly cues and ordinary items made special by material or shape. Many of you AMAZE me with the shear volume of gardens, beds, plants you keep. Thank you so much for SHARING your beauty with us! Janet

The rose on top of my front door is:
ZÉPHIRINE DROUHIN
http://www.heirloomroses.com/cgi-bin/browse.cgi?page=item&cat=13&item=136
It is an amazing rose. I blooms once a year, but what a show and so fragrant.
I selected this rose because it can grow also in the shade. In that location I have morning sun and afternoon shade.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm officially jealous! LOL It's just simply stunning!

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Here it is: ZÉPHIRINE DROUHIN
It blooms normally after April 10th. Solid flowers!

Interesting flower combination;
Wave Petunia
Green Bok Choi (vegetable) which is bolting with those yellow flowers
Purple Bok Choi (vegetable)

I planted the Bok Choi while waiting for the Daylilies in the back to pop out ... but I really like it and I will do it again next year.

I had ZÉPHIRINE DROUHIN but it never looked like that!
That is a nice combo with the bok choi. Do you know the name of the purple clematis?

Gainesville, TX

wonderful! beautiful gardens!

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

The purple Clematis is Jackmanii

a few of the plain old oldies, I love

But those are much too far apart and no weeds, what's up with that??
LOL! Mine have needed separated for so long....maybe this fall. Love you use of the natural rock too.

Cleburne, TX(Zone 8a)

Beautiful, sharondippity. Just perfect. I, too, love the natural rock.

Gainesville, TX

Sheila, you don't really think I would leave a weed in before I snapped a picture........ grins.....a six by six area, 30 minutes of prep with 10 minutes for weeds 10 for compost to cover the soil, 6 snapshots, 5 minutes of editing, and viola! a picture fit for Dave's . It's my Martha complex

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL Sharon!! Those are certainly some pretty irises!! I found the first scape on one of my irises yesterday. I'm so excited! I received it in a trade last spring, so I've been waiting a year for it to show it's pretty flower.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

The bluebonnets are blooming! I think I threw seeds out in fall of 2009 (!!!) and they finally started sprouting last summer/fall.

All is well in the world when I see the Four Nerve Daisies break out in bloom. Such a happy flower!

LOL Sharon!!
Love the bluebonnets and 4 nerve Stephanie. I saw my little patch of 4 nerve is coming back...bluebonnets were doing fine until that last freeze, then they dissapeared. :-(

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I have no luck at all with Bluebonnets.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Well I am in good company then LOL!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

One of my bluebonnets looked pretty sad after that last freeze, too, but it's still blooming. I thought the weeds would've given it better protection. LOL

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Very funny Sharon! I remember many pictures of my children that I rather not share b/c of the pile of clothes in the background. Now you know why I have so many flower closeups!
I threw some bluebonnet seeds in my xeri bed last year, but so far nothing. My black foot and 4 nerve are blooming and many others getting ready. Finally this year I will get poppies!

Drthor, isn't it funny how the flower "rules" don't apply here. Jackmanii is supposed to be a Late Large Flowering clematis. It must look fabulous growing through the rose. Nothing like a natural trellis.
What a great time of year. This is Bijou just starting.

My salvia "May Night" is going like gangbusters!

Thumbnail by stephanietx
Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

That is gorgeous Stephanie, if it was a native I would be stealing it from you!!!.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have a bit of everything in that bed, but I'm slowly adding more natives. I love this salvia, but it does STINK!! LOL The bees flock to it so I'm thinking of dividing my clump and moving some to my veggie garden.

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

LOVE the May Night, Stephanie! Salvia is truly one of my favorites--in any color or variation.
This year I'm going to try to grow white sage (S. apiana). I have red and blue that come back for me every year--the blue like a perennial, and the red self-seeds. I have 'Hot Lips' that never dies back--the only S. I have ever seen that is an evergreen. I've not had any success collecting seeds from it, but successfully got a start for a friend by layering.

My garden was neglected for the most part for the past two years, so now I'm working it in earnest, and loving every minute of it.
I miss the daily work in the garden though; but thankfully the days are longer again now--yea!! more daylight!

Can someone tell me when I should expect my bananas to show some signs of life? I really love them when they're grown and full, but they're so depressing all dead *crooked smile*

Here's my favorite early bloomer.... Oxalis... 'Francis' (my dad's name)

Kenboy is the banana expert...mine is mush now hoping it will send up something soon.
My Hot Lips salvia was given a haircut last year and I am planning on moving it because it don't bloom like it should just grows! I do have a nice size start I am going to share this year too.

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

My Hot Lips bloomed all year last year, and with very little extra effort from me. I just love it!!
And thrilled now that I learned I can propagate by layering!!

Did the same thing with a Rosemary for the same lady (they happen to reside in the same bed).

Oh, and FYI, my Hot Lips was allowed to just go every whichaway (LOL) and seemed to like that best.
It also was not needing as much water as I'd expected. Seems to be perfect for xeriscaping.
That may be why she & Rosemary got along so well ;-)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, it needs more sun here I think. It is moving to the front beds.

(Carole) Cleveland, TX(Zone 9a)

Ahh, yes. Salvias love the sun, I learned the hard way *smile*

I have some white cannas (guess they're white, I've never seen them bloom!) that don't seem to be growing well at ALL.... could I safely assume they need more sun than they're getting in my partial sun/shade bed?

Sheesh, I'm so jealous of all the blooms! Everything here set buds early...now they're just sitting there taunting me.lol

I especially love ZD over the door. My knees go weak at pink climbing roses :0)

And all the pretty iris blooming??? Mine are just sitting there...maybe I need earlier bloomers?
