We live in Opelika, AL - Zone 8. In the next 2 weeks, I am tearing out the overgrown and out of control boxwoods and holly in front of our house.
I'm planning on creating an actual bed with edging and planting knockout roses in the back of the bed against the house. I would like some additional greenery and color in front of the roses but have no idea what to plant that will be low maintenance and work well with the roses.
Any suggestions?
What can/should I plant along w/ knockout roses?
Here are a few suggestions for you.

Will you want something for winter interest as well?
If so, you might consider having an evergreen shrub in the back also. Rhododendron, azalea, gardenia, camellia, something like that depending on the amount of sun you get there....
I planted standard roses in front of the house and added lavender plants in front. Apart from looking good the lavender keeps the aphids off the roses as they don't like the strong perfume of the lavender.
