Wow I just saw this sad story about Bald Eagles in Western Canada.

Beautiful robins & waxwings duc!!

OMG...that is really awful about the eagles!! :(

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

I hated to read that story Pelle. It's so sad to think they're starving to death.

I got a couple of new suet cakes from Wal-Marts, a friend brought me 2 Woodpecker Suet cakes. Also a big bag of wild bird food. So when the cake is gone that is in there now, I will see just how much they like that. I wanted the Hot Pepper but that is kind of hard to get unless you go there yourself. But at least the friend we told last night was enough of a friend to look for the special cakes. It has peanuts, sunflower seeds, almonds. and some other things. We will see how things work out, still don't have the Northern Flicker back, I don't know how to get him or her back. Any advice would be appriciated.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

teddy, most oftenly I see Northern Flickers forage on open ground for insects. Having one visits a feeder must be an exception and not a rule. As long as I've watched my backyard birds. NFs had never came to my feeders. Most recently I've seen them came to this oak tree on the backyard twice. Redbellied also are seen on the same tree more often.

This morning I saw this male Northern Flicker;

Lily, great photos of your heron, flicker and gulls.

Teddy, I hope your wps will continue to visit your feeder.

The snow turned to a mixture of hail, sleet and rain yesterday and this poor California Towhee was looking like it was ready for spring as much as I am.

Love seeing your Anna's duc!

Looks real pretty in Alabama...nice one of the gulls, Lily!

Some years the Flickers come pretty regular some times not during the winter. As the weather warms up watch and see if they come to your yard and look for bugs to eat. That is when I see them the most too.

Congrats Duc for the half dozen Anna hummingbirds! Whoa! That means your nectar feeders are being hung there? I'm getting ready down here for the Redthroated hbs. Can't hardly wait for their arrival. I regcon you don't often get snow there in winter? I saw that San Francisco is getting snow for the first time since 1976? How far are you from San Fran.? The snow really showed off the Robins.

Thanks all for the compliment, Alabama is a beautiful State Nan hope you can visit us sometimes.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Duc I am very envious of your Hummers and gorgeous pics! Those Robins in the snow are sure pretty!!

Lily...I too am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Ruby-throated...it will be awhile before they arrive here though. I'm sure you will be one of the first to see them and I will be jealous of you also!!

Teddy...it took 3 years for the Flickers to eat in our back yard...we now have 2 females and 1 male. Yesterday I was heartsick when one of the females
showed up injured. She was here this morning and eating up a storm so I hope she recovers.

We had rain a few days ago and the Goldfinch lined up on the windowsill and were peaking in the window....LOL!

Forgot to thank you Resin for the new thread!!

Yesterday I saw a White Pelican on the neighbors farm pond...that was a real surprise. Also DH was going through some old photos and found a shot of a swan taken on our farm pond across the road. I will have to be more observant of what is going on around here!!

I have been listening for the Eastern Towhees and haven't heard them yet so I was very surprised to see this one at the brush pile yesterday.

Here is the Swan photo that I scanned! It looks like it was taken this time of the year so I will be watching!!

Lily, we normally get a few inches of snow, but it melts pretty fast in the lower elevations. We're about 150 miles north of San Francisco. Here's a picture of Mt. Konocti from our back deck.

Rose, I feel so bad for your little injured flicker. I do hope she'll get better soon-please update us if you see her. Your photo of the goldfinch looking in is priceless! Cute towhee too! Hope you get more pics of the swan.

I too feel terrible for the little Flicker. If she's eating well, a good sign that she'll recover soon. I hope, I hope. Thank you Rose for re-orienting me to the Rubythroated, I just had a sometimer moment there (you know, some time I remember, sometime I don't). :) Love your other pictures too Rose.

Duc, what a breath-taking view of the Mountain!

This morning my Redbellied wps came in as a twosomes. For the first time this winter. Both male and the female too. But tried as I might, I couldn't get them together in one shot.

Gorgeous view Duc!

Lily those are great shots of your WP's...you are doing very well with your new camera! I am watching to see if the Red-head shows up again this year. You are most fortunate to have them year around...with that beautiful background!!

The female Flicker showed up again to eat suet. She stayed for quite awhile and I am sad to say that it looks like she will lose the eyesight in one eye. That does not speak well for her survival and I hope I am wrong. :o(

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Thanks everyone for the great photos. It is still winter here. Was 3 degrees above zero yesterday morning, and got up to 15 degrees--warmest part of day, and sunny. this morning woke up to 8 degrees and warmed up to 11. there is still snow on the ground, and cloudy. Not many birds. Did see a couple of robins in the yard a week ago.

I am still waiting for the doctor to to the revision hip joint surgery on my left leg. At least there is finally, after 5 months of waiting. a scheduled date, March 14 for my surgery. The hosp. where I am having the surgery is about 6 hours from here. My son will come and get me March 9, to go Dr. and Hosp. pre-surgery appointments. Since I live so far away from hospital the doctor says I have to stay in the area for at least 2 weeks after the surgery. So I will be away from home about a month, Way too long this time of year.

Will miss my birds and early flowers.

Donna

Oh Rose that is so sad about your flicker.

Our Pileateds have been coming in together a lot lately! Took this just a bit ago....

Looks more like a white farm goose to me - high rear end, all-orange bill, and not so very much larger than the Mallards.

Best of luck to you Donna...hope everything goes well with the surgery and you can get back home to enjoy the spring!

Oh Nanny...I am so very jealous!!

Well phooey Resin....oh well...at least I found out what those ducks were...LOL!!

So many great shots on this thread!

Rose I'm so sorry about your female Northern Flicker. The Goldfinch at the window is adorable and the Towhee is gorgeous!!

Lily, Nice shots of your woodpeckers! I would love to have a Red-headed!

Nanny, Your definitely the queen with those Pileateds!

Red, Nice shots! Good to see the male Bluebird guarding.

agedgardener, Good pic of your Starlings finding a warm spot!

***We might have to let this thread run a little longer as 2dCousinDave will not be able to start it till tomorrow. ***

I would be happy enough if ONE Pileated wp came to my feeder much less two! I would not know what to do with myself! I would be so full of myself, my hubby would probably get irritated at me. Do you think since I got the new wp suet cakes, the pl wp might come down for a taste? I don't think I want to put up another suet cake feeder, the squirrels don't pay attention to this one, but if I got another one, I would have to put on the tree, and would have to try to keep the squirrels and RACCOONS out of it. The Hot Pepper might work with the squirrels, but the raccoons would eat it in a flash!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Awww Nan, how about send me one of your Peleated wp, then in turn I'll send Pelle one of my Redheaded. lol. I can't wait to post this pix. My very first Bald Eagle pix, woooohooooo!!! To top that off, I saw there are two eaglets in the nest this evening.

Rose thanks, my old Lumix did not give me this capability of zoom. But look!

That must of been quite something to see, Lily. Congratulation on the new family and your first pic of the Eagle.
Teddy, glad your seeing so much activity at your new feeder. If you saw one Pileated WP in your neighborhood, it's highly possible you'll see it at the feeder, one of these days.
Agedgardener, I heard on the news, you have received the most snow of this nasty storm, that just went through. It's no wonder those Starlings were looking for a place to stay warm. Great catch.
It's good to see the Bluebird standing guard. Hope he has a successful nesting.
Nanny, that must mean, they are close to nesting, great shots of them together.
Donna, wishing you well with the operation, I'll be thinking of you.
Lovely view Duc, that would be a dream spot for me. (lac, mountain, trees and some flowers) Your little hummer is gorgeous.
Rose,I love your towhee, I do hope the Flicker doesn't loses that eye.

A Black-capped Chickadee, coming down.
