dinner will be at our home - very happy - we brine ours in salt water w/herbs from the garden. have one bucket that is only for brining.
Thanksgiving plans???
I would say you were organized, Bill!
Anyone decorate for Thanksgiving? Or do anything special with the table?
I have a few Thanksgiving things... I would like to get more. I try not to do anything on the table, need room for all the food.
I meant like place settings.
We break out the fancy dinnerware and flatware
No....just the everyday blue & white....have gourds on the table, but will get a bouquet of something orange & yellow....have a grapevine & bittersweet wreath by the garage, & a pumpkin on the porch.....
Cute, Deb!
why decorate for just the 2 of us? Have not seen the duckling out as yet. someone better have one.
DH will brine and smoke a turkey that we will be taking to our friends house for a gathering of their kids and their girl friends minus their daughter and us, minus our son. Sadly, he has a day of private parties to cook for in NYC so he can't come home. They will cook a regular turkey. We will be cooking a bunch of sides and a pie or two.as will they, so no shortage of food. We will set up a huge buffet table in the kitchen but eat in their formal dining room of their historic old Nantucket home. Perfect spot to feast.
DH smokes lots of turkeys so I will get his brine recipe and post it. They are always great.
Robindog, After reading about Kugeli Grated Potato, I may have to make those too. Patti
last year I had a bunch of autumn dried flowers---rounded shape in a bowl....... with a bunch (3 I think) of big curved brown and white speckled feathers coming out from one end and a crooked necked flower pod out the other (raised) looked like a turkey. Sounds bad---looked good.
One year I piled yams and nuts (walnuts in shell, hazelnuts, etc) (gave them all a soft sheen from cooking oil rubbed on with a rag --brightened up the 'wood' of the nuts and made the potatoes look great too) in a clear bowl and it was simple but it was nice. I placed nandina berries (still on the branch) all around the bottom of the bowl (on the outside sitting on the tablecloth) I could have added a few cinnamon sticks but didn't.
All of my daughters live near-by. We will go to #3's for dinner and games.
Its potluck except DD will bake turkey.mashed potatos .We will take a pie,DD#1 will bring pumpkin rizotto.
DD#4 will make Apple Caramel tort.

Lucky for you. Our 3 daughters are spread across the country. Jumper 2 is the closest in Ohio.
Hey Jo - happy thanksgiving
(and to everyone else) I hope your day whether busy/crazy or quiet is a great one.
here is a good show for thanksgiving
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlzaU_HQ8Fg
Yes - been watching that the past few years. Gets bigger each year and now the Mythbusters guys are hosting. Now a three-hour show!
I set the dvr for the discovery channel .. thought it was 2 hours.. will have to check the science channel listing
Pumpkin risotto sounds yummy!
uh... yeah the science channel has an extra hour... thanks!!!
Anyone hosting a big crowd?? 20 or more? Luckily it will be small for us.
not me this year
No big crowds anymore.
The daughter I live with used to bring foreign students home to dinner. That was in the 70's -80's I think.
The most we ever had was 12 including myself and four daughters.
Great fun.
Victor, when I first looked at your post, I thought you asked if anyone was missing a big cow. I did just get up, so am still a little fuzzy, or a lot fuzzy! Too early for speed reading.
Only 2 of us, wish it was a few more. Many years ago I invited a co-worker who would have been alone, picked her up and took her home, and on the way home, she told me everything she didn't like about it.
OMG Deb. No wonder she was alone.
The year we had so many students ,the turkey smoked so much it set off the alarm. Not to be outdone .We had a fire in the fireplace. In order to remove the smoke. I turned on the huge attic fan( before central air) and it drew the smoke down the chimney and filled the entire house before we could get to it.
Those were the good o;d days.
Wow JoAnne, that's smoking a turkey!
oh geeze... my mom did that to baked ziti one year
The zitti must have been like a rock in the pan.
a black rock... and since we all goofed around about it.. my mom got so mad she ate it anyway... she showed us!!... LOL
Now THATS stuborn
my family can be pretty ruthless with busting chops... typical dis functional family ... 2 years ago my sister accidentally set fire to her napkin with the candle on the table.. got all ashes in the mashed potatoes ... she will never hear the end of it... and we will never have real candles again.. LOL
We enjoy good natured mockery. Its better than being ignored altogether.
Only 5 of us this year, unless it snows in Rochester....then my brother & SIL will be here, too.
I don't think we'll get any snow Robin.
OneWish
My brother LOCKED the turkey in the oven --it went to self clean.
Locked it up good.
RFOL or what-ever. Thats the best story yet.
GF husband and his buddy cooked the turkey with gibletts bag inside and diaper under it.
LOL.. nothing like turkey dust... LOL... wow that is funny
and a diaper JoAnn???????
Yeahh diaper. That plastic pad that absorbe the liquid. Its always under poultry.
We call it a diaper
Thanks for the laugh Ladies!!!!!!
omg.. just that alone makes me laugh
