someone needs to post a picture of the Blue Eranthemum Sage, or did you already>?
Rachel, did you send this split leaf philo to me? Gee, at first it had a split leaf, and then I moved it outside this summer, and that split leaf went away. This is only a temporary home for it, until I find a Nice pot with a pole for it to climb. It seems to like where it is at for the moment.
Tropical Garden # 85
One more post... I really, really like all the plants everyone has posted. I feel like a greedy little thing when I see something I would like to have,( which is almost everything) and the things I have received from all of you already I am so very grateful for.
I only hope I can someday re-pay everyone back with something from my little part of Kansas, that you all would like.
Some nice lady named Dollie sent me this, I think. It is a sanseveria, but a solid round pointy thing. It came as just a cut off pointy thing, and then I had two, I cut one off and sent it to someone ( can't remember who) and then got these babies. Now in this pot is also a clump of purple Wandering Jew ( from rita) and a fully grown already finished blooming Dola brug. Soon, I am going to break this little family up, Dola is going to another Brug Lover in Texas.
He is being really patient with me. I admire him for that....
Anyway, MJ, I just know your plants will just wake up this spring and go gung ho, and Lin if you need any thing you see me post, let me know..
Nicole, I have some special seeds for you...
Kay, so good to see you here too.. and Rachel, your plants are always so very lovely.
Rita, I am betting the Chalice vine cutting I took from the first vine you sent me, blooms before the first one does. It rooted quickly.
Hi All,
Debra, I have the White Sky Vine ( Thunbergia grandiflora alba) rooted for both you and Rita. Just waiting for them to grow a bit and I'm sure they are well established before I send. It can be a bit more persnickety than it's blue sister. The one you mention in the pot above with your ROS doesn't look like Thunbergia. It looks like a Shrimp plant to me, maybe the Pink or White? or Red or Fruit Cocktail ? LOL...I've got I think 5 different kinds. May have to wait till it blooms to see. I did send you some of the Bow Tie vine cuttings, how did they do for you ? Oh the little caudex you sent me is getting a leaf ! It's under the grow light's and keeping it on the dry side like you said. Oh I know everything will be fine it spring, it's just that so much is "winter blooming" like the Blue Eranthemum Sage. I'll post a pic from last year. I didn't get a good look at the Ti Plants yesterday that are in the ground, they are back under the tree's and some things that had a lot of tree cover did a bit better. I'll try to check today. Had two horses go out and probably another coming in Friday or Saturday for 3 weeks. A little Welsh Pony Stallion that I'll work with while his owners go back to Canada for the holidays. I had said I "wasn't " going to take horses in training this winter, but I've worked with this little guy and his owner alot and he's a blast. Burrr, Canada, too cold for me. We are supposed to have a warm up and then cool down again. This is the time of year when I threaten to move further south !
Martha, let's move to the Keys - I'm freezing!!!! I want a white sky vine, too - will you root one for me, please? I had one and it died.
Kay I have a few more pieces sitting in a bucket of water that I snagged off the vine before this frost. I'm going to trim them up and get them in vermiculite. they take alot longer this time of year. Both will come back in the spring, ( or should....) so if these don't stick I'll do more in early summer.
Thanks - you are such a sweetie!!!
Whine, whine!!! It is so cold here!! I'm sorry, I know you northerners have it so much worse than we do. It has been in the 20s at night all week and no higher than the 50 during the day. They say we MIGHT make it to 60 Saturday, but then all next week low 20s again with high 40s.What is the deal? Ok sorry, I feel better now.
I have lost a couple plants also, but that is mostly because I never got around to getting them in mostly because of the container. I think most will come back.
MJ, I would like the white sky vine also, please, whenever.
I'm like Debra, feel so bad about always wanting what others have, but we did conclude it was an addition, right? Maybe in the next few days, I will make a list of some things I have and will post here or send to you guys and if you want them I can send them in the spring. I love to grow cuttings of anything.
Paula, I was thinking that same thing - we can post what we lost (around the first of April) and if anyone has something we need, we can either trade or do postage.
I have microclimate spots in my yard, where the foliage dies back, but comes back in the spring or before. I have lilys up all over my yard - the foliage will get nipped, for sure, but they will 'do their thing' in March!
I'm lucky that I live in close proximity to the ocean, so we don't get such concentrated cold as those who live inland do - we get the moist heat from the warm waters.
Kay: I agree, you are lucky that you live on the Gulf of Mexico side of the state ... much warmer than the Atlantic side!
Thanks Lin!
The Hoya is from wild plants that are said to be Hoya carnosa.
It's very possible that the wild plants in Hawai'i are Hoya australis as they do look like your plant.
Dave: I haven't detected much fragrance on my carnosa's but H. australis has extremely fragrant flowers in the evening and at night!
Hi Lin,
I've been looking at a Hoya Key and see that the pink under the corona of the flower is typical of Hoya australis.
It does look like these plants.

Thanks for the ID!
Mahalo nui loa, Dave
Dave, you are welcome. There are a few photo's of H. australis in Plant Files as well: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54435/
There are a number of H. australis', and I always get them confused. I think the flowers are pretty much alike on all the australis. I have a little plant I rec'd in trade a few years ago labeled as H. australis keysii: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57680/ but I've been told it's not keysii. It's been a very slow grower, nothing like ssp. australis which grows like gangbusters!
If you scroll down this page, Christina (MyHoyas here on DG) has photo's of a few different Hoya australis at her site: http://www.myhoyas.com/australis.htm
Hello Everyone!
Plantladylin, it is good to see you! The plant in the picture is a blue Lochroma.
Thanks for the name of Metrosideros Hoya, I am always lookng for more.
Your first picture of A Frydek is very clear.
RachelLF, that pepper plant is about 5 yrs. old and no peppercorns as yet. I will definitely start one for you and promise that the next variegated rosary vine I find is yours.
That is another new plant, you sure know how to pick them.
I have these little bitty hoya blooming now, but the fragrance will knock your socks off!
mjsponies, too sad about your toasted foliage, especialy when you waited all summer only to lose them in one night.
I will mail you cuttings of the blue lochroma and try to root some here, we might get lucky.
I wonder how long it will take my 4" pots of rosary vine to get as full and pretty as yours.
Sorry to hear about your Blue Sage as well, they are so very pretty. Rj shared his with me a couple of years ago. I will always have it in my garden.
GAgirl1066, I hope that you took in my two favorite Philos.
I mailed a package of cuttings on Tuesday, but forgot to tag them. You can just d-mail if you need any help with identifying them.
Metrosideros, that is the perfect lime , thornless and no seeds.
KayJones, It is good to see everyone in the Gardening spirit again!!
Joeswife, I have a few of those cute little A sting-Rays from Rachel as well.
I have recieved so much from you already, please do not hesitate if you see anything that you would like a start of.
Before you cut your Chalice vine check for buds, I found a few today!
My chalice vine died IN THE GREENHOUSE last winter - just too cold at 50 degrees, I guess!
Metro...only thing wrong with those limes....there's no MARGARITA!!!!
Lin, you have some very nice Hoya plants and yes, that is Syngonium wendlandii.
mjs, you are a very kind person and I am glad that the horse business is still keeping you busy and have fun working with the little Welsh again. He must have a very good temperament;-)
Dave the Lime's look quite tasty and Debra, I was not the one that sent you a split leaf philodendron plant but I do have a Monstera adansonii that is in need of being cut back. Let me know if you would like for me to start you one.
Rita, you are always way too kind and this gal does appreciate it. That bromeliad you posted a picture of is pretty and so is the bloom which looks like it's going to burst open very soon.
Oh those Hoyas are so interesting, I sure do hope mine blooms soon! It has these little splashes of colour on the leaves. Lin, I sure love the flowers on yours. I hope mine is the sweet smelling one. ( I am hoping it will bloom before Spring)
Kay, the stems of chalice vines I had to trim before I brought it in are all rooted. I will remember to send you one after Christmas.
Gosh I wonder if I can look back and see in my dmails who sent that split leaf Philo.
A nice lady named Dee sent me the stingrays, so cute!
Are Hoyas like bromliads? Do they need special anything? Mine is just now really rocking and rolling and I havn't done anything to it.
I have buds on the alba moon vine, and can't wait to show you those when they are blooming, down in my basement.
Rachel, anything that needs cutting back would be a real treat for me, and I would be thrilled to death to grow what ever you sent.
Someone also sent me some Black EEs, .They are now peeking up. Pink Princess Philo is also re-bounding from her move in from outside. I don't think she liked it out there this summer.
I have five Goji Berry starts fully rooted now. The main plant is in the closet with the stictocardia, and sure acts like a climbing shrub instead of a bush.
Debra, I'd like that - thanks!
Give that pink philo some shade next summer it will do great mine did but not the pink philo I dont have that one yet.............lol
James
Rita: Thanks for the ID on the Lochroma, it's really a beauty! Your little Hoya looks like H. nummularioides, the fragrance is really awesome on those little blooms! I had a nice sized hanging basket of that one three years ago and it took a turn to "unhappiness". The plant kicked the bucket, but luckily I remembered to take a stem cutting to root. It just seems to be a slow grower for me, it's still a small one stem plant but it had a bloom last month! Hoya nummularioides: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/57681/ and at MyHoyas/Christina's site: http://www.myhoyas.com/nummular-min.htm
Rachel: Thanks for the ID on your Syngonium wendlandii, a gorgeous plant!
Debra: Do you have a photo of your Hoya? I have Hoya pubicalyx that has splashes on the foliage and also Hoya carnosa. I am not a hoya expert though (I just began learning about them when I joined DG in 2006) so there might be many with splashes on the leaves! I tell ya, I've found some hoyas to be very patient when it comes to blooming ... it's me who is the impatient one! I have a hoya that I received as a single cutting in a 2007/2008 co-op here on DG and it took forever to put on growth, it's finally growing little peduncles (bloom spurs) but they are taking forever to get big enough for buds to form and I've so looked forward to the fragrant blooms. I had to move the plant inside because of our 30º nights this week so I hope it doesn't cause any adverse effects. I had buds on Hoya lacunosa that blasted and fell off when I moved it into the house, Grrrr ... but I don't think they would have been happy if I'd left them out in the cold either!
I hope that Everyone had a great day!!
DityGirl71, mmmmm Margaritas. I will second that one!!
RachelLF, thanks those Bromeliads were all discarded at a garden center. It took a few years for them to bloom again, but the foliage made up for it. Have you made your Christmas plant wish list yet? What is #1?
Joeswife, Glad to hear that your Pink Princess is on the mend, I find them way too finicky. Mine is old and not too pretty. I have yet to find the perfect spot for her. I know that she likes to be kept on the dry side, and out of the sun.
Pensacolagarden, we will have to do something about getting you a Philo. Pink Princess, as soon as mine perks up. Maybe in the spring.
Plantladylin, thanks! I will make a tag for my Hoya nummularioides. I was introduced to Hoyas a few years ago, like Brugs I think they are all very pretty. Right now I am looking for a Hoya Macgillivrayi.
That was a smart move saving a cutting from the your mother plant.

New thread #86
Going to the new thread....but,...Rita, I wanted to know what the above plant is?
