I am building a grow stand and we are going to use shop lights , I have had no trouble finding cool bulbs but cant find warm bulbs are they called or labled by another name? I have seen daylight bulbs are they the same thing as warm bulbs?
help , can't find warm bulbs for shop lights
http://www.google.com/search?q=warm+fluorescent+lights&hl=en&rlz=1T4GGLG_enUS312US312&prmd=ivns&source=univ&tbs=shop:1&tbo=u&ei=_yxGTZ-rLcXTgQeN_fSzAQ&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&ved=0CDUQrQQwAg
Keep asking locally until you find knowledgeable sales people. Home Depot, Lowe's, hardware stores should all stock them.
you're probably thinking of wide-spectrum. A good wide-spectrum fluorescent tube that will fit in most shop fixtures is the 48" T8 gro-lux tube. Available at most big-box home improvement stores. Of course, make sure this tube fits your fixture(s) first. For house plants, 2 48" tubes will provide a nice amount of light.
thanks for the info and as soon as the ice melts I will be heading to the store for t.hose bulbs
Look at the CCT rating of the lamp. That will tell you if it is cool or warm. See the following article for and explination of CCT.

Susan thanks for the info I went to the link and it was very helpfull. Tammy
I bought Sunlight Bulbs from 'Lowes', 2 for 6.99 they come in a T8. Then I found out my fixture was a T12, didn't work to good just kept blinking! Oh well I needed new fixture anyway. Don't buy from Gardeners Supply Co. they want 34.95 for three bulbs. :(
You are smart to make your own grow stand , they sell between 350. and 700.00!! I am pretty sure you can make one for about 150.00.

The 4'--Cool Light bulbs are what most people use. Just affix them on chains and "S" hooks
so you can raise and lower them as the seedlings grow. Keep the lights about 2" above
the seedlings at all times. Even though they are "cool"--they emit a low level of warmth
over the seedlings.
This does a really good job! You do not need special grow lights for seedlings.
"Critterologist" (Jill) has written several informative articles on this--as well as many other things.
Just click on her name--and go down her home page to "Articles she has written"....
I, myself, have only a 3' shelf light set up. Cost me 3x more than a 4' one.....
Here's a picture. This is in my BR by a bright window....I do not grow a large amount of seeds.
In the off-season--I still use the lights to grow cuttings of Coleus....
Why not? Might as well use it for some good purpose.....
Gitag, your Coleus are very pretty and so full. Virginiarose, my husband is just about finished with my grow stand and we bought bulbs this week end , I have to confess to you all I am a little concerned I may have bitten off moire than I can chew , oh well I am gonna give it my best shot.
You can do t better than $150 for a grow stand. I bought a set of metal shelves, about 6 feet tall, and installed fluorescent fixtures for each shelf. I've been starting my seeds for about 30 years this way and it works beautifully.
Gitigal and Playinindirt, You just gave me a good idea, I will move my location to bedroom not garage. I have a bright sunny window just like yours. I will buy metal shelves and maybe two lights. It shouldn't cost more than 60.00 depending on whats on sale. I'm so excited, now I finally have a game-plan, I can't wait to get my seeds started!! Thank You so much. :)

Having it in the bedroom also is better--as you can keep an eye on things
--like watering, seeing what has sprouted, catching a problem quickly, etc....
Having the set-up in your garage may be too much--

I really like the idea of getting my grow stand out of the garage . Having it in a bedrroom would be very handy ,plus my husband would rest a little easier because then I would not be invading his space and the garage would be all his and the boys again. I have a small room that gets the morning sun it is just off my kitchen so it would be handy to water them . Thanks for sharing your ideas .
