Early Bloomers

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

I talk to my plants ... they say that it makes them happy !!
That's why I have all those blooms ... and you ain't !!

LOL you guys are so funny. Lulu, if it makes you feel any better, I have a gazillion irises and have seen TWO white blooms. That's it. Two. Count 'em. I don't really recall seeing the rest of them bloom last year, come to think of it.

Food for irises?? What am I missing??

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

How long have they been in the same bed? I could be that they are too crowded and need to be separated.

LoL..I think the plants are sick of my chatter...perhaps it's my tone ;0)

Thats always my first thought too, Josephine.
I don't do anything special for the iris. If they're lucky they *might get bonemeal at planting time. Other then that, if you have been as dry as we have been, it could slow them down too.
We have lots of the cemetery iris in the area, they have started to bloom, but their show is not as showy as in past years. i worry about all the wild flowers this year, it's going to rough on them.

Being a good southern girl from the bible belt. I say a blessing over what I plant or move.....and a thanks for all that does well. It works for me!

Yes, we went to Ennis yesterday and the bluebonnets around the I20 are were only a few inches tall and not very abundant. They say this has been the driest month of March in Texas history.

Iris like dry......they may need to be divided, they don't bloom well after 3 years of crowding........I use a very low nitrogen 1st number with as high 2nd and 3rd number as I can find in 50 lb bags at the farmer's co-op. The key to great iris is good soil to start with.

Wildflowers are tough. They can survive dormant for years. They have the best blooms when we have lots of rain the previous fall.

ohhhh i'm seeing more clearly now!! thank you, ladies!
i remember where i used to live, before i gardened, i didn't even know what they were and mowed them with the grass (i know--horrors!!)
when i figured it out, i moved them. but they DID bloom for me AFTER i moved them to a better location ~ less crowded.

ALSO, where mine are NOW, they probably have too RICH soil and are overwatered!!
doh! moving stuff around after work this week!!!

Yep, I am sure that is my problem too. I need to share some with other beds or gardeners. LOL!

DH went shopping for a new camera today. This Home Run rose was one of his first shots.

Glenna, tell the DH he did a great job!!

Cleburne, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I think it's going to make a big difference in our photos. He's been shopping for a long time with help from the DG camera experts. Still hasn't made a decision on which lens for birds but we're ready for blooms and butterflies.

Gainesville, TX

tell us about the camera he chose

Sorry I didn't answer sooner.

The camera is a Canon EOS Rebel T3i. It came packaged with Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm that is great for flowers and butterflies. Even I can get good shots with it. LOL. Now DH has got to make a decision on which lens to buy for birds, which was the real reason he started shopping for a new camera in the first place.

I bet someone on the bird forum or the photography forum would be able to suggest one.

Oh, yes, he's spent countless hours on the bird forum and that's how he made the decision on the camera. But when he got to the store, some choices were not available that he thought he'd have, so he decided to think about it a little longer before the bought the second lens.

I don't think this would be considered "early" now but my mock orange is blooming.

Mine isn't in full sun all day so is lagging behind....nice blooms!

Mine is just beginning to open.

Grrrr! I'm so frustrated that my camera broke! I have those mystery wildflowers blooming (the ones from the Dollar Spot at T-get). One looks like Coreopsis, one like a mini orchid, some that may just be weeds without flowers! I ordered a Nikon on Amazon and will use a disposable until it comes. Then, pictures! AND I'll have some Fuchsias blooming by then (I hope). Janet
