And my pear tree says thank you for immortalizing it....it is 100+ years right now, hollow, but still putting out the bosc pears! One year, flickers nested in the hollow trunk......

Sweeeeet

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

nice when a special bird nests in a tree - i noticed a flecker nesting in a bird house i built for fleckers just a few weeks ago - box had been up for a few years - interesting box - it is about 30" tall by 12" wide and the whole is 6" down from the top - they like a deep nest.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

The right nest design is important.
I hate the nests that look like country houses and have the hole where the front door should be.
There isnt a bird going that would choose a nest like that.Big holes bring sparrows .Holes too low will bring them too.
My chickadee and wren houses have the hole 6" from the bottom and the size of a quarter so bigger birds cant raid the nests.

I need computer info.
I use a laptop. There are only 2 USB ports.
They are both in use.
I have ordered a scanner and need a port for it
This is what I am thinking of:
http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-USB-Port-Power-Adapter/product-reviews/B00483WRZ6/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
Do I also need a cable or is the "Power Adapter" the same thing?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, you can use that hub if you expect to put a lot of accessories on your laptop. You will need the male to female USB cable which they advertise in the combo package as well. The power adapter is not the same thing, it powers the hub since it is a large 10 port unit and needs to be capable of providing sufficient power to all the ports.

* If however you will only be using two or three extra USB ports then you may want to look into this one which is the one I use as an extra hub, it also has a magnetic base as well as velcro and is much more economical. The USB cable comes already attached to this unit...

*The hub is attached to the computer by a cable and then the scanner is attached to the hub via another cable. The scanner may or may not come with It's own cable, you'll have to check the scanner specifications, or in this case wait until the scanner arrives to be able to tell.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Are cables available from any electronic store?

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Most of the most common ones are available at stores such as Best Buy or Target. However they usually don't have a wide selection of lengths for these cables and their stock is usually very limited. They also tend to significantly overcharge for the same cables which you can purchase from Amazon, 'Cables to Go' or NewEgg for much less.

Thanks for your help.

Are most of you guys celebrating Christmas Eve? We're just doing Christmas day.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

my family will go to my Aunts house on eve... I took a pass this year... doing all of our running around christmas day

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Mixed news on the family. Looks my sister is okay and the mammo results were faulty. However, today was my MIL's angiogram. She is very blocked on the right side and will be having a major bypass surgery on Monday. They will connect the lower abdominal aorta to her two femoral arteries. Very dicey in genera. More so with diabetes. Risk of heart attack or stroke, both during and after.

The area of her blockage points more to smoking than diabetes as the cause.

We will visit her tomorrow since she cannot come on Christmas.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh that's so sad... so sorry to hear that Victor... my dad is going though some stuff too... next wed they are going to do angiogram and hopefully a plast... if not he will need a bypass as well... and MIGHT need a hip replacement... AND sister might need surgery on her back... herniated disk... fam is falling apart this year

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thank God the results were faulty and your sister is okay, Victor.

Maybe this hospital stay will have all positive effects for your MIL: I hope so!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Recovery is the toughest part of that kind of surgery, lots of liquid in the lungs and for a smoker that's not good.
- My father survived a quadruple bypass surgery only to be defeated by pneumonia during recovery 3 mos later, it was a very bad ordeal for him, at the end death was a 'gift'...

Best wishes for your MIL.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

DH always did Christmas eve, so that's what we do. Then just relax Christmas Day.

Wishing everyone healthy outcomes.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Gosh I hope all is well with every one's health this coming New Year! So sad to hear at this time of celebrating.

I have Christmas Eve dinner at my house for the boys and their wives and the grandgirls, we open gifts then eat. After dinner we light the luminaries and go to BILs for a while. Christmas day we will go to our younger son's house in the morning then with our older son to his In laws for dinner so we can be with the girlies. We will visit with my in-laws for a bit early afternoon. We will celebrate with my side the following Thursday with a dinner at my sisters and lots of relatives from out of town.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm sorry to hear about your MIL Victor, like Pirl said maybe time spent in the hospital will have a positive impact and i'll be praying things turn out well.
I am on the other hand, so happy to hear good news for your sister!! Merry Christmas!!!

Now i'll give an update on Karen, she has been moved from CCU to ICU, no breathing tube, feeding tube ...yes. She has not been able to swallow on her own and they are not sure if it is because of damage done by the stroke or if it's the high doses of pain meds they have her on. They started reducing the pain meds in hopes to get an answer to this question. The MRI and CAT scan she had yesterday showed that the swelling is going down nicely ,that was a wonderful piece of Christmas news!! :) If she continues on this path, they will move her from Portland to Waterville hospital next Wed. so they can begin her therapy.
Portland is in the Southern part of the state and were DD Tarsha lives. This proved very handy as Amy and her family could stay with Tarsha while Karen was there. Now Waterville is only 15 minuts from me and 35 minutes for Amy to drive to see her Mother. Easier on Amy and family up this way and Tarsha just stays with me or Amy so she can be close by . Things are looking up!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks for the update, Celeste. Christmas miracles are so heart warming. I'm so happy for Karen and her family.

Thomaston, CT

Prayers for your MIL, Victor....good news on Sis & Karen! Hope & pray things go well with your Dad, Allison! Doug & I always had a quiet Christmas Eve, then church at 10:00pm.....will stick to the same. My stepson & his wife will be staying with me. Tomorrow morn, we will go to the farm for breakfast & opening of the gifts, then on to the Mayflower for 1:00, & more opening of gifts...dinner at 2, home around 5 to feed the mutts.....

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

went to church Christmas eve. Have done so since I was 9. Open presents Christmas day. IrisMA called after she opened hers, she got the package I sent yesterday.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Merry Christmas, everyone! We had a nice time here. Hope you all did too.

Congrats on the new granddaughter, Bill!

On the poisoning of the food plot by terrorists, I'm sure they enlisted my SIL!

LOL! D-nut, over the sleeping, grumpy tree!

Victor, there are seven states with no state income tax: Alaska, Texas, Nevada, South Dakota, Washington and Wyoming. Only 2 of them (Texas and Nevada) are warmer, and then only in certain parts of the state. Two other states, New Hampshire and Tennessee, tax only dividend and interest income.

LOL! Loved the senior codes, Jen!

Congrats on selling the painting, Jo! Nice! I like that painting myself.

OMG, Jo, that how to wrap a cat video was the cutest thing! I can just see my sister's cat getting wrapped up like that. LOL!

Celeste, nice to hear Karen is doing well and recovering.

Victor, sorry to hear your MIL is not doing well. Here's hoping things will improve for her.

My brother is doing okay. He has no Christmas spirit this year, though, due to having been served the divorce papers and the accident and surgery on his hand. He came for dinner today, though, and it was nice to see him and his daughter. He did not have any Christmas spirit last year, either, due to how miserable his wife made him. I think it's a good thing they're getting divorced. He plans on not selling the house till after the divorce in final. He will continue to live at the house with her till it sells. They are going for shared custody of their daughter.

Karen

Here's my brother today.

Don't know how I lost this thread, but I've finally caught up and I'm so sorry to hear all the stressful news re: your MIL, Victor, and your brother, Karen. I sure hope things turn out well for all! So tough at Christmas to have these types of stress. Prayers for all, and I hope the surgery goes well on Monday, Victor!

Celeste - I'm just thrilled to hear that many prayers have been answered for Karen and that she is awake and with her family today. She has a long road ahead, but just hearing about her first words about the breathing tube tell a lot about her resilience and attitude.

Bill - How awesome that you have a lovely little granddaughter! Congratulations. She is a true beauty, as is your daughter. Hank said to tell you that now that you are a grandparent you will need that little picky-uppy tool for horseshoes. LOL

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Louise. Glad to hear you found us again.

Karen

Karen - I noted that the census showed migration to LOW tax states, not no-tax.
