Size of pot for starting a seeds

I figure if I start indoors (early) and the seedlings are large enough the birds will leave them be. I got a few pods last year despite a late start - they are "sweet" when you eat the few from the garden (as in "grazing"). - it is all learning and all good just to grow.

HoneybeeNC,
Last season I conducted a deep rooting Emerald Giant Bell Peppers experiment, after researching some university experiments and their findings. Based on these, I took a calculated risk and potted up my BP seedlings halfway in 18 oz. Red Solo cups. I added potting mix to the cups as they grew taller.

I'm holding one of the seedlings in the intro pic on this thread. The bowl of ripe peppers in the Zone 8-9a Spr/Sum Veggie Growers thread is fruit from the BP seedlings.

I knew I could do this with tomatoes.

Gymgirl - thanks for the info. I didn't know you could add soil around the stems of sweet peppers. I assume they put out roots on these covered stems just like tomatoes. Very interesting!

Heheheh, we have another thread somewhere around here on whether peppers put out roots like tomatoes or not. Linda is gonna experiment this year and find out for sure. (Any idea where that thread is, GG?)

Plant tomato, pepper and other seeds in Jiffy 7 Plant Starters Extra Depth. Plant in garden 6 weeks for tomatoes, 8 weeks peppers. Dig planting holes with 2 3/4 " bulb auger in rechargeable drill. Works like a charm and never fails to give me healthy plants with lots of fruit every year!
