Yes, it is worth the risk! I've already mailed the seeds.:-)
Group Seed Swap 2010
Today I received swap seeds from: Helena and Emma.
I have a question for Emma though ...
I received a bubble envie with 9 packets of seeds. 3 packets each were placed inside 3 larger baggies. You mentioned in your note that they were for Tony, Nicole, and me. You mailed the other seeds to the others in the swap? Not sure why you did that?
You also have each baggies marked with numbers? Is there some reason they are marked? Did everyone get the same seeds or did you send each person different seeds? It appears that the numbers on each baggie represent a specific mix of seeds? Or does each baggie have a seeds of a specific cultivar/cross? I am a little confused on why you have a numbering system. I was expecting everyone to get a particular mix of I. nil seeds from each swap member or donor. Hoping you will clue us in as to why the baggies are all labeled with different numbers.
Becky,
I sent you a letter of explanation with the seeds.
Here is that message:
Hi Becky –
The seeds I have packed up for the DG Seed Swap are in packs of 10-Seeds [rather than 5-Seeds] each x 30 Packs that are packed 10-Packs per Batch x 3 Batches.
Each set of seeds in the 3 batches are different so each person should get one pack from each of the 3 batches.
To save time and confusion and because I have these addresses, I have sent seeds directly to
Elsa
Debra
Ronnie
Helena
Robbie
Dany
Karen [bluespiral]
Seeds for
Tony
Nicole
Becky
Are in the mail to you today
Hope you enjoy,
Emma
I simply assigned a number for every seed pack. Your 3 sets of seeds will have the last 3 packs with the last 3 numbers from each Batch. This way I know what seeds are in each individual pack.
Emma
Becky, maybe Emma was just trying to save you postage and didn't have Nicole's or Tony's addresses?
And, how about looking at the situation like a half-full glass, where 9 out of 10 of us totally abide by the rules. If the 10th participant gets a little creative with the rules, how about we find a way to rejoice in her generosity and good intentions?
Emma, your seeds came today, and today being the year's anniversary of my father's death, I couldn't help meditating on the half-glass-full view of loss not only for my father, but for others as well. Something good has to come from loss - if only from trying. So, thank you.
I hope to do justice to everyone's seeds -
Karen
Edited to delete more ambiguous humor - sorry

oops - crossed with Emma in cyberspace - hope I said something useful :)
Karen-blue,
How sad to have a reminder about the anniversary of your fathers death. Maybe you can dedicate all of the beautiful blooms you get next year from your seeds to him.
One more on the same note to becky is that I thought it would be less confusing for me to send the seeds I was donating directly to the folks that I had addresses for, and you are right, I didn't have Tony and Nichole's addresses.
Emma - I saw that message in with the seeds you sent, but I have no idea which seeds you intended for Nicole, Tony, or me because they aren't marked with anyone's names? Only the ones you personally mailed were sent to certain participants. There are only numbers on the baggies you sent me.
My question is: Did everyone in the seed swap get the same cultivar/crossed seeds from you? If not, was wondering why?
Karen - Not sure why you felt you had to post for Emma. I am simply requesting clarification on what Emma sent everyone.
Karen - My condolences on the anniversary of your Father's death.
Becky,
Yes, every seed pack had the same 'type' of seeds with many being from an awesome Mix.
Again here were the instructions. . .
In other words, Take one seed pack out of each batch and put them together to make three seed packs = 30-Seeds for Tony
and do the same for Nichole
and for yourself
Emma - It was the serendipitous juxtaposition of hope, symbolized by your seeds, to the loss on yesterday's date that got me ruminating about applying the half-glass-full theory to loss in its various forms.
I better stop here - I seem to get preachier & pedanticler the more tired I get.
Dad liked tidy, well-behaved plants and wouldn't allow morning glories in his garden, but they're still flowers which definitely makes them celebratory material :)
Emma - You sent me, 3 baggies of 10 seeds inside a larger baggie (with 3 larger baggies included in your bubble envie to me). Is that how they are supposed to be shared? Or do I need to divide the smaller baggies from each of the larger baggies to Nicole, Tony, and I? I was just expecting to get 3 baggies marked I. nil mix to be shared with each seed swap participant . Also I don't think the 30 extra seeds would've been that much more to mail with everyone else's seeds in one bubble envie per participant. Is there some reason the 30 seeds per participant weren't all just put into a zip baggie x 10 baggies? That is what I am confused about. Why 3 separate baggies per participant all labeled with different numbers? Is everyone supposed to keep track of what number they got or what? Sorry, but I just don't get it. How do I determine which seeds Nicole, Tony, and I get from you?

Karen, I am glad you get to grow some beautiful morning glorys and think of your Father when you look at them. :)
it is very nice that Karen (gardener2005) and Emma have both donated seeds to the swap!
Emma - I am dmailing you for clarification.
Thank You Karen2005 for the seeds you have donated.
It will be nice to grow all the Lovely JMG's.
Robbie
Thanks everyone and you are very welcome -
I am happy that I had so many seeds to share
Becky,
Here you go:
Especially the last sentence

Thank you Debra & Robbie, and another big thank you to Karen (Gardener2005) for her generosity, as well.
Emma - How do I determine each "batch"????? Does it have something to do with the numbers on each baggie?
becky ,
Let’s try it this way . . .
Each of the larger baggies [a Batch] containing 3 smaller baggies each - represents a DIFFERENT mixture of seeds
Seed Packs Sent to becky
#08 #09 #10
#18 #19 #20
#28 #29 #30
Step #1
Take out the small Seed pack #08 from Batch #A and write on the smaller baggie ‘Tony’
Take out the small Seed pack #18 from Batch #B and write on the smaller baggie ‘Tony’
Take out the small Seed pack #28 from Batch #C and write on the smaller baggie ‘Tony’
Step #2
Take out the small Seed pack #09 from Batch #A and write on the smaller baggie ‘Nicole’
Take out the small Seed pack #19 from Batch #B and write on the smaller baggie ‘Nicole’
Take out the small Seed pack #29 from Batch #C and write on the smaller baggie ‘Nicole’
Step #3
The remaining 3 baggies of seeds, #10 #20 #30 will be for ‘becky’
You see, each of the larger baggies contain a DIFFERENT mixture of seeds...
I suppose I could have labeled each of the larger baggies as Mixture A, Mixture B and Mixture C
( in fact why don't you do *that* right now, label each of the different larger baggies as A, B and C ),
so in order for each person to get one packet of Mixture A, Mixture B and Mixture C, they need to get 1 small baggie from each of the larger baggies each of which contains a different mixture . . .
Which will then be this:
Seed Packs Sent to becky
#08 #09 #10 BATCH-MIXTURE 'A'
#18 #19 #20 BATCH-MIXTURE 'B'
#28 #29 #30 BATCH-MIXTURE 'C'
I hope these additional instructions will clarify the procedure . . .
To all that receive these seed packs from me, if when you plant your seeds, you will mark each with the numbers from which the seeds came out of, I will be able to ID what your MGs are should there be any questions. Also remembering that some of these are from my *Crosses*, you could get something entirely different from what I grew. So this will be fun to see how these grow out. In fact almost all that I sent are from my *Crosses*. Additionally, there should be several ‘Speckled’ included
Emma
Emma - I am glad you clarified that! You had sent me three sets of 3 baggies each in large baggies. I thought maybe you had already bagged them for me to just add to Nicole and Tony's bubble envies. Definitely was confusing!
So ... let me understand this ...
You sent different seeds to everyone? Each seed is from a different vine? Are these fresh seeds from this year or older seeds from previous grow-outs from earlier years? Are these crosses or established cultivars like Rose Silk? (I still have 3 baggies of Rose Silk from previous year's trades with you.) So you basically know what you sent each person and you mailed to them personally to make sure they got the seeds you wanted them to get?
I am planning to share 1 seed of each cross/cultivar from the same vine with everyone. So everyone will get seeds from the same vine that I grew. Some of those seeds might be crosses, some might come true to the parent vine. I don't mark crosses on my vines, so anything is possible! That way everyone has the same odds of getting something unusual. Or getting something true! :-)
Becky, I have a question, here, when you do these swaps, are they swaps and no-one has to send seeds back to anyone? Or is this an expected payback arrangement? I'm just curious because it is beginning to sound different than other swaps.
A.
No paybacks A. unless of course someone wants too. Nothing expected, all for fun!
Antoinette - It is a once a year seed swap. The participants each send seeds to share and get back seeds in return. What they do with their seeds after receiving them is up to each individual. Though it is nice to see photos in the Spring/Summer of the following year of what the seeds produced. This year it seems that only a few folks, who participated in last year's swap, grew and shared photos of vines/blooms from last year's seed swap. I hope this coming year that more participants will grow the seeds and share photos. That's the fun of the seed swap!
Karen (gardener2005) and Dany (Dany12) donated seeds last year to the swap, but did not participate. They didn't ask for anything back for their seed donation. Several participants grew out their seeds and shared photos of the blooms. Which was nice to see! There are NEVER any strings attached to any of the seed swaps that I do! Once you get your seeds, they are yours to do with as you please. (Though you can't sell them, of course.) This swap is not a grow-out for anyone, where you are obligated to send seeds back to the person who shared the seeds with you. There are no strings attached in this swap. If people want seeds from your vines when you grow them out in the future, that is between you and the person requesting the seeds. This is not a grow-out to stabilize or promote anyone's crosses. This swap is strictly for fun and to give participants a chance to try some new vines! Nothing more.
I hope that everyone gets some nice vines/blooms from this swap. I know I did from last year's seeds! Thanks again to all those who participated last year and shared some wonderful seeds with me (and everyone else)! I am sure this swap will be another chance to grow some more beauties!
Oh, that is good to know. It almost sounded like there were controls in place for each pack of seeds the way it was posted. Well, good luck ladies and good growing, hopefully I can trade with some of you this coming year...
Emma, how sweet of you to give me some seeds. I know you have beautiful MG seeds and I will look forward to growing them!
I have collected all my seeds. I am waiting for one more set of dry seeds from my Cocoa Chocolate vine and then I am ready to go. It's been raining here for the last 2 days and even though we needed it, it so cold and depressing.
Gourd, if you are not in the swap but would like some seeds, dmail me and I will be glad to send you some. I have lots of JMG Roman Candy. She is a beauty and you won't be disappointed.
Emma, I am thankful for my package of seeds from you. It will be fun to grow them out.
Everyone is so nice here, like a family of sorts.
Nicole. I am glad you liked Roman Candy, she was a beauty for me too!
Can't wait to get my seeds sent in, been de-seeding vines inside while watching tv with DH after work, and have three more net bags full to do and then will get my packs made up.
Gourd, same here.. for seeds!
hee hee - Gourd may not be in the swap this time around, but we can still pelt her with seeds. I wouldn't have thought to send only one seed of a kind in a collection like this, but while I'm making up everyone else's, Nicole and Debra, wut a great idea to make up one more set for Gourd. A - you won't owe me anything in return, either - this is just for fun.
Hi guys, THANK you for the offer, but, I have some specific ones in mind that I will be growing for crossing purposes only and I think I've got most of them already. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness though. I would love some seeds off Karen Burche's crosses if anyone gets one of her Chocolate Speckled, they are to die for! I don't think she has them for sale yet, hopefully some will pop up in those mixes.
Karen, I still have all those seeds you sent too, just sitting there waiting for recall, and I don't mean that in a bad way...."Inside Joke"...
Thanks Emma for your donated seeds for the swap which I received also.
I also received Emma' seeds. Thanks a bunch. Looking forward to receiving all the rest and maybe growing a few inside for winter!
becky re more questions

becky, you have stated numerous times throughout this Thread that seeds were to be packed up with at least 5-seeds per pack. You further stated the seed packs were to be marked as ‘Ipomoea nil MIX’ and not to divulge the name of the cultivars . . . “and perhaps more fun to see what we each get in blooms from all these mixed seeds”, you said. A recap of those statements are below:
Also, I have more than adequately answered your same questions numerous times - so now why are you questioning what seeds I have shared!
What I have shared is completely and entirely up to me and is not up to your inquisition
. . . So that brings me to this:
To simplify, you told everyone NOT to mention the cultivars they were sharing . . .
So:
Why am I being subjected to all of these questions ! ! !
Is this an interrogation ! ! !
Why are you asking these questions of ME ! ! !
I do not see that you are putting anyone else through the 3rd degree - So, Why are you not asking everyone else these questions ! ! !
Are you for some strange reason holding it against me because I generously donated more seeds than anyone else ! ! !
Are you implying I am sending ‘junk seeds’ ! ! !
I will only add this additional information about the seeds I shared:
All seeds I grew on my property This Year
All seeds grown were Open Pollinated
So, Please, no more repetitive questions.
Quote from beckygardener :First I would like it to be only I. nils. We got a lot of I. purpurea seeds last year, so I. nil seeds would be nice to trade this year. I would like to have each person put together an I. nil "mixed" baggie of seeds for each participant. It could be as few as 5 seeds. But the catch is this ... each seed has to be a different cultivar. 1 seed of each cultivar with a minimum of 5 seeds per baggie. So it could contain an example like this:
1 seed each of Rose Silk, Blue Jishi, Pink Kikyo, Gray Fog, and Shidare. So each person would get a baggie from me of 1 seed of each of those cultivars. And then another person could send a different mix of I. nil seeds.
You might think that only one seed of each cultivar would not be very many, but let me tell you that one seed of any cultivar should grow you a nice size vine, lots of blooms, and if you start them early enough ... lots of seeds! Most all the cultivars I grew this year in each of the 5 gallon buckets were 1 seed, 1 vine per bucket. They got quite large and most produced seeds, too!
If we have 10 participants, that would be 10 seeds of each of five different cultivars for a total of 50 seeds that you would have to provide ... 10 of each cultivar like I listed above as an example. You won't be making up a baggie of mixed seeds for yourself, only for the other 10 folks in the swap! If you are a newbie, you'd have to buy enough packets of seeds to share 1 seed of each of five cultivars. Each person would make up 10 baggies of a minimum of 5 different seeds per baggie to be included in the swap. If there are less participants, then the number of seeds would be also less. You would make up 10 baggies for the swap of 5 different seeds each. Does that make sense?
And the cool thing ... if we have 10 participants, that would mean everyone would get at LEAST 50 different seeds, but possibly more if some folks share more than 5 seeds per baggie! These seeds could be stable cultivars or wild card crosses!

[quote="beckygardener"] What I was thinking is that each packet be the same, but no list of ID for each packet. Participants can just keep track of who sent you the seeds/vines when you grow them. When they bloom, then you can try to ID them. It will be a surprise as each person grows them!
This would be more unexpected and perhaps more fun to see what we each get in blooms from all these mixed seeds!

[quote="beckygardener"]The deadline for participants to send their seeds to me is November 30, 2010. You will need to make up 10 baggies each with a minimum of 5 different "mixed" Ipomoea nil seeds (one for each participant). You can add more than 5 different cultivars, but there must be at least 5 seeds per baggie!
Do NOT label the bags as to what cultivar of seeds you have added to each bag. Just mark the baggies as "Mixed Ipomoea nil" "Seed Swap 2010" and your screen name. Once I receive everyone's seeds, I will divide them out and send the swap seeds out to everyone.
Send me:
10 baggies labeled "mixed I. nil" seeds with your screen name on each baggie
oh missed out on seed swap here. just been so bad here since hubby got hurt and everything. really didnt get to many planted from what i posted earlier this year. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1121517/
wow getting seeds from emma is always a treat. everyone enjoy. maybe next time.

Hi Rie - nice to 'see' you - I'll have to check up on you in your thread. Yes, I agree that Emma's seeds are wonderful - looks like this group may be growing as many different strains of mg seedlings as there are different gardens and pollinating regimes among us - both accidental and intentional - all wonderful. Hopefully we'll generate more seeds to share with those who missed the swap.

Emma - The rules for this swap is everyone is to mail seed baggies that are supposed to have 1 seed each (from the same mixed selection of vines) in each person's baggie so that everyone feels treated equally and should get the same cultivars/crosses or a chance to get something true or crossed. Shared seeds from each swapper or donor are supposed to be in one baggie per participant not divided out into 3 baggies as you did. There should be no need for identifying marks or numbers (other than the swapper's name and "Mixed I. nil" label). Each of the ten participants is supposed to be getting the same chosen selection of seeds from each swapper or donor. Seeds were supposed to be mailed to me.
I have asked these questions of you because I do not understand why you did not follow my rules for this seed swap. I received other people's seeds and they did exactly as I requested. And I had no problem last year with folks understanding the swap either, whether they were participants or they donated seeds.
Marie - Sorry you missed the seed swap. There's alway next year! :-)

Ronnie - I received your seed swap envie today! Thank you for sharing your I. nil seeds with everyone! :-)
I'm taking this off my watch list, good luck guys.

Your welcome, glad they arrived!!
