Welcome, Hall! Very nice!

I would love a greenhouse!

I would love a greenhouse, too!

Welcome, Hall! Newbies are much welcome here. Love all your plants. I bet they love all the humidity from the hot tub. Nice!

I love your orchid. I have 2 that have only bloomed once, and that what when I bought them. One is 2 years old, the other less than a year. I also have 2 young cymbidium orchids that I bought last winter from a seller on ebay. They are doing so well, and hope they will eventually bloom. The seller said they would take about 2 years to bloom, but I got a cheap price on them. I need to repot them. One has roots growing out the bottom of the pot and up the sides. I've read you can just attach them to wood and such, and don't have to pot them at all. I'm afraid of killing them, but maybe I'll try it with one and see how it goes.

nice Hallchinalady.... hello and welcome!!!

7 christmas cactus buds.

Yay, Iris!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have a mystery C. C. blooming too and im in hopes it's a peach one like IrisMa's!
I saved it last year off a clearence rack for 1.50 but no tag and no dead blooms to judge the color by. It has not bloomed since I got it, it's rather small so I didn't force it just let it grow. Guess it was the right thing to do as I have 8 buds in all and 3 - 4 of them have color. My guess is it will be soft pink, or peach......i've waited 10 months, guess I can wait a few more days. ^_^

The person who brought my cc to the iris auction is from Maine & she got it at a specialist place.

Central Pa, United States

I have quite a few Christmas cactus...some are a mix of white and peach...as when I rerooted them I got them mixed up...but just makes it even prettier.

Yes....the orchids do like the hot tub (as does hubby...can't keep him out of it)...as we're both getting older and it's our one luxury to ourselves.......

A bit about myself....I've been gardening for most of my life.....I worked in greenhouse for a few years so I'm no stranger to it, and have a bit of knowledge in this area. We have several gardens but not a lot on the flower side as I save my energy for the fundimentals...veggies. We have enough property to have a few acres planted in the spring. My husband says, every year, now we're not gonna have a truck patch!!!! And every year it just gets bigger (there's just the two of us anymore...kids all flew the coup). Just a little backround.
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.....

Well Dea, I do the same thing...grow a garden like there were 12 of us living in this house instead of 2-3. But it all pans out, the kids come over and get some, the neighbors love us and so do the food banks and soup kitchens. ^_^

Thomaston, CT

I'm alone now, & still am planning for my usual garden.....neighbors & family like to pick....I added more flowers this year, & I'm happy with that.

Norridgewock, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, I find the older I get, the more the veggies must give way to flowers.

Thomaston, CT

I've gotten very much into dahlias, so last summer, I planted around 30 of them....maybe more for this year!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Hall and Celeste, sound like you both have some pretty big veggie gardens. I grow very few veggies, and I don't do well with them. I do much better with my flowers. I grow mostly perennials, as annuals get pricey, and if you grow them from seed, then they're a lot of work. I do some impatiens, as I can usually find them for a good price. I would love to do a lot more annuals, as they really extend the season color-wise. Most of my perennials are done by late July. Only certain ones are still blooming in Aug. I do have some daylilies that bloom at that time, the later ones, but the majority have peak bloom in mid July. Of course this year they were all 2-3 weeks early. Kind of a bummer, as the season ended too early.

Marilyn, you just made me realize that I haven't dug my dahlias yet. Is it too late? The ground hasn't frozen yet.

Karen

Thomaston, CT

No....you can dig them as long as the ground is not frozen. I'm getting to love the annuals, like zinnia, poppy, calendula, cosmos...where you can just sprinkle the seed in the soil in late April.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Marilyn. Will get them dug tomorrow before the ground freezes. Temps getting really low here this week. I tried cosmos and zinnia a couple years ago, and rabbits ate them right up shortly after they sprouted. I was sooooooo mad!!!!!!!!

Hope put up lights today, and put some up yesterday. The ones I put up are the tiny blue ones. Sure are pretty, but I need at least 2 more strings to make it look nice. Would like even more than that. If I keep going, then we'll start looking like Allison's. LOL! Then we'll be in competition. Now we'll have to get something to synch the lights to music.

Karen

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

cool!!!!..... the more the merrier!!!!

Thomaston, CT

Oooh, sorry about the bunnies, Karen....my garden is fenced, so not a problem for me. Mice nibble on the tomatoes though.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL! I will be getting at least 2 or 3 strings of blue lights to finish up that tree, then that's it for me. My sister wants to get some more lights, too.

Well, I guess my dahlias are done for. I had no time for digging them today, and will be working way overtime this week, and then temps are gonna be waaaaay cold all week. We're getting frozen ground for sure.

The Christmas Cactus is finally starting to bloom. Not a soft peach like IrisMA but a beautiful salmon color that I think will look wonderful with the peach should I ever get one :)

Love it! Just a great color!

South Hamilton, MA

The 'peach 'has a tint of red this year but still lighter. Maybe watering schedule makes a difference.

Thanks Robin!
Maybe it does make a difference on watering Iris.

Such a lovely color Christmas cactus, Celeste!

No outdoor greenhouse here but an indoor (unheated) porch and a mini greenhouse.

Here are some photos:

This one shows the not-so-beautiful mini greenhouse and it is very useful.

There's the plant stand in front of the door, and the picnic bench covered with an old lace tablecloth. The plants enjoy the sunshine.

ooh, don't have windows like that.

Thomaston, CT

It's a beautiful, bright room....I like the mini greenhouse.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Lovely Pirl! I too have one of those mini G.H. and love it, the are very handy!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, everyone. I love the porch but in winter the sun can be so blinding that I have to keep my back to the windows.

Here's one more view. It's the door to the guest room where I have the computer.

The open door in the photo prior to this one leads to the master bedroom.

I'd really much rather have a screened in porch as I did long ago.

I do have a screened in porch....would rather have a sunroom! Or maybe both!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Both sounds ideal!

Love the color on the Christmas Cactus
Very pretty Pirl

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks. It's a small room but serves the purpose.

Gorgeous cactus bloom, Celeste!

Love your place, Pirl. You have very nice lighting there. I love the fancy plant stand. Would love to get one like that.

I would, too!

This is the first time I am overwintering EE's. Have them in my covered porch and they are loving it! The hot tub humidity is the key, I think.
