Plant Propagation part XXVIII based on my own experience

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Jnette, I have you down for many things. What you cannot use you can give to your Sister.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Thanks Sharon.

I don't think they would grow up here Katie, thanks.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Well you never know until you try.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

That's true Sharon, but I usually have enough seeds planted for tomatoes, peppers, petunias, geraniums, etc. and anything extra gets lost in the shuffle.

Morning to all. It is extremely cold here today and windy. I did not walk for long this morning. Barney was not anxious to squat with the wind blowing this strong and it is so cold. It is to go up to 30 deg. today. Wow, what a pretty day it could be if it were warmer.

Checked the Angel Wing Cane Begonia cuttings and they are ready to be planted in soil. Some have roots others are growing leaves. I love that plant. I would guess it would do well outside but not here. I cut it back each winter and it is beauitiful now. Takes very little time to care for it. I would like to have another but I do not know what to ask for. Someone gave me a cutting of this one and I do not even know what it is except I ask for an ID from the Begonia Society and they told me what it was.

I have about 10 of these going up for sale in a few months.

That is beautiful. I NEED one - or ten.

Hi Everyone!,
It sure turned cold here. It is supposed to go back up to the 50's today, but this morning was much colder than it has been. I won't be getting outside ( even if I could). My feet are getting better, but I am still sore and I hate crutches! I am tired of sitting and feeling out of it because of the pain killers. I think I will try to make some jewelry today. I also need get some trays filled, so that I can seed them indoors and my son can move them out. ( I am hoping he wants money today! LOL) I really want to start some seeds, but it may have to wait.
Not too much going on, so I won't moan and whine anymore for the day, ( maybe). Hope everyone has a great day. Linda

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

That is beautiful JB. I think I got tired of the same old Angel Wing begonia I used to have. I had one in a coal scuttle years ago, it was about 4 feet tall and almost as wide 'cause I kept breaking it back and sticking them in the soil. But that thing just bloomed and bloomed. Guess it really liked where it was.

But it was just the shape of a wing with no character. LOL

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

LOL, we crossposted Linda. I am so sorry you hurt so bad. Wow, think I need to send you guys some of my good meds. LOL but then they would grab me for it.

Think I won't.

Make some jewelry today Linda. You won't have to walk (move) around.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Just got back from town. Man it is cold. I had to make a deposit for the Horse Park and pick up some more of the mad medicine (toprol). LOL $3.00 co pay. Cheapest med I take other than Xanax. That is also $3.00. God Bless the USA and my Marine Corp ID.

I also got $17 worth of lottery scratch off tickets. I won on the one I picked up the other day and of course, I do not keep my winnings, I spend them so I am going to scratch my cards today and see how my luck holds out. I started with one two dollar card and now I have 5 cards. Yahoo! I hope my luck is with me tomorrow when they do those tests. I really am not concerned about the tests, I am concerned about the results. I feel so good, and I have no discomfort of any kind except arthritis, I know if they keep looking they will find something that will make an invalid out of me. Doctors!

Oh well, back to the begonia. I bought about $100 worth of begonias last year. I have two left. This Angel Wing has never bloomed for me. I have no idea why but it has not. It grows like a weed, but no flowers. Any idea why? I did read something about Canes not blooming very much, so maybe I have one like that.
Katie, I can not ship to Mexico. My permit does not allow shipping out of the USA unless I get reinspected for each shipment. No way can I afford that. Sorry Sweetie. I would love to share it with you but my State says NO WAY.

Time to feed the dogs their lunch. Talk later. Stay warm. Show us pictures of your jewelry Linda. I never tried that . Did any of you ever do needlefelting? I did lots of that until I hurt my arm,. then I was unable to do much and just gave up and put all the away. You start with a piece of wool and form it into whatever you want to by jabbing it with needles. I just loved doing it. I made birds, etc. In fact, I sold quite a few on eBay.

You know the Geko on TV? I took a picture of him and made one of him. Also made this one for my grandson to put into his lolly pop package....this was Lolly, the Lizard.

Thumbnail by JBerger
Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

The bluebird sold on eBay . This would have been a great winter to work on these, but, my arm just will not hold up to all the action you need to do when you start to make one.

Should clean out drawers today but I do not feel like it. So, back to scratching lotto tickets. LOL JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, What do you do, prick the felt with the needle and pull the fibers up out of it? My daughter has done some knit felting. Where she knits a piece and then washes it in hot water several times to make the felt and then makes a tote out of it.

I told her that was too much work to make a piece of felt. But it is real soft. 'course now they have washable wool yarn that she loves to work with and it won't felt.

Wonder why your begonia won't bloom. I have never heard of one of those cane begonias not blooming. 'course you probably treat it badly.

Yep, we have a beautiful day going. Bright sun, blue skies, and suppose to be almost 40 degrees.

Had 2 coyotes in here a few minutes ago. Just drives my big dog wild. But she looks just like them except for the shape of her head. It was a mama and her young son. She peed out there, I suppose leaving her mark, and he tried to where she had, but didn't know how to lift his leg out there where there was no tree or whatever to pee against. Maybe he thinks it holds him up. LOL

mulege, Mexico

JB, I travel to Ca. every few months and often get plants when I'm there so I think we'll be able to work it out.

Amiga made it through the night. She is up and walking around and she finally peed late this morning. She is eating the food I made. Dana and I had a good visit and I've arranged to buy an TRV from them. Dana and I are both accepting responsibility for the attack on Amiga and, even better, are both working on what we can do to prevent another such problem. Tom was not involved in our talk.

I'm working in my plant room again today. It's kind of funny - one of the things Dana said today is that she thinks I have the right idea and she is becoming more of a hermit. Amiga came and lay down between us - but closer to me. ha. I may have occasional problems with people but dogs and I are fine. We caught a TV show where Mat Laurer had a dog who understands a lot of words. Didn't surprise me.

Back to the garden room.

Linda. please dmail me your address so I can get the dragon fruit cuttings ready to go. Anyone else want anything besides some of our spring weather?

hugs, katie

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

I just posted and sent a picture and poof.....it is gone, I have no idea where it went or why?

I was telling you that doing the needle felting is very dangerous if you do not pay attention. The needles are nasty and very sharp with little pricks on them that are like the ones on fish hooks only smaller. There are several kinds of needles depending on what you are doing. You just keep making and up and down motion on the wool and turning it and working with it until you get what you want. I really enjoyed it.

The angel wing is treated kindly so it is. If anything, I ignore it. I do not think it gets enough sun.

Those critters that come into your yard must know you are a nature lover. I would s*** it one came into my yard. I hate them. They are moving them around here in NJ and they are relocating them on the base in the woodlands/pinelands and we are not that far from there. So far I have not seen any but people tell me their cats are disappearing and they think it may be coyotes. I think I mentioned that before on this forum.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

I agree. It probably is the coyotes taking the cats. They are bringing wolves in here so they have one more animal to sell hunting licenses for. They already do in Idaho. They probably kill them with no license in Montana. huh lee?

Have you heard of the 3 esses? Shoot, shovel, and shutup.

Katie, what is a TRV?

mulege, Mexico

Sorry, ATV. All terrain vehicle. kb

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Ok. Thought it was something I hadn't heard of and might need one. LOL

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Quote from Jnette :
I would have split the order with you Evelyn, 2 Magic Bullets for $100 but they wanted 50% S & H!! Yeah, $47.99!!

Jeanette ~ A gourmet kitchen gadgets store in Folsom had them for $49.99 and you did not have to pay shipping. Yes, they (Homeland Housewares) do ding you on the shipping fee. They should just tell you up front what the charges are, as you have to pry it out of them. I probably won't be buying any since the blender works, even though not quite as efficiently, it will probably last longer. Maybe you should look around in your area. (When the weather is nicer...)The shop I saw it in was in a discount outlet mall.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Very interesting. Who was it, Linda, that mentioned it in the first place here? I wonder how long she has had hers. Maybe if it was, or whoever, will say. They looked very interesting, however, I can see the blades may not hold up long.

Sierra Foothills, CA(Zone 8a)

Jeanette ~ The blades are virtually indestructible. It was the plastic gears that wore out, as it runs on a very fast RPM. No selections of speeds like on regular blenders. I used it every single day at least once in the morning for making smoothies. I use the blender at a slower speed for a little bit longer. I am thinking it will not wear out so quickly if I do that. Still it is an Oster, so a good quality. I don't think Steve ever used it as he has his mixer on a stand and Cuisinart food processor. I never used those things before, but I do on occasion now.

Miles City, MT(Zone 3b)

The 3ssss are what work around here, but they do have a hunt season I guess. Wouldn't catch me doing it. I would be out there with scarey noises just to keep them from killing them. Now, I am not a tree hugger, however, I think they should give the cyote and wlfs a chance, let them shoot back!!! I don't like prarie dogs either, but I would not shoot them like they do here. Sport, they say. I say B#^S@%^*).
I believe everything should be survival of the fittest. Don't kill them unless they have a chance to do the same to you.
Soap box ended.
I am having computer trouble the last few days, so in to the puter Dr. tomorrow. I am sure they will keep it for a few days and after a large bill later, I will be back on line. Any ideas of a good laptop anyone? This desktop may be toast before it is all better. And don't say Apple. I have too many programs to switch from Windows.
Later all, Lee

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Jeanette you might look into the notebooks they are smaller and have fewer feature but work for getting online email and stuff like that. I am considering getting one myself but it might be a while.

Cane begonia's don't bloom much and when they dop its not much to see. I am not sure what the key is to getting them to bloom but I will look into itlater this week.
begonia's are another one of those plants that can be propagated by leaf cutting as well as stem. Its like doing african violets. the key to leaf cuttings is to have veins to root from. I will try to do a complete discussion on leaf cuttings since we have chatted about it a little.

well we did not get hit as hard as i had hoped. we got right at 5" of snow. its funny how the snow lasted last night. one small town got a bit over 5" of snow and another little town 15 miles away got 25"..... well its official we have broken all but the record for the most snow in a year. Most snow in a day... most snow for a month daily records and most snow in a single season. I am so ready for this to all be gone... and the forcast for friday is in the mid 50's

well I have flats ready for the cuttings next week's URC's of mahogany ajuga.

well not much to add more tomorrow
stay dry and warm

I purchased a White Sony notebook for $900. I loved it, Bought a case, mouse, everything to match and I had Verizon wireless and IT WOULD NOT WORK UNLESS I WAS HOME. That was not the purpose. I told my daughter she could have it if she could get it to work on the wireless. She took it to Verizon and they sold her an "air card" and she takes it everywhere and loves it.
Just be sure you will have a wireless connection that will work before you pay the money to get the notebook. I have no idea what the problem was. If I was close to the router it would work, but to take it away with me, which was the idea, to the doctor, etc. it could not find a connection. Just my luck.
I will be happy when the snow melts and the mud dries up. See you later. I must get the cleaning lady going and today I have my Echo and CT scan. Pray for me please. JB

mulege, Mexico

You'll be in my prayers with Amiga, JB.

I wore myself out in the plant room yesterday but got a lot of the acculated plant stuff, AKA junk, organized or tossed and am close to having lots of space to start seeds. I potted up my coral trees and got all the adeniums in fresh perlite Also have the epis moved around so they aren't taking up so much space.

I think every one of the 100 seeds in the golden berry packet germinated. They aren't ready to be pricked out, just sitting on a heating pad with a lamp over them and gradually getting bigger. It's funny - I was reading about them in the plant files and it said they can be a "noxious weed." They are one of the "superfoods" currently being touted. Who was it that saaid "a weed is just a plant who uses we haven't discovered"?

It's chilly this morning. All the dogs decided to sleep with me last night and me plus four dogs in a twin bed doesn't leave a lot of extra room. Kind of like a living jigsaw puzzle.

Think I'll do some clean-up in the sewing room while I finsih waking up and waiting for it to warm up a bit before I get back to the plants.

I slept pretty well. I'm very relieved that Amiga is recoverin well so far.

hugs, katie

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Well, my grandson bought a notebook and really likes it too. He has everything else but his mom has a laptop so he skipped that and went to the notebook. I don't know that I would like the small one. My fingers are too clumsy.

However, yes, I think if you want to take them places without wi fi hookup you have to have an air card. I only think this because my sister does that with hers.

JB, your tests are going to be fine. The results that is. I just hate taking the time to do them. I never did hear an opinion of the cardiologist that I didn't wait to see. Maybe since I left without seeing him he isn't going to give his opinion. And if he does, maybe it won't be repeatable.

Thanks for the rundown on the Magic Bullet Evelyn. I guess I'll stick to my blender.

Dave CNN gives all the info on Tulsa's record breaking storms too. You can have them.

Katie, there is no way I would have those animals on my bed. I can hardly stand to have the cat take up a little corner of the foot of the bed and mine is a double, not a twin.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Hey guys, I am back from the Hospital and here is what happened. So typical of me. I am such a mess.
Fasted from 9:30 a.m. and arrived at the Hospital for first test about 1:20. The first was a lab test at 1:30 P.M and that went well.
I then had to go to the Echocadiogram room and they were running about 1/2 hour late so about 2:30 I went in for that. That took almost an hour and it was not bad. Then they took me to the CT Scan Dept. and I was due there at 3P.M. but never got there until 3:30. Waited another half hour, which really pissed me off because now I am getting hungry. They took me in around 4PM and put the IV in and got me ready. We went into the CT Scan machine and it was an open donut type which is about five feet long and open on both ends. I thought maybe I could do it and I had taken three Xanax since morning so i was relaxed so I thought. Well, I laid down, put my arms above my head and was ready for them to put the contrast in my IV, when I realzied they were talking very quietly behind me. I said. Hey, if you are talking about me, speak up I want to know what the problem it. They then told me my BP was too high and they could not do the test and get an accurate picture. I needed to be given a med to lower my BP and that would take another hour.No guarantee it would work then. I sat up, got off the table and told them to shut itoff. I am out of here for the day. I am tired, hungry and obviously having an anxiety attack because of the claustrophobic problem. I have no idea what happened but that is the only thing I can think of.

Anyhow, two out of three aint bad and Now I must reschedule and take the new medicine to keep the BP low enough to do the test. I am so pissed I could scream. I am also exhausted. My BP os now 116/76......They said they want the lower number to be 60 when they do the test. My BP is never that low unless it is first thing in the AM when I get out of bed. So, I am going to lay down. We brought chinese home becasue we were tired and hungry and my daughter has a miserable cold, so this will be an early bedtime tonight.

The nurses did not believe me when I told them I did not like closed in places. I guess they found out I was not kidding. Worst part of the whole thing is that I had no control over it. I hate not being in control. Anyhow, I will talk tomorrow. Love you all and thanks for your prayers and concern. JB

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

JB, you need to talk to your dr. My God I would never be able to do that test. My bp is never that low unless I am dead. I can't believe it. I would not let them give me meds to get mine that low.

Now, having said that, I do know your bp runs lower than mine. Mine is good at 80 on the bottom.

And, how dare they talk low in the same room as you!! I had 2 nurses talking like that down under my bed one time when I was just waking up from surgery. I said "are you ladies trying to say I have a problem?" They jumped up so fast they kicked the urine bag, which they were emptying, clear across the room. Apparently a new nurse didn't empty the bag soon enough and it was running over already and the other nurse was telling her about it.

Guess that cardiologist I waited so long to see and finally left 2 weeks ago, isn't going to give his opinion of my problem. I called the clinic and they said they hadn't gotten it.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

They want you near death apparently with a diastolic bp that low. Now you can freeze your butt off at the hospital even more.

I am having an arthragram on my shoulder on Tuesday. I don't want to be off my job so I don't know what I am going to do. I really need my thumb fixed, so I should do both if I do surgery on one. The budget in CA is so bad that I may be out of a job once again. Laid off for the 3rd time since 2006, if it happens again.

I feel sorry for you Dave. Nowhere in our correspondence did I hear 30 below zero for tempuratures MR. Want to visit me? It is ugly but it was 50 about 3 hours ago.

Do any of you have any different varieties of MG, odd colors or variegated? Dianthus of any color, or Petunia seeds. I asked about them before but maybe someone else new has some, that they want to trade or SASE with me.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

JB, so glad you walked. BP bottom at 60 is crazy. You need to call your cardiologist and make sure these people know what they are doing.

Dawn, I have none of those. Sorry about your shoulder. California is Bankrupt. What is going on with your water problem.
We are so you are probably going to have a very warm weekend.

I finally got finished with the pantry. Going to get nails done tomorrow and am going to garden the majority of the day Saturday. House cleaners are coming on Saturday so I will have to be outside. If all goes well I should have everything ready to go in the mail next week.

Photo of clean and reorganized pantry.

I am tired so I will chat more tomorrow. Sharon.

One more thing JB, if I am going to have to fast and can't even have my coffee, I make sure my appt. is no later than 10 o'clock. Even if it is in Spokane which is almost 2 hours away. I cannot believe fasting until after 1 o'clock. That is ridiculous. You need to take charge of your appointments since they don't know that you have had nothing to eat.

Bob made a banana cream pie this morning before I even got up. Just brought me a piece. It is sooooo good. Whipped cream on top.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Now that is a good man.

Dawn, sorry I was really tired last night. I do have old time hollyhocks. I should have some plants coming up.

Now that the pantry is done, I will go through my seeds to see what I have.

I got up early this morning to watch Egypt. Just wish I understood totally what this means for the United States. I have a very good friend from Persia. I need to call him.

Have a great day. Sharon.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

It will be interesting Sharon to see what that means for Egypt, let alone the U.S. How and who is going to run their country now? How do they get someone in a short time? etc. etc. Very interesting.

I'm sure it will affect all of those countries, like Iran, Jordan, Israel.

edited to add: We aren't suppose to be talking about this. Oh well.

afternoon:
well egypt willmost likely fall under the muslum taliban or at least thats the fears our leaders are having.

I grow a lot of different dianthus it just depends what you are looking for. carnation's, pinks, or plain ole dianthus. there are a lot of new varieties out and I just found a new source for someof the newer ones in plug form the only problem is you need to order 50 at a time with a 150 plug min. I think I have some fringed pinks seed i can send to you let me look tomorrow.

I had my shot this am. and am just getting on to say hi....hi....

yes we had -30 and lower wind chills and I think we even got down to -6 one morning (befrore windchill) . we were having 20 to 40 mph winds with the last few blasts. we broke records that were about 90 years old. I truely feel we run in cycles and every 100 years the cycle starts over. we are headed into a cooler climate overall ... well I truely think thats what is happening.
but of course the world will end in december 2012 and they will have video of it on the 10pm news....

good news though we are getting upper 40's and 50's later this week. talk about the roller coaster ..... everyone get ready to raise your arms for the next down hill run. we have at least one more if not 2 more winter blasts coming. its just oklahoma's weather...up then down then up then down .....

Dawn what kind of dianthus are you looking for????

here is a pic of dianthus b. velvet and lace. i cant keep them in stock.... as fast i can grow them they fly out the door. I will look and see what i have left from last years seeds. I have been in a money crunch so i have not been able to get my seeds for 2011 as of yet.

I hope everyone is doing well. and having a blast of warmth from the sun. i am looking forward to tomorrow as its suposed to be nice out and i hope to work in the greenhouse.

Dave

ok blood pressure today mine was 158/104 yipeee.... its the pain and white coat fever.....

Hi everyone, all is o.k. Felt lousy today. Too much stress yesterday and stomach gave me some problems. Stayed in and rested most of the day.
Got an order for the Jasmine already. They are not even up for sale anyplace. Must a be an old customer. I will have to get my butt out in the greenhouse and be sure none of them die if that is the case. They are so popular.
Having problems with my tape backup again and the tech needs to come out Monday again. I am wondering about him sometimes. Oh well, I need the machine and the backup on tape is cheaper than having it done by someone else, so I need to get it fixed.
My CD/DVD jiggies are not working either. What causes that. He said the wires are inside the tower and he needs to check to see if they are o.k. Whatever.
See you all tomorrow. The weather is to be in the 60s by the end of next week. Can you imagine. Still 5 ft. of snow in the barnyard. Mud and snow I should say. Later gaters. JB

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

jb are we gettin jiggy wit it???
what kind of heater do you run in your GH????

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Good heavens I am going out on a limb to say, Shar, Jeanette, Katie and Evelyn and myself too, would not fair well in your weather. It would be a total shock to the system. Dave from what you say, you are in shock.
Dave I am looking for any variety of dianthus or Petunia seeds. I think some of my WS seedlings are not sure what to do. I have some that sprouted and don't know how they are doing. It has been dark when I get home. I need to move them out of the West sun.

Sharon I have HH coming out of my booty. Thanks though. They were taking over my yard for a while and killing all my small seedlings in their shade. I kind of had to control them this year, so far so good. I love them in the spring and Fall though. they look so crappy in the summer here. lol

JB rest and take it easy, be good to you, take a bubble bath and sit with a remote in hand.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Think this might be an end to a weird week. Weatherwise, healthwise, and otherwise. We all need to take our meds and relax.

Seems to be half and half. Sharon, Dawn, Lee, Evelyn and Katie, on the healthy end and the rest of us on the other end of the teeter totter. Hope they win!!

Good grief, I am starting to sound like Dave on his meds!!!

LOL, have a good weekend everybody.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

Yes I am starting to get my meds straightened out now.
I hope to get out and see how things are in the gh tomorrow. I have 8 flats of seeds starting to germinate.miscanthus sinses, muhly grass as well as a couple hundred pampas grass.I have to watch themclosely to make sure they didn't dry out. Oh well... its time to go back to bed as the room is starting to feel strange.

sweet dreams
Dave
