What's happening in your neck of the woods friends, Sept./10

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

2nd day in a row, sun and warming up! Have spent most of the time in the garden, got the last perennials planted and moving a few things too! Got the bag of tulips in yesterday but still have about 150 bulbs to put in- will wait until the lilies arrive as I'm not sure where I will put them and they have to go deeper than all the little bulbs. My garden help will come tomorrow and we will get all the containers cleaned and ready for winter then she will start cutting down any perennals that need it and some of the vines - I got a start on the hops today cutting all the low stems and brances , the rest will need a stepladder to reach- I will let her do it!
So much still looking nice I dont like to cut them down but I prefer to do it in the fall

Off to the vet this afternoon with Bailey for his 2nd acupuncture, no change from last week, will go for 3 and then quit. He has been limping since early June, never better, never worse no matter what we do , I think we have about exhausted treatment possibilities ( at least reasonable ones!) , maybe go back to regular vet and get him put on some pain meds to see if that will help although when I had him on Meticam it made no difference.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

yessssssssss - it's warming up, and I love it!! 16c by noon ^_^
Now, I'll be spending time Indoors LOL mind you, I was spending time indoor when the weather was miserable, too ^_^

Carol - I gather Meticam was a pain med? I hope there suggestions of other pain meds that Baily could use. How's Jazz?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Jazz is fine.

Yes Meticam is a pain med.

Vet thinks he can detect some improvement on exam, will do another treatment next week, in mean time resume 2 short walks a day

Let the dogs out last night at 7pm .. Lilly got blasted FULL ON in the face by a skunk that was BEHIND the door .. Piper escaped it .. and .. the skunk chased me after I chased it with the broom .. Lorna was frantic as she couldn't help .. all in all .. Lilly was scared stiff and stunk to high heaven, Piper hid under the bed until 3am .. Lilly is now bathed before going to the groomers .. she luckily (or unluckily for the groomer) has an appt this morning.

Life is just a barrels of laughs .. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH .. and MONSOON season has appeared here .. rained lots during the night ...

Yikes - poor Lillly......... and the poor groomer! BUT it's a good thing she's seeing the groomer afterwards rofl!!

Victoria Harbour, ON

OMG, should have had a video camera on! Did you bathe her in tomato juice?

It sunny, going to be a scorcher today, then back into cold temps tomorrow but got to tell you, lordy those winds are high.

Tomorrow it's a rain day so won't feel badly when I have to leave at 7:30 a.m. to do a 'scratch art project of a racoon'..musn't be too hard because she says we'll be framing it before coming home. Was excited about the course in June when I signed up, now, rather stay home and play!!!

Carole, do you sketch out a master plan for the garden then follow it?
I'm such a 'plant wherever' kind of person because I like the english garden look but think come spring I'll organize things a little better..should put markers in the ground now to let me know where I want to put what...

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Betty:my method is
1. go buy plants, usually lst week in May. I looooove buying plants!
2. walk around beds with plant in hand looking for appropriate spot.
3. leave plant ( in pot) in place for a few days.
4. If seems OK plant
5 If not OK walk around some more and find another spot, Repeat 3/4
6. If when plant is full grown the spot is not right dig up and replant somewhere else.
( Once in a while I lose track of a potted plant and find it later dried up for lack of water! )
Sometimes I take pics of the beds in the spring or summer to see where there are spots that need something ( which is getting pretty rare!) before I go to buy.

Markers dont always work! I stuck some markers in with a few plants last fall that I wanted to move. One of them just said move and I could not remember why. So I had to wait for it to flower and discovered I didnt want to move it after all!

Ricky got all the pots cleaned out and stored this morning plus cut down a fair number of the perennials. I got the hops cut down but not yet bagged. Usually, since I dont have enough space to compost, most of this goes in the garbage but a friend has taken on the task of getting a community garden going in her area and has three 4x4 compost bins so I am going to make a contribution to her bins. Still lots to do but I dont like to cut down plants that still look nice. But it is easier to do it in the fall.
I had two yellow cherry tomatro plants this year. One was big and leggy, the other small and compact. I brought the little one in last week and it is in the sun in the bathroom- loaded with fruit.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

The big leggy one (Sungold) I cut down this morning and just took off all the fruit. Think I better find somebody who likes tomatoes- not likely I will get them all eaten before they rot!

Suggestion, Carol - sundried tomatoes! I saw at the front page that there's a way to sunless dry tomatoes. I haven't checked it out, but it looks like it may be worth a read....

Here is a recipe my nephew has for skunk removal spray for dogs. His dog is forever getting sprayed and the vet gave him this recipe. I haven't tried it - have not had the need - knocking on wood.

Skunk Spray Removal
1 Pint of Hydrogen Peroxide
1 Tbsp of Baking Soda
1 Tbsp of liquid soap
Soak the dog with it then bath as usual.

Cold and rainy here today only 8° right now, had to turn on the heat in the house to take the chill off. Supposed to be nice and 24 tomorrow, hope so they are supposed to come and build me a deck on the front of the house and a new door step too tomorrow.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Carol, going to try your method next year..wish I lived closer I so love tomatoes that are not quite ripe.. just got back from the grocery store trying to find some, nope, all fully ripe!

I'll have to mark that recipe down Laurie..I'm hoping I'll never have to use it...

Not sure if I was telling you all that I was looking for a mini trailer to tow behind my little car? In order to do so it would have to be the type they tow behind motorcycles, nothing more than a glorified tent, but I'd be up off the ground.

Looked at the price and not much under $4,000..little out of my league, said to the good Lord, if I'm meant to have one he'd give me the means to do so...

Went looking at all the models on the internet, gee I want one..saw in London, Ontario a man had one for a little over $2,000..would have gone and picked it up but I asked for a few more photo's and from those photo's I could see it wasn't the best buy..

Was sad, thought I had me a trailer, so I've been looking on the internet dreaming...

My brother Bernie got part of the back deck done but ran out of a few supplies, most I ordered from TimBrr but another piece he needed they didn't have..

On my way home tonight I decided to stop at Bernie's and get a piece so at least if I went shopping I'd know what I was looking for..dropped into a few establishments and no go then I remembered Belanger Aluminum...if they didn't have it then doubt anyone else would..

Explained to the owner what I was looking for, he said he thought he had it, said no but had something he thought was better and he'd give it to me, no charge..imagine...well as it turned out it wouldn't work but he would be able to order it in..off he went to return the item to back storage..

in the meantime...

this is getting to be a long story right?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Again, in the meantime, a young woman came out of her office and said 'hello Betty' was a young girl that did some work for me when I was at the Township, her name was Heather and my children's age..nice girl..we got gabbing and she went on to tell me that they have a trailer in Wildwood Park (on the same bay I had my house) we gabbed some more and I told her about my wanting to purchase a travel camper, mini travel camper, kind they use with motorcycles, said I would order one shortly and get it in the spring...

She picks up a camera, shows it to me, says 'do you know what is on this film' jesting, 'nope' well Paul my boss just brought in his camera, asked me to download and put a mini camper in the Marketeer for sale!' omg/omg I got so excited, she calls her boss Paul out of back area and tells him I'm looking for the exact same thing he's wanting to sell...now he's excited...I ask him when can I see it, he wasn't ready to close up shop but Heather offered to stay another 1/2 hr. so Paul could drive me to his house and show me the unit...

So now we go into his back yard..omg, it's the cutest mini camper, same as I was looking for, not a mark on it, well ok...one hinge had a touch of brown which I think is rust and can be replace...it's the Elite model which has all the bells and whistles..he has me open it up, level it, set it up and all it took was about 8 minutes, had I know how to do it maybe I could have done it in 4 or 5 minutes....

Yikes, this is just what I want...now comes my question, what are you asking??? I almost fainted when he said $1,000. I yelled "SOLD" so he was going away today and tomorrow but will be back Sunday afternoon, if he's back early enough he'll deliver it, if not, it will be Monday night as I don't have a hitch on my vehicle yet..so ask me if I'm excited..sure am!!!

the Elite has a stainless steel wrack in front of the unit for a cooler or storage box and on top of the unit it has racks so I can carry misc. supplies...only thing that didn't come with it was the mattress..told me he just purchased a good quality memory foam for it and would keep it..what a bargain, so I'll purchase the memory foam for it this week...
Says it has a table also..he showed me another piece, calls it a bra so while you travel the stones don't chip the piece...

Will I go camping??? don't know..just wanted one..lol...mostly for when I do my travelling in USA, can bring my bed, food and crafts with me..

So it's been an exciting afternoon...knew the Lord would lead me to a camper..thought it might take awhile but he saw fit to get me one today!!!

This is the leaflet that he got with the unit when it was purchased.

Back of the leaflet..

The canvas is gold in color and not blue..unit is entirely black, customized to match a motorcycle.

Betty - that is so cool! and what a great story to go with it.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Wow, Betty!!! Did you know that these are built in Alberta? hmmmmmm
There are several companies that are in small towns around here that we go through, often. Hmmmmmmm maybe we should get one, too? ^_^
Imagine that, you & us having the same camper LOL Thing is, you got a terrific deal - I saw them advertised on Kijiji for $2,000! Wow - lucky you!!!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Congrats Betty, and I do so hope you enjoy your 'Mini Camper' .. Camperette :-)
Our first camper was a 'Woods Baron' .. a bit bigger than what you are getting .. but .. it kept us UP OFF the ground .. and I felt more secure in it than in the tent we had.

Thanks so much for the recipe Laurie .. Lilly kept her groomers appt yesterday .. and she doesn't smell too too bad anymore .. bought some 'stuff' at PetSmart .. pricey .. and, of course, only available in a LARGE bottle .. dabbed it on her and it has neutralized the odour more. The crew were up at 3am this morning and I would NOT go out until a proper INSPECTION of the enclosure had been done .. that skunk chasing me really caught me off guard !!!

Carol .. maybe render the tomatoes down and make some sauce .. or .. chop'em up and make Salsa ?

Not sure what today will bring, but, I'm ready LoL

OMG aren't your colors stunning, we've got colors going on but none as brilliant as yours.

Such a gorgeous time of year..well worth driving along in the community.

Next Saturday is the Pumpkin Fest in Meaford, lovely drive around the bottom end of Georgian Bay..apples are ready and waiting in bushels for us..can't wait!

Sunny day today, bit on cool side, I haven't been real motivated, thought I'd go out and take out fall decorations but maybe I'll leave it for one more week, don't want to rush things now do I?

Brother Bernie thought he might come this aft. to finish enclosing back deck..am loving it..let's hope it does the trick.

Not going far from home as the man who sold me the trailer said he might bring it later today..was going to go purchase the memory foam for it then thought I'd best wait, what if he changes his mind???

Greg and Mel got a new vehicle, never heard of the make, they are on their way to down and will drop in so I'll ask them to price the memory foam - double size bed.

"M" who knows if I'll ever use it, just me being silly!!!

Have had lovely weather here the past few days, got lots of garden work done, finished up a few things yesterday, today is a 'work' day at LH.

I just pulled all the tomatoes off and leave them to ripen and pass out to whoever comes to visit. Not up to doing anything fancy with them!

My lily order was shipped on Tuesday and should have been here by Thursday but no sign of it and on Sat it is posted as being in Mississauga! Guess somebody cant read! Shipper will try to sort that out on Monday! In contrast a bulb order from Botanus in Vancouver was shipped Thursday and in Calgary Saturday!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Leave it to our postal service to get things mixed up..you are ahead of the game, let's hope you get them in time to plant before that white stuff covers the ground!

I should be outside working but you can feel the temps dropping so put up the heat, made myself a hot chocolate and playing with rag quilt blocks..

It's ok to be lazy right?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Absolutely OK Betty!

I am actually going thru a phase when I would prefer not to do anything but stay home - and not do much of anything there either!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Same here, my girlfriend Ann yesterday said that she could see I enjoy having everyone drop in, staying home doing what I want to do, if there's something I want to do I'm up and at it and could very easily become a recluse..

I personally think she's right.

If I do get to work at home, especially in the winter I could see myself NEVER going out!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

hmmmmmmmm that sounds like me too, Betty!!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

whooooooooaw...... I'm apparently still "in the running" for the position I interviewed for, at SAIT!!! (secretarial, at the technical college close to home). They just called, and said they were being a little slower making the choice than they expected!
I told her I hadn't wanted to bother them any more (I'd emailed 2x after the interview - once to thank them for the interview, and also to give them an excellent reference I'd gotten), and when I hadn't heard from them that I was rather disappointed.
hope, hope, hope...... and pray for me, please - I REALLY want this job.......

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Fingers and toes crossed Susan !!

What a MOST beaudacious day here in Thunder Bay!! Got lots of yard work done, dang PINE CONES make me nuts, have to be raked at least 2 to 3 times at this time of year .. but .. with the sun shining and a lovley breeze from the south east, it was most pleasurable.
Lorna was able to cut the grounds and mulch in the FIRST set of fallen leaves ..

Made Lazy cabbage rolls for supper .. a wonderful and tasty recipe, BUT, time consuming !!!!!

Betty, do you work from home now, or, did you retire?

TTFN

~M~

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Good - about time Lorna did some yard work!! LOL just kidding - really glad she's able to get her fingers dirty. Gardeners need to do that!!
Beaudacious - wow - I love that word, and it's beaudacious here, too 23c, with an expected high of 26c! - Indian Summer is here!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

My ornamental crab today!

All the poplar and Ash trees have turned gold this week, the cotoneaster hedges and shrubs are orange and red and in this nice little stretch of 'summer' the city looks lovely.

BEAUDACIOUS is apparently a 'CALGARY/EDMONTON' Alberta word ..
My niece who lives in Edmonton was the one who introduced the word to me a few years back .. never forgot it, and, at times, it is the MOST appropriate word to use ..

Learn something new everyday :-)
Am thinking the best descriptor from that explanation, would be 'outstanding' ..........

Thanks Carol

~M~

st.george, NB(Zone 5a)

Thanks from me too Carol - I was just going to look that up - you beat me to it. What a wonderful word - one of those words that sounds like it means.
Election day in NB today. Looks like we are going to have a new premier. Sure doesn't take long for the TV stations to come up with their projections. The polls closed at 8 and at 8:01 they were predicting a PC majority, at 8:42 they say it is for sure. So Liberals are gone and the PC's are in. Is one really any better than the other?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I didn't think it originated in Calgary/Edmonton, although many may have adopted it. I'd heard it while in Winnipeg.......

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

It being another nice day and not having any commitments until this evening thought it was time to tackle my 'get somebody to do list' so: Dump collector is coming late this morning, will clear out the pile in the basement and another pile of unwanted stuff outside, the parging repair guy will come this afternoon to check out what I need done and the lock guy will come this afternoon to deal with a problem lock!

Pretty efficient to get them all on the same day eh?

That is 3 of the 5 items on the list! The other 2 will have to wait a bit. Since all these things will cost $$ I need to do at the end of the month when the pensions come in!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Started Xmas shopping today !! Slay me .. but .. last year Lorna was so late in sending her folks and brothers gifts east she had to pay a horrendous price .. so .. BUCK UP we did, and a few things have been purchased .. Like it or not, I am the giver of gift certificates in a REALLY nice card LoL

Drove up the driveway and looked over at the tree .. gosh .. in the diffused light it was just stunning .. I ran over the lawn, laid on my back and clicked .. this is the pic I got ..

Ann - may I say "ditto". It's glorious!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Can't stay long, been home since Monday afternoon ill with kidney infection .. sure got to watch infections, only have 1/4 on my left side and 1/8th on my right..spent too much time in hospitals to be playing with infections..

Thought I'd drop in with a 'hi' and now off to the chesterfield, was going to say bed, but it's more restfull laying and watching t.v. and seeing outside.

About Christmas, lordy I started last Boxing Day, everyone was telling me shhh/shhh but now I'm smilling, 95% done..would be wrapped if they sold Christmas wrap in the summertime..lol

Many didn't believe me it would be here before long, I just love saying 'I told you so'..

Rained heavily all day yesterday, today it's a fall day, mid 50's and sunshine.

Enjoy your day!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Sorry you are not feeling well N=Betty- rest and get better son

Are you doing a Xmas project for DG members this year?

I drove out west of the city this morning and it is absolutely gorgeous- sunny , no clouds, mountains standing tall and whole foothills area is gold! ( sorry no camera)
