I love the plain brown California Towhees.

Oh, duc! You did send more! I had Titmice everywhere this morning for awhile. I do have oak and pine, but they were mostly in the Oregon Ash or at the feeders. They dive, grab, and run. Much like the dee's do.
This is in a plum tree, near a feeder.

Nanny congrats on the tanager!
Hack, nice pick of the mockingbird and house finch and LOVED the thrasher on the last thread.
Burn, all great, love the purple finch on the last thread.
Tiger, congrats on the new titmouse!
GP, that last pic of the woodpecker and mockingbird makes me dizzy. Nice action shot.
Margaret, beautiful shots.
Meth, cool skimmer shots.
Mrs. Ed, BEAUTIFUL start to this thread. I've been seeing lots of downies too, but have yet to get a pic like that. Today, I saw two redheaded woodpecker, several downies, and two Pileated and didn't get a decent picture of any of them.

I went to a park near my house that I've never been to and it was full of bluebirds! I was amazed. I've never seen them this close to where I live before.

Just this one more. Took lots more pics but they were all blurry, or at least the bluebird was blurry even when it was standing still and the trunk upon which it was perched was perfectly clear. Can't explain it. Maybe the BBs were phasing in and out of our warp/time continuum. That must be it.

Burd_Fotos - your pic of the female Golden-crowned Kinglet in the pines is super.

Methodical - nice Skimmer series.

tigerlily - those are some really nice shots of the Oak Titmouse.

MargaretK - you shared lots of great pics, but I think my favorite is the Magpie Lark.

gardenpom - your snap of the Great Egret flyover is really good. It looks so graceful.

nanny_56 - you say fewer you're seeing Robins right now, at least you're seeing some. I haven't seen one in a long time.

ducbucln - Yep, my bird bath gets a lot of traffic. And with my two one-gallon milk jugs slowly dripping water, I don't have to refill the bath so often. AND I liked the pic of "Stubby", your little Brewer's Blackbird

Elphaba - Thanks for the Brown Thrasher compliment. Your pics of the BB are real good. I have never seen one yet.

Bye, Ya'll

The Ospreys from the Alfred Cove Wildlife Refuge put on quite a display today. I'm still working through my shots, but here's one looking directly at me. Unfortunately I didn't manage to get it centred in the frame.

Love those Ibis Margaret!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Tigerlily, love your pictures. The lichen looks so pretty on trees and branches in a photo.

Elphaba, congrats on the pretty new bbs.

Hack, it doesn't sound like you have to clean your birdbath as much as I do. My birds shed so many feathers that they clog up all three fountains which we have to clean at least twice a day. Love your pair of cardinals-they're such colorful birds. I'm surprised the juvie has a darker beak. That hummer sure looks aggressive-cute!

Margaret, perfect photo of your 4-winged osprey!!lol I got a kick out of the landing of the beautiful ibis. Loved that "looking at you" osprey too. I'm really enjoying all your birds.

This Mourning Dove looked pretty with the fall colored leaves.

Hairy Woodpecker is still around!!

Congratulations Nanny on your first mw. Love that grosbeak and the hairy is so cute.

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

Thanks, Burd, of all the birds I snap, hummers are the most challenging to me. I got lucky thist time.

MargaretK - loved the rare, four-winged Osprey. Cool alignment.

ducbucln - you nailed that Northern Flicker. I clean my bird bath about every 3-4 days. Mine's not a fountain so cleaning is simple. My biggest aggravation is algae. I use a charcoal grill wire brush to give it a little scrubbing and then refill it. I have 2 one-gallon milk suspended over it and they keep it full so's I not always having to add water to it.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

I'm too much behind to be able to comment on individual shots, but enjoyed all the wonderful shots, everyone contributed. Mrs-Ed, that was a super start with the Hawk shot.

I've seen Starlings on my lawn this morning. I didn't have time to record their arrival. ;) I get , Mrs Hairy everyday.

Got a visit fro a Sharp-shinned Hawk yesterday. I think he already had supper, by the time I saw him.

I'm thinking, one of these Purple finch, was the menu to the Sharp-shinned.

Bartlett, TN(Zone 7b)

Great shots guys!! Love them all!

Quick question about the Jay's. Are they supposed to be back in Tennessee anytime soon?? because I cannot tell you how long it's been since I've seen one! My iphone bird application tells me they are here year round, but I haven't seen one all summer. :(

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Put out some peanuts and they will come! Especially as food sources get low.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Mrs. Ed is right. Put out what they like to eat on a consistent basis and they will come!! I usually have jays every day. But right now they are busy eating natures buffet so don't visit everyday. But come a chill in the air & they will be here! Of course, I see and hear them all the time so I know they are around.

I have just started put out the cat food again for the crows and jays. I didn't feed it during the summer this year. There is plenty of food available naturally and they clean up dropped suet and eat the BOSS off the ground. The crows will also will those suet nugget things nobody else will eat too. So I add few of those in everyday for them.

This crow is HUGE!!!!

Thumbnail by nanny_56
Mount Pleasant Mills, PA(Zone 5a)

Great pictures everyone. Nanny, how in the heck do you get the crows to come to your area to eat. Mine fly around, sit in the trees, pick around in the lawn, but will not visit and eat. I love them and that is a very large crow!!

They even snub corn!!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Well shoot...I just started putting stuff out and they started coming to eat! They are very timid and don't come when there is a lot of traffic from the other birds. Maybe try a dish a little off by it's self and then move it closer to where you would like it. I put mine out a bit but by winter have it closer to the house.

This is a new pair that is coming now, so they are still getting comfortable. We had a group of 3 before that took awhile but got so they would come as soon as I put the dish out. Being consistent is very important with them I think and figuring out what your birds really like to eat is key.

Mine don't seem to be that picky!! lol But I did notice they would tire of the corn after awhile sometimes. I assumed that was due to all the farm fields around and that is a readily available food they can find on their own.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Burn, what a great photo of your hairy! I hope one of your finches wasn't on the menu for that sharp-shinned.

Nanny, love your crows! Gosh, you certainly feed them better than mine get. Is that canned or dry cat food you're giving? Hope that wasn't a dumb question but I don't remember you mentioning it before. I feed mine seed, sunflower seeds and peanuts and they won't touch any fruit.

I have no idea what my three crows were doing yesterday, unless the younger one was getting some training from the parents. All three flew to the top of a pine tree and the younger one picked a couple of pine needles off the top. It looked all around like it didn't know what to do with it while the other two crows just squalked and flapped their wings.

Thumbnail by ducbucln
Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Junior then flew back and forth in front of the others carrying the needles.
