That is really cool about the truckers. Never heard of it. Who pays for the food for the trip?
I've seen one truck on Animal Planet's Last Chance Highway, it brings dogs from high kill shelters in the south to NY & NE....wonderful volunteers. It would be hard for me to part with some of the dogs....
aaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwww
I keep thinking about getting a kitten, but the dog might eat it.
that could be a problem
There are always adult cats at shelters. they often have notes about which cats are accustomed to dogs. 3 out our 4 cats we had as pets were adults. they really want attention. Kittens are cute, but a great deal of work.
You're so right Iris.....they find anything to get into! We had a kitty crate & would leave them in the room with us if we were busy....they didn't mind as kittens, but the male hated the crate when he got older because he knew it meant vet.....
With the last cat who spent more inside time because of coyote attacks on area outside cats, we shut him (with a litter box) in the crate at night. By day he was out or outside. that was the routine at the shelter & we kept it up so he would not be upset when we had to board him when we were away.
He did tend to gain weight & as I told the vet when he was outside he would go & sleep in the barn. He had been a stray so we couldn't keep him inside all the time.
If the cat's used to being free, too hard to make them an indoor only cat.
All cats should kept indoors. They live way longer and healthier and don't kill wildlife!
But keep all the voles, chipmunks and rabbits out of your gardens
Not really. I have many 'regular' strays and still have many chipmunks, bunnies and squirrels.
You have "strays" so they don't stay in your yard...my brother's yard is critter free because his cat takes care of his property
Would a cat help out with this Indigo? I expect he'll meet up with Hank and that will be that! My neighbor next door is our vet, and she likes the snakes. I hope he was heading for her house when I almost stepped on him today.
I don't think so, maybe a mongoose?
Hmmmm - maybe Florida DOES have mongooses along with a lot of other strange critters! So far, so good after 5 days of not seeing one of those poison cane toads!
If a snake suddenly found a human on its territory, it might go elsewhere.
This must be the year of the chipmunk....they have been crossing roads all over the county in front of my car...and many of them are residing in my stone walls. There are cats around, but they don't get enough of the little pests....but, they're cute, unlike the indigo....
DH & his best friend saw a Mountain Lion out in a field last Nov. but didn't have a camera....no one believed them. Well yesterday the Mt. Lion crossed a major road in broad daylight and several cars had to stop to let the Momma Mt. Lion and 2 babies cross....people believe them now!!!
WOW
Wow! Pics??
No pictures....don't know why as everyone has a cell phone these days!! All I can think of is that they were totally stunned at what they were lucky enough to witness. We've had Game Wardens and State Biologist telling us for years now that there are no Mt. Lions here in Maine anymore. Really? I bet there are at least 10 people who will disagree with them today! LOL
Brian got alot of phone calls last night and this morning with apologies. :)
That's the frustrating part. So many sightings but few, if any, pics.
Brian has had a camera in his truck ever since he saw it last Nov. He's hoping he'll get a another chance of seeing it this year when he goes hunting. It was in the woodline that borders the field he hunts in, he is hoping it's still there.
That does mean that Maine has at least 4 mountain lions!
Yes!!
Those big cats will need a larger gene pool to be viable.
If I had to guess, I would say there's probably 30-40 already in Maine
At least a few in CT, especially around Canaan Mt. near the MA border.....quite a few sightings, but CT DEP says they are escaped pets....yeah, sure!
We had one in our yard in Connecticut. We were surrounded by woods and our next door neighbor just happened to have his video camera handy and got great shots of the mom and babies. We were up near the Conn./Mass. border. That was about 10 years ago. That is very cool, Celeste! I hope Brian gets to see one when he has his camera ready! I would have believed him!
Wow, I didn't know you had a cougar, Louise!
Thanks Louise, i'll let him know!
Victor, I'm assuming donations pay for food for the animals that are transported during the trip.
Marilyn, I've seen that show on Animal Planet, too. What a wonderful thing they're doing down there. They say there are many more homeless animals in the south than in the north. Many people have an entirely different attitude about animals down there. To many, they are just possessions, and therefore can be discarded without any thought to the animal's welfare.
Great shot of your kitties, Victor. I would get an adult cat if I were to adopt one. Iris, that's a great idea about keeping the cat crated with the litter box at night. Never thought about that. Most cats like to be active during the night. That would teach them that the day time is the best time to be active. I would keep a cat in, but bring it out in the garden with me when I'm out there working in the yard. Would not let it out at night. Too many dangers here from coyotes and Great Horned Owls (they will eat cats, btw).
Louise, sounds like you're back in FL now. I like the snake here, but then none of them are poisonous. Iris, the snakes don't leave here when they find me on their territory. We have a truce, I guess. I like the chipmunks, too, but the squirrels are a pain, even if they are cute. I could do with fewer voles for sure.
Celeste, I hope Brian can get a pic of the mountain lion someday. That would be cool.

Re cat: On very cold or very hot nights we let him find his own sleeping spot. Now that he is gone, DH says 'no more pets' with all the cocker spaiels & the 4 cats we have had over the years he is tired of burying them.
My DH said that, too, but I knew he didn't really mean it....my animals have always been good company, & I'm glad I have them now.
I can't ever see myself without animals, unless I was in a situation where I just couldn't have them (i.e. too old, can't care for them, in nursing home, etc.). Pets are just such good companions.

I agree! These little girls are so much fun and such good company. They keep us laughing. Their Fla. vet (who lives next door) came over this afternoon, and the girls were very excited to see her. She had a lot of nice things to say about their behavior, after they stopped mauling her. LOL It's so nice that they react to her that way though, because it lets us know that don't mind going to her for the shots etc.. They are settling back in nicely here. Here's a shot of them reuniting with their sister (in the middle).
Sweet photo....they all look happy !!!
