What's happening in your neck of the woods friends, Sept./10

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

LOL Betty I dont do that often but did do it the day I drove all the way across town for some special fabric and had to make the trip twice because I left my wallet at home.

Just to bring you up to date with Jazz things are getting very curious. He stayed in the closet again all day yesterday. When I went to bed I went in to have a little visit and suddenly he stood up and when I got out of the closet he came too and jumped up on the bed! And stayed there almost all night, just like usual! Early in the morning he got down and went into the bath and I heard him jump up on the toilet ( has to jump up there and then to counter for food) and then down again, figured he could not make the jump so went in and put food on floor and it looked like he was eating!. ( He also had peed) Back to bed , the dogs both up and Jazz joined us. Get up a bit later , Jazz leaves and when I went into bathroom he was sitting on the counter as he usually does until I get his food out! And then back into the closet where he still is.

So he seems to have got some of his energy back but not quite decided to rejoin the world. Maybe whatever was wrong is not bothering him any more, I of course have no idea but if he starts eating and drinking again I will be happy! Maybe it is not the end for him after all. I can hope!

This morning was plant share at the Hort Society which went very well, cool and cloudy but no rain ! Lots of plants, lots of people looking, I picked up a few house plants which were left over.

A quick visit with Ann out at her parents house - Ann brought some coleus cuttings for me to try to over winter for pots next spring.

This evening I am working a private event at Lougheed house, an energy company I think doing a fund raiser and wanting tours at 7 and 8pm.

Tomorrow is all mine!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Jen, how absolutely gorgeous Allison is, can't believe how she's grown! Ahhh dreadful when they get their days and nights mixed up, someone once told me they turned the baby upside down..lol.. (don't you try it) and it put the baby back on schedule, must have been an old wives tale! You'll have to sleep when she sleeps, only way you'll keep up. Exhausting isn't it, but so worth it!

Well now doesn't Jazz beat it all..maybe special attention was all Jazz wanted, yep, days are not numbered, going to be with you for some time yet.. don't you just hate it when you do something so silly as go shopping without your purse, had I only left my wallet I would have been able to use interact card, but no..2 trips into town for same thing..

When I went to pay for the screens Kevin, owner tried to talk me into taking 4 little kitties home to doctor up..mom died, got a mom from OSPCA to get them milk, she came with 2 kitties of her own, feeds her own but not the poor orphans so Kevin wanted me to take the kitties, he'd provide milk, bottles and food..yikes, almost did it but then knew I'd become too attached plus one had infection in the eyes and the other was sneezing and 2 looked as though they wouldn't make it..would have been heartbreaking had I brought them around and have to give them up..felt badly though.. love church and horticulture plant sales, got a lot of plants early this spring from local church, don't see any taking place this late in the fall though..were they plants that you don't have??? Have a burning bush, had to move it last year so didn't do well this year however it does look healthy so hoping next year will be a growth year. Late for tours isn't it? Know you enjoy them so good luck..

Ann what are 'vegans'?

Have 5 tables in my craft room each set up with different projects, then afghan squares to be put together when I sit upstairs..going from one to the other, nothing drying because of the dampness sooo takes 3 times as long! Might as well go have my bath, put my feet up and enjoy the evening, tomorrow's another day right!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Betty - vegans do not eat Anything that has to do with animals - no fish, eggs, butter, margarine (made with animal fats), etc.
Most vegetarians will eat eggs, chicken, and fish, etc, but not red meats.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

http://vegetarian.about.com/od/vegetarianvegan101/tp/TypesofVeg.htm

The above ia a link that tells ya more about Vegetarians/Vegans .. was a point in my life, in my late 30s when i TRIED to do the NO meat, NO eggs, NO fish thing .. lasted about 2 weeks .. I really didn;t feel any better, and was beginning to HATE Apples and broccoli as I was eating so MUCH of them ..

Jenn .. Allison is precious in pink .. and I think likely 90% of all new borns go through the day/night, night/day switcheroo .. she'll 'get it' :)

Seems Betty Crocker and Julia Childs have securely ensconced themselves in my kitchen .. this having company is nice in one way, but, in another (the food prep dept) it can get downright exhausting !! However, add very appreciative company and it makes it worth it ^_^

Seems the weather will be sunny and perhaps a wee bit warmer than usual for the next week .. what a BONUS. Last week Environment Canada had reported a COMPLETELY rainy upcoming week !!

Smiles here re Jazz .. perhaps he passed a kidney stone/crystal ?

Betty .. best you didn't break down and take the kittens .. it would have been tough to bring them around, then let them go .. I know I would have been like you .. ALMOST do it, but stop and really put it in some kind of perspective .. guess you have to put the HEAD ahead of the HEART ..

Doggies to walk .. well ONE .. still can't get a leash on Piper's collar .. he just goes WILD !!! Am hoping the trainers will have some suggestions .. I abhor 'muscling' him to get it on the D ring of the collar.

Enjoy your Sunday ^_^

Good morning. Looks like it might be a decent day here. It poured once yesterday afternoon and then was fine.Maybe I will get some gardening done today. I need to go out to the greenhouse and get some potting soil for the indoor plants I got at plant share-used up all I had potting up the plants I contributed! Maybe I will be able to get started putting in some bulbs.

Last evening worked at a private event at LH- it was a fundraiser for a French day care- a big silent auction mostly. They had me do a couple of tours ( short style!) and later they were having a wine and food pairing event which sounded interesting- sampling one by one 5 different wines each with small appetisers and a sommelier/chef to discuss the pairings.

Well Jazz..... what a puzzle. After me convinced he was dying he seems to have recovered from whatever was wrong. Last night again he came out of the closet when I went to bed and stayed on the bed all night. I know he has started drinking again and most have eaten a bit too judging by the contents of the litter box. And this morning he came downstairs for his head scratchs while I sit in my rocker drinking coffee! I closed the closet door this morning so he cant get back in just in case he still thinks he wants to hide!

M- put a leash on that pups collar and leave it there- let him drag it around with him, he should get used to it .

This is a pic of one of the old peonies we dug up in the Hort Society office grounds. This was the smallest of the 3 and really what you see is only part of the root-the rest just breaks off.

Hey ladies, My dads girlfriend just got back from Victoria BC. She was telling me about these plants that have huge leaves but there not elephant ears, she forgets the name of them.. She says there have them everywhere.. By any chance in any of your travels have you came across these, or even a guess on what they could be..

Have been lurking here but not much going on here. Really cold here - no frost yet but close - only 2° this morning when I got up and I can feel the bite in the air. This time last week I was sweltering and thanking my lucky stars that Earl left me alone. This week I am wondering where my longjohns are.

Have heard about BRUGS on here .. and i THINK they"re kinda BIG ...

Uggggggggg Laurie .. LongJohns ... I SO hear ya .. was sitting out with the pups a dogs at 5am this morning .. no frost but so COOoooooooooooL .. had a hoodie on over my PJs ..

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Carol - I wonder if Jazz had a "bug" or something.... glad to hear he's over whatever-it-was. It's scary when something out of the ordinary happens to your older furry.

I have 3 brugs in the house (brought them in when it threatened to freeze last night) but they haven't bloomed or even budded yet. It hasn't been sunny or hot enough all summer, which is what they need. The leaves are very large!

Drats Jen, my mind went blank, there are some plants that grow high with large leaves, very indented leaves, poisonous to animals, seed pod is prickly, know the info but forgot the name..lol...

"M" yes, it was just the sad story he was telling me that was leading me to taking them home but with my being gone all day I would not have been helpful to the kitties..wanted to though! sometimes you have to step back and THINK, something I rarely do.

Ohhh look at that root, how many plants will you get get out of it? wow, now tell me, grandma had deep red/maroon peony and after many years it turned completely white..would same thing happen when dividing? guess it would change with soil type right?

Was at a friends the other day and she had a garden full of glads..reminded me of grandma, think I'll find some bulbs and plant for next year..

Sat on my back deck this morning thinking of alternates for my closing it in, bought the screening panels, then realized the lace vine that is growing in leaps/bounds will have to be moved, both in front and on side of decking..if work starts in the next few weeks I'm going to miss out on all the flowers..boo/hoo!!!

It's such a pretty fall day here..not sure what it's forecast for the week is, must check..

My plans changed, mom called and said that she was moving our weekend in Buffalo until later in October, I was NOT a happy camper..that being the case, will call all the grandsons to see if it doesn't rain Saturday would they like to go to Canada's Wonderland theme part..won't be long it will be closing for the season..hard to believe, don't think the kids used their park passes I bought them for their birthdays more than once or twice this year...

Well, I've 22 crochet squares to make and am finished another afghan for a friend for Christmas so off I go and get them done..

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

Tallulah_B do you cut your brugs down for the winter?? I havent cut mine yet in 3 years there about 5 feet high now.. I dont think i can keep them this tall for more then another year..

I'm thinking the plant is Gunnera tinctoria, Gunnera killipiana or Gunnera manicata "dinosaur food" lol love that name.. From the picture it sounds like what she described..

very nice peonies root, thats one thing i dont have in my yard yet maybe next year..

Hubby had an interview this morning and decided not to go in to work for the day so off to enjoy the day with him :).. Fingers crossed her gets this new job, its way better for our family..

take care
jen

Victoria Harbour, ON

Jen, let's hope he does well in the interview and he gets the job...prayers coming your way..how's that little one, did she allow you time for sleep?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Betty - could you be thinking of Daturas? They have a prickly seed pod, and they are poisonous to animals (cats/dogs could go into a coma if they eat the leaves....).
Here's a pic of the daturas I've grown. They're Datura Metal, which means they aren't single blooms. I also grew the large white trumpets, but can't seem to find the pictures right now. The white ones have larger flowers.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Fingers crossed for your hubby, Jen! I have an interview this afternoon at 3:15! I just found out about it this morning. I applied August 23rd, and they called me last Wed. I just didn't get the message until Saturday, and she phoned me about an hour ago.... I excited!!

No, I don't cut down my brugs.... too cold here to leave them out, I think. I couldn't get them back if they died, because they don't self-seed, and this is my first year growing them. Bernadette, in NB, sent these cuttings so I'm really babying them! They haven't gotten a bud yet, so I'm anxiously awaiting That! I've had them for about a year now - left them in water to sprout, and then put them in soil. They're a good size, but I'm not sure what they'll do inside over the winter! I'll have to keep them away from my cat, I suppose lol

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

no i bring my brugs indoors for the winter, every leaf falls off and by spring they look like i planted sticks in a pot.. i've heard people cutting them down to 6" then letting them restart in spring, i'm just so afraid to loose them..

yes tanks ladies i hope hubby gets this job, hopefully he gets the weekend shift he asked for.. you only work 2 12 hour shifts and get paid for 40, and with the new little one, it would be nice to have him home through the week.. if not this place is super busy and he can work all the overtime he wants $$$...

Tallulah good luck today, hopefully it all goes good..

Allison is doing great, some nights yes.. last night she was up till 4am then up at 7 to ear and asleep till 9:30, so it wasn't to bad...

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Thanks much!

Victoria Harbour, ON

You are living without much sleep Jen...Susan, hoping you get the job as well..

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

As I always say to others, when it's something they're trying for "If you want it after you know all the facts, I hope you get it!" I'll wait until I have ALL the facts before I get toooo excited lol
If it's right for me, and God wants me to have it, it WILL happen. I will put my trust in God.
I'm still that "Missouri mule" - I'll believe it when I see it LOL

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Rain, rain rain!

Well I was planning on indoor things today anyway. Cleaned and vacuumed upstairs where I have been sanding, washing everything that can be washed, painted the 1/4 round, now I have to paint the woodwork in the hall and probably will have to do the baseboards all down the stairs to as I doubt it is the same shade of white ( but will see how it looks first!) Then a friend will bring over her little tiny sander for doing in corners( should have checked to see what tools she has before I started this - she has a belt sander!) and I will get the last of the sanding done and then ready to stain! So it will be a while, I only work in little bits but can call it half done I guess. Even so it looks much nicer than before I started.

Jazz continues to seem improved although I dont think he is eating very much but is peeing so he must be drinking -he still likes to go stay in the closet during the day but is coming down stairs in the morning as usual and coming out and sleeping on my bed all night. He seems much stronger, is jumping up onto the counter for his food.

Betty I think we only got 3-4 pieces out of that peony, the size of the root does not tell you what you will get - it depends on how many eyes there are.

I dont know why an old peony would change color, soil type would not do it IMHO.

My peony order arrived today so now I have 5 to plant, went out yesterday evening and marked where they will go but I will have to pull out some annuals ( almost finished anyway) and move a couple of small perennials. Once this rain stops and it dries out a bit I will be trying to get my 300+ bulbs in the ground. Hope the lilies arrive by then, I like to set bulbs out on the ground before I start digging! The little ones can be dug in around the roots of perennials which wont come up until after the bulbs have bloomed.

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

betty thats the most sleep i've had in one night since hubby went back to work..

Victoria Harbour, ON

Well Jen you'll be run ragged if you don't get more..no family around in town to help out?

Wow 300 bulbs..have to say although come spring I find it's so beautiful to be looking at spring flowers in everyones yard but just know I'd not take them out when I'm suppose to so don't plant..

Went for lunch and had all of about 6 drops of rain, cloud was right over the vehicle, nice and sunny now but tonight and tomorrow are to be rain days..

Nice to have indoor projects ready to work on..

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Betty you dont have to take out fall planted/spring blooming bulbs.

Victoria Harbour, ON

how come you hear of everyone taking their bulbs out before the frost? As I said, I love gardening just not very knowledgeable...lol...

Know I have to bring in my amarylis bulb before it gets much colder and take it out of the earth I believe..also have some calla lillies that haven't even bloomed yet but if frost is right around the corner they must come out as well..

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Summer flowering bulbs are not hardy in many locations in Canada.
Glads for instance are not hardy in Calgary. So people have to dig up those bulbs in the fall and store overwinter and replant in the spring. I dont plant any summer bulbs because I am too lazy to dig them up every year and also dont have a good place to store them.
Actually generally speaking I dont plant any bulbs that won't naturalise ( gradual increase in number) . I broke down this year and bought a bag of tulips because the colors - apricot and peach mix) were so pretty .

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Carol .. now THAT is one MONDO Peony root !! Dug up all mine a few years back, and i DID have a deep burgundy one .. I was losing a battle with 'twitch/crab grass' it had become firmly entangled in my peonies .. I moved some to a different area, they did well.
Planted Tulip bulbs one year, one of my colleagues had been flogging them for her son's school, a fund raising project .. never did dig'em up .. mulched them over .. they too became 'victims of twitch' !!
Have planted Crocus bulbs in fall , but am thinking perhaps I should have waited til spring as they turned to mush ...

Lorna's parents visit is going well .. busy days for sure .. off the hook for Betty Crockering tonight .. taking a bunch to Swiss Chalet.

Supposed high of 17C and sunny today .. lovely fall weather, leaves are changing slowly ..

Susan .. fingers crossed re the job, as well as for Jen's hubby.

Take care all

Sky is so dark and heavy I feel as though I can go outside and touch the black clouds.

Tummy is in turmoil, didn't sleep well last night, started out to and got a late night call to say George, the gentleman that paints with us (said we were his harem) lol just passed away so did some calls and then couldn't get back to sleep..today I'm just felling SAD...was actually very pensive when I went to call everyone, had a list of painters that came to my house such as George for the last 10 years and there a line went through Helen who passed away last fall, she was in early 70's, Carol who also passed away, she was 54 and now George 76..gives one a strange feeling..

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

((((((((((Betty))))))))))) wish there were more I could say........

Edmonton, AB(Zone 3a)

Betty , so sorry for your loss of George! and Helen and Carol!
It sounds like they really touched your life.
Ann

Victoria Harbour, ON

They did, you get together a couple of days a week, share interests and friendship..all much too young to die...almost want to take my name of my painting list..bit of humor..not up to much today, quiet, finally started to rain, maybe 10 drops, doesn't look like anything of significance.

Hope it's a sunshine day in your neck of the woods

Enjoy your visit "M" with Lorna's folks...

Victoria Harbour, ON

My butterfly bushes are over 10' tall, monarch's and others are loving it..

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

wow - I'm really a "butterfly lover"... ^_^

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Wow the rain stopped and the sun is out!

Got my 6 peonies in the ground this morning and will tackle the bulbs after lunch.

Threats of rain, snow and frost tomorrow!

Victoria Harbour, ON

OMG think you are the first one to mention SNOW..yikes, that's not good!

cold here as well, have the micro furnace on to keep the chill off..

What happens if it snows and you don't get the 300 bulbs planted?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

No problem Betty, not likely snow will stick unless there is a huge dump which is not predicted - I will just get them in later. Have 2 bulb orders not yet here. I got about half the bulbs in already.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Susan .. almost everytime I hear the word 'Butterfly', I think of 'Goldie Hawn' and the movie 'Butterflies are Free' .. loved that movie ^_^

Just a few more days left in the visit .. spent a very enjoyable day visiting a conservation area, Lorna's folks were treated to some close up and personal visits from a Doe and 2 fawns .. the deer in this particular area are quite tame as they are protected. Many people bring them baskets of apples from their trees .. we had brought a small bag full.
I have some pics taken from my cell phone, will attach one if I can remember to LOL

Betty, so very sorry to hear of your friends passing ..

Still getting up at 4 or 4:30am with Piper .. WE start Puppy Kindergarten next Tues, and Piper starts with us on the 28th .. he is still just SO not into having a leash on !!!!

Hope everyone is doing well ..

Ahhh look at those pretties..glad everyone is enjoying their vacation, did they fly or drive? Yikes, bet you never thought you'd be nervous having another of your babes start kindergarden, at least with Piper you can attend!

It's pouring out and likely will be the same for the next 2 or 3 days.

Carol, let's hope your weatherman changes his mind and it warms up just long enough for you to get your order in and everything planted..

Drats, moms can be so frustrating at times can't they...was originally going to Buffalo this weekend, her birthday is tomorrow..she changed her mind so I made alternate plans, then she called all upset, changed my plans, well partially did, weather didn't help, was taking them to Wonderland Sat. for the day, as it turned out rain for Sat. and now the boys are booked up with birthday parties and hockey games and rep. try outs...so back to mom and said it's a go for the weekend, didn't she *&^%& tell me that another weekend would be better...lordy/lordy/lordy!

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

siiiiiiiiiigh moms...............
warm?!!? in Calgary right now!?? Betty - you've GOT to be joking.....

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Lorna's folks flew up .. only 44 people on the Westjet aircraft .. so odd that ..

We hit 18C here today and sunny .. flowers are hanging on ..

Mom's .. gotta luv'em ^_^

~M~

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Enjoy the visit, ~M~

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

hello ladies,
tough day today, my Hubby got a job offer in El paso TX... i'm just so scared, huge move from canada, 30 hours away from the life i've known my whole life.. different life all together.. Although my dream was to always leave the snow i find it so hard as now that it seems possible... I love the tropical plants and have more of them the ones hardy to my zone.. Thats the only thing keeping my together is the plants i could grow there.. Its the fricken desert!! I have till monday to let him know my thoughts on this.. they want him to go for a month trial then decide, i told him to do that.. But wow life sure is about to change.. I will only see him 4 days a month, until we either move there or he comes back.. Its a big opportunity being that only 4 guys are going down there to run this shop.. He would be one of the man 4 big shots there.. A raise, paid apartment, and moving expenses in we choose to go.. I'll be left here with the baby and my 14 year old step daughter, life will be tough for a while, then next will be selling the house i though i would grow old in... Its just our economy it crap theres nothing here, no future, plus hydro is going up 40% where are were going to get this money...
