What's Happening in your neck of the woods?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hello everyone.....

Greeting from a newbie in Ontario here, but a long time lurker :-) A little bit about myself...I am a member of the CF, lived in the GTA Ontario up until July this year when I got posted to Ottawa after coming back from Afghanistan.

I got into gardening 6yrs ago as a way to get my mind away from things, and realized that I had a green thumb. Everything I planted from veggies to flowers just went nuts. Unfortunately when we sold the house and moved to Ottawa, I had to leave 95% of my plants behind.

What's happening in this neck of the woods? Not much right, they predicted some snow, but haven't seen it yet.

MarilynneS.....Those are 2 good movies indeed, wife made me watch letters to Juliette, and I have admit it was half decent. Ghost Writer...why did you call it odd? While we are on movies, if anyone hasn't seen RED ( retired extremely dangerous ), it's a good movie that I recommend. ( I have a soft spot for Helen Mirren, a fellow Brit ) LOL

Cheers

Mick

Marilyn - thanks for the link. Everyone - Do Not Believe what they did to Winnipeg. Some guy who isn't part of any group did it on his own. It looks like a very boring city, with no time off from snow....... And it was said to have taken place over a year..... yeah, riiiiiiiiiiiight!! For one thing, in the summertime, Winnipeg often gets over 100, and has beautiful flowers. The rep obviously doesn't know Winnipeg well, cuz they missed the parks, Chinatown, and our Legislature which is built of Limestone and that's filled with fossils and has the Golden Boy which was sent over from France. There are many beautiful historic homes (whole areas of the city has 'em) and they musta gone to take pictures when everyone was either in winter gear, or the streets were empty. They mentioned ONE mall, and said it didn't open until 10am!!! good grief!! Watch the link, for goodness sake, but Do Not believe the Winnipeg shot..... Winnipeg is a beautiful city, and some of the things I miss most about living there are the architecture, and the long, hot summers. (Calgary is much more temperate, so has shorter summers).

Calgary was portrayed by the City of Calgary, so it was much, much better.

Welcome Mick ^_^
My nephew is a Colonel in the CF, he is in Ottawa as well having come from a stint in Belgium and a couple of tours in Afghanistan.

You'll love this forum, if you think you had flowers and veggies before .. LOOK OUT .. lotsa great info and wonderful tips to be found here ..
Re 'The Ghost Writer' .. guess I just never really GOT the whole CIA connection with the ex PM
Watched an OLDIE tonight ..Jack Nicholson in 'About Schmidt' .. Kathy Bates was also in it .. laughed a lot, but, basically is was kind of a sad movie ..

As above Susan .. I agree re the filming done in Wpg .. very poorly done

Off to bed .. tomorrow is the day before our little guy, Piper, gets neutered .. gawd I feel bad about that ..

TURN YOUR CLOCKS BACK TONIGHT ^_^

~M~

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

oooooooooh Thank you, Marilyn, for the reminder to turn our clocks back!! I'd Almost Forgotten LOL

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Thanks M.....I completely forgot, good thing it wasn't a weekday :-) I just changed them this morning.

So what is everyone's plan for this lovely Sunday, apart from lazying around? LOL

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

As anyone in the forum might be able to tell ya Mitch .. we have a PUPPY in the house here who has a HABIT of wakening anywhere btw 0200 and 0400 .. Last night was NO different, so, I got the ULTIMATE pleasure of turning 0315 BACK to 0215 .. man .. did THAT feel good !!

Looks as though Thunder Bay is going to have another sunny, but cool, day .. maybe putz around putting all the summer flotsam and jetsom away .. should clear away the dogs enclosure of toys as well .. most of the plastic balls are frozen solid now.
Making a pumpkin pie I do know that .. got another pie pumpkin rendered down.

Guess I'll sit and stare at my BRAND NEW washer for a bit and PICTURE myself using them .. after we drop Piper at the vets tomorrow I am off to the laundromat yet again .. gotta tell ya though .. you guys would be proud of me .. I am so flippin ORGANIZED now .. I have 3 bags, lights, darks and reds .. have the detergent all parceled out and the fabric softener as well .. mind you ... I am STILL doing a 'slow boil' .. the delivery of the new circuit board this Wednesday had best be THE FIX or I very well may BLOW a gasket myself !!!

I hope everybody revelled in the delight of an extra hours sleep ^_^

Mick - welcome. Where are you in Ottawa? When I'm not in Vancouver visiting family, I'm in the east end of Ottawa and would be happy to share some plants to help your garden get established.

Marilynne - what a bummer on the washer. Good idea to keep a log of the problems and your expenses and go for compensation.

Good news on the prosthesis.

We survive babysitting a 2-yr old last night while her parents went out and stayed in a hotel. Took a long time to settle her down. She would indicate that she understood that her parents were out and were coming back, but when left alone, she screamed for them until I finally laid down with her for about 30 minutes. This morning - not one word about where were Mommy and Daddy.

Oh I wondered why this thread was so quiet - I forgot to 'watch' it!

Welcome Mick!

Foster Journey went to his new home on Wed. and on Thursday I finalised the adoption of a couple of pups we have had in foster care - actually the foster family and their adult son adopted the two! Then yesterday got a call to take in a 6 mos pup- family bought on a whim after an old dog died and realise dont have time for the pup. Sorted out a foster home quickly and she will pick up the pup today or Tuesday. I dont believe in wasting time when somebody wants to surrender a dog- figure the quicker out of the home the better. But we are sort of short foster homes at the moment so hope no more for a bit.

Yesterday getting ready to go to LH I dropped my upper denture on the bathroom slate floor and cracked off a piece- at the back and fortunately I can still wear them comfortably- good thing - would not have wanted to do tours when toothless! There is a denture clinic very near me and I have been thinking about switching as it is time for a reline- now I will be on the phone to them tomorrow bright and early!
Weather has still been nice but apparently will change this evening and maybe some snow tomorrow!

I am starting to sew some dog beds again but maybe I should get out in the yard and finish cutting down the last of the perennials!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

ViolaAnn....I am in the eastend as well, Orleans to be specific. Small world as they say?

When we took possession of the house in July, this is what it looked like in the yard

What I have done so far since then, notice the transformation round the hot tub, side gate and yard

Mick - I'm in Beacon Hill north - just west of the green belt. Looks like you've done quite a lot of work in a short time.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

ViolaAnn..............So what kind of seeds and plants do you have to spare?

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

WB Viola, I sure don't envy you the GD angst with Mum and Dad gone, but, it seems Leila was okee dokee.

Got the dogs enclosure tidied up, just left a couple of toys .. were it to do the 'S' word I could scoot out and retrieve them easily.

Started up the Chimenea around 1pm and just kinda sat there vegetating in the WONDERFUL temps .. I think we may have reached 10C.

Mick .. I apologize for calling you 'Mitch' . The pics of your yard are amazing, you have certainly done a lot of work .. maybe Viola (Ann) can give you some of her Hosta plants (to DIE for)

Firing up the Barbie .. and coming to grips with a darker evening ..

Hi again,

I'll have a few misc. perennials. Mostly I'm into hostas and while I'll likely give SOME away, I'm going to have a sale in the spring. Will give at least half the proceeds to my church renovation (a $2 million project). I got some of the varieties divided this autumn. Have a list of what I think I might be able to divide in the spring.

What part of the city are YOU in, syndicate?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Evening all, just home but a few hours, unpacking, got to tell you all those girls give the phrase 'shop till you drop' a new meaning..I am completely exhausted and you know me, takes much for me to get tired...going to read all your posts tomorrow, I'll be more awake and plenty of time to chat..

Welcome Mick...

Big WAVE to all of you!!!!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Viola....I am just off 10th line in Orleans. I'll love to see pics of your infamous Hostas if you don't mind and a list of what you have? Also I'll like to attend your sale, so take this as a RSVP before all the good stuff goes :-)

Mick

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

HEY Betty .. glad to see you made it home .. will look forward to hearing about the trip ..

Mick .. sounds as if you and Ann might strike a deal with the Hostas .. awesome ^_^

Carol good luck with your upper denture .. get this ... I started to use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth .. my teeth were not bothering me, I got the paste as a freebie from my dentist .. well .. since I started using it, my teeth ARE bothering me, so, I am going back to my run of the mill bland as sand stuff ..

Kind of know I am going to have a chore ahead of me in a bit .. Piper usually goes into his crate, gets a treat, and goes to sleep .. tonight, NO TREAT as he can have nothing by mouth after 6pm .. he had a nice supper .. so .. we'll just have to see how the next few hours go. I am such a SUCK !!!!!!!!!!

Hope everyone has just a super upcoming week ^_^

~M~

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Good heavens Marilyn- I presume he is having surgery in the morning? Seems to me the vets we use ( for the rescues) say nothing to eat after midnight

When I still had my teeth I used to use Sensodyne as my teeth were very sensitive and it was great-really helped..

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning, still trying to re-coup after a weekend of 'shop till you drop' wow do those girls know how to shop..we'd leaving the room around 7:30 and go to breakfast and it was well after 9 each night getting back into hotel..managed to get 4 Christmas gifts done and some clothing for me...I was the tour guide lol, was there but 2 weeks ago so didn't have much on my list..was sad though that I went to the big Hamburg Craft show and bought nothing but 2 cookie cutters..ahhh "M" got temted by your pies..

Oh well, Markham Craft show in 2 weeks, perhaps I'll find some treasures there..

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

hmmm craft shows - should be some here very soon, unless I've already missed them LOL Time for Christmas shopping, eh?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Susan, any news???

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Not yet, although I emailed them on Friday to find out when they will be making their decision. I spoke to two of my three references and they said they gave glowing reports on me. So, when they've spoken to all three, I suppose they will pass on their decision to me. I emailed the third one, but never heard back from him (he's a friend and my most direct report to, so I figure he's Extremely Busy - he has added responsibilities, so I'm not surprised).
Once the reference check company gets back to them, they will let me know.........

Victoria Harbour, ON

I'm so impatient when it comes to waiting for something or someone I'd be bouncing off the walls, how are you keeping so c a l m

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Just a quick check-in. We'll be packing up and heading back to Ottawalate this afternoon. I'll do most of my sale my email. Let me know if you want a list of what I will have and I'll D-mail you. I generally set the prices by looking at mail order nurseries in Canada and arriving at an average - then setting my price at 50-60%. When I get home I'll take a look at what I expect to have available.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Partly it's because of what they said, back on Oct 13th (assured me I had A job in their dept, when I told them I was offered another and would prefer theirs...... and I told them I was turning down the other job based on what I was being told by them), and partly because they said "you're almost through" and the fact I've left it in the Lord's Hands and I have no control over that......
y'see, when you pass on control, you can relax your grip, and not "fuss".
I just want them to "get on with it" LOL I'm not worried

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

sorry Ann - cross posted.
Good Luck on the sale ^_^

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

ViolaAnn...I'll like a list of what you have for sale please

Mick

Victoria Harbour, ON

I'll be watching as well Ann..

You've more patience than me Susan, it would be driving me insane just waiting, guess you are filling in your days with sewing though..accomplishing much...

Rather tired, most I think I'll accomplish is getting the sewing machine out into the craft room tonight and who knows, might even try to shorten the pants to the sets I purchased done so I can wear them and be comfy.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

hahahahaha "accomplishing much".... NOT - just woke up, I fell asleep watching an HGTV show......
We've invited a friend over for dinner, cuz he & I are part of the church board and there's a meeting tonight. He doesn't have a car, and lives quite a-ways away from here. As he's in the neighbourhood already, I thought it would be easier for him to come here and eat, then we go to the meeting together, at 7pm tonight.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Aren't you kind, what are you having for din/din? maybe I could rush over and eat with you...ahhh you got to rest this afternoon, my turn is coming..

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Going to have pork chops, and there's 4, with only 3 here for dinner - have an extra one, Just For You, Betty! Yams and sauteed mushrooms, plus broccoli..... sound good to you? Oh, and Apple Crumble for dessert.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Drats, highway traffic is the pitz, don't think I'd make it on time!!!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

won't you fly here? I understand West Jet has discounts!!!

Victoria Harbour, ON

wish I could..perhaps another night when I invite myself a little earlier..hmmm maybe Calgary Stampede brunch..lol

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

HEY - that sounds Great, Betty! hmmmm would hope we're in a house by then.... IF the City is decent to us and we can sell the mobile.....

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

The deed is done (pic attached) ... Piper was a little trooper to be sure ..
Now we just have to deal with the dang COLLAR that will have to stay on for a week to ten days ..
He is in perfect shape .. and the tech cut the fur from round his eyes, no way we could do that.
He's pretty sleepy right now .. but .. he has piddled and had a drink .. 2 MUSTS ^_^

Susan .. like Betty, I would be a basket case waiting. I once applied to move from one unit in the hospital I was working at to another unit .. I had all the proper training, had kept up with all the new innovations etc .. I waited, 2 days, then 4 days, then I went to the head nurse of the unit I wanted to switch to (she was doing the hiring) .. here she was on vacation for 3 weeks !!!
Good luck ...

Off to cook dinner ..

Here's wee Piper

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

awwwww wee Piper is so sweet, and I'm hoping his collar isn't bothering him. 10 days is short to us, but long to furries......

It's been almost a month since my first interview for this job (Oct 13th), so hoping they get busy on it...... but they're so busy without having an assistant, it's the reason they Need One!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

M- there are options to the collar! Of course some dogs just dont bother the incision so they don't need one. I needed to do something with foster Journey as he had pulled the stitshes and licked the incision open before he reached me. I didnt want to put a collar on him ( poor guy never even had a regular collar on until he came here) so I got a pair of panties for him "bitches britches" They worked beautifully, covered the incision but left the penis free so I did not even have to take them off when he went out to pee. Pet supply stores will have them- They were made for females in heat but are useful or other problems also.

Wow there is a lot going on around here - I have been away for awhile. My sister was in Fredericton at a conference and I went to spend a few days with her. Had a wonderful time, ate in a lot of good places, took in a few Christmas craft fairs and went to see the Rankin family concert on Sunday night.
It was Abby's first stay in a kennel and they say she did well but she came home with a terrible bout of diarrhea - brought her own food with her so must just be from stress. She is certainly glad to be home. It was the worst experience leaving her there but I know she was well cared for - just a lot different than what she is used to.
Rain here and LOTS of it. Started Thursday and is still raining hard. We are up to about 200mm now and not supposed to let up till Wednesday. Some places in Nova Scotia have had 450 - 500 mm. Just amazing!
Had trouble with my basement flooding in the spring and had a fellow in to fix it and he did a wonderful job - it is dry as a bone now! I worried about that all the time I was away. It was really nice to get away but even nicer to be home again.
Welcome Mick!

Oh Marilyn - Piper is soooo cute! My granddog Lola just went to be spayed last week. She is weighing in at 55lbs now and is 5 months old tomorrow. What a huge dog she is going to be!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

The Rankin Family - lucky you!! My DD had given me a DVD (playable in my 'puter) a long time ago (before DVD players were available) and it was a Fundraiser for some charity of the Rankin Family (most of the proceeds of the sale of them went to the charity).
When our home was robbed, it was one of the things that was taken and I haven't been able to replace it. Wish I could.........
