Yikes!! you sure have a lot to take in, in the next few days!! I agree, the economy would be scary to me, too...... Wait - economy is crap in Canada? Are you saying it's better in TX? hmmmm ok.....
Another thing to remember is that Health Care isn't as easy as here...
BUT - the growing season would be hugely different in a gooooood way LOL
Well, whatever you decide, I know you'll make a good decision. Bless you in your soul searching.
What's happening in your neck of the woods friends, Sept./10
Jenn .. one HUGE consideration, as Susan said, is the health care aspect. Will your husband be covered by a good HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) .. kind of like health insurance for employees .. but .. many companies don't cover their employees and they are forced to pay their own way for health care, and, it's quite pricey.
Just keep the lines of communication open and make sure you express your concerns.
I think El Paso is in Western Tx .. and it's near mountains .. think it would be kinda nice, but, 30 hours from home is a long way.
Rainy morning here .. dinner last night was great and tonight we will be doing PIZZA ..
Am attaching a pic of Piper helping me do the dishes LoL

Wow thats a big move Jen!
No snow in my area, temp is sitting at 2 degrees , rained again overnight
Yesterday rained all morning and an appointment I had ( at home) cancelled so I took myself out to Sunnyside which had remaining perennials for 75% off. I knew they had some ITOH peonies which generally sell for about $80-$90 and I didnt buy 2 weeks ago at 50% off so was hoping! They still had a couple dozen left and although I had to hunt I did find the one I wanted. Called Julia Rose - of course now I have to find a spot for it!
My friend brought over her detail sander but the sandpaper she had was too fine, product not made anymore so have to cut some sandpaper to fit but what I bought at Sears not coarse enough so off to Cdn Tire this morning to looking for something better - just have to get sa few little corners sanded and then the floor will be ready to stain.
Rain has stopped so better get dogs out for a walk, not gettingmuch exercise the last week or so - neither they nor I like walking in the rain!
Jen - that IS a big move and a big change, but can open new doors for all of you. The one thing I'm wondering about - is this company - just 4 men running it - well organized and secure? And definitely look at the health care aspect. Good luck with decision making. If your apartment is paid, would be you able to keep your home in Canada, possibly rented out? It would give you some security and maintain some Canadian equity.
We've got a sunny, but chilly day. Am hoping it warms up enough to work in the garden this afternoon.
Morning,
OMG Jen, what a lot of things you have to think about and one being is your hubby happy at the job he's in here?? sometimes that's more of an incentive to stay than to go..and yes, health care?? As for the weather, we have snow but they have unbelievable humidity. As Ann said, renting for a few years until you know that's exactly where you want to be is a good choice providing of course you have great tenants..maybe someone you know? Is it an established business? When you speak of being secure and that it might not be so here in Canada job wise, I would have thought after talking to all my DG friends here that we're far more stable than USA re job market?
Wow, funny how you go on and all of a sudden your life is completely changed...Do keep the lines completely open between hubby and you, this move has to benefit you both as a family..now a young one to consider as well!
What a gorgeous fall day here today, they are calling for rain later tonight and tomorrow but it's just a perfect day out there right now.
Last night went to George's wake, not often you can say the deceased looked great but you could last night. I was especially moved by about 30 pieces of his art (pictures/tin/paddles/windows etc) being displayed throughout the funeral home..what an added touch to show George's love for painting. We went as a painting group (all paint at my house) and as soon as we walked in George's wife introduced us all as George's Harem which he always called us..even I who taught him was in awe of seeing his work! We'll miss him...
Called mom this morning, it's her 79th birthday, hoping to see her tomorrow night before we go to my cousin's 40th wedding anniversary to give her my gift..just after speaking with her, I was on MSN gabbing to Sharon my sister, she said mom told her I was busy on Oct.15th and not likely would be able to take them to Buffalo..drats, she's confused..going to mark it in her birthday card that I've scheduled 15/16/17th of October to take her there and tell her no changing her mind! shaking my head at that one..
"M" looks as though Piper is licking up the spoils rather than helping you out..lordy, that's not many on the plane..
Carole, beat you to Canadian Tire..was there at 8:20 this morning..had a set of tools I thought I could include in step-father's Christmas sock..I spent total of $24.11 and saved $72.94 so it's a good day to get your sander...
Just going for sand paper Betty not the actual sander!
Its the same company they just bought a huge plant in texas, and they are moving some of the stuff there.. Only 4 guys are going, the rest will be hired there.. The job is the same just he will be one of the bosses there.. Health care is included.. Its a month trial first to see if he likes it, then 6 months and after that we have to make a choice stay or go.. I dont mind the heat its the cold i cant stand..
then good for you & your DH, Jen!
Glad that health care is included!!! and warmer weather!! according to a friend of mine, from Waco, you need to carry your umbrella in your car because it rains a lot there ^_^
Well it sounds as though it's a great opportunity for him..a month will go by so quickly and then he'll have a better understanding of what is involved in the move and you both can decide at that time, sounds as though the company is giving him opportunities to see if he likes it, no pressuring...
After this summer of high heat and humidity, I'm not so sure that I don't like winter better..at least we can get outside and enjoy winter activity..with over 100 degree temps you are kind of housebound...
Are you and your family close to each other i.e. distance?
Winnipeg to Calgary, Betty....... and we don't fly to each other's cities...
I suppose you mean the ones in Calgary? They're the other end of the city, and they told us we should move to Calgary, now we're left to our own devices..... Note to self - never borrow $$ from relatives. If your job "goes away" and you can't pay anything for awhile, they WILL hold it against you forever, even after it's paid in full, with 2 months interest ($1100) that they didn't ask for......

not in el paso, its the desert they only had 8 inches of rain last year.. hell we had that in one night here and our basement flooded.. I guess i will be packing my watering can lol... they will even fly me and his daughter down there to see if we like it too before the decision is made, so i'm not too worried.. However when you go anywhere for a week or even two its always great, dont know how i will take being there for years.. Plus its Dry heat there totally different, you dont sweat well you do but it drys really fast keeping you cooler..
Susan, first lesson anyone should learn..never borrow from relatives, nor ever loan money to relative.s.lol..
Jenn..is DH's daughter motherless, how will she feel about moving away from all her friends/family???
That might be hard for all concerned..
I thought I'd learned that lesson, but my cousin (who is 2 years older) assured me that it would be fine. As it happened, we moved here and our home hadn't sold, then it sold for $20,000 less than it should have (partly because we weren't there to make sure it was viewable....... we moved rather quickly because we had jobs to go to....). This caused all sorts of troubles which we've just dug ourselves out of. Now we have NEW issues.... as most of you know. Will it Ever end? Yes, LORD, it will..... in Your good time... not ours.
Jen
Wow Huge move for sure.
I know that as a child who was moved to Canada when I was 6 my sisters were 5 and 4.
My Mom and Dad wanted a good life for their kids so we came as landed imigrents in 1965.
I think my Mom did fine with finding friends but now she does admit it was hard but she says it was worth it. Family from England came over and visited and still do.
I have a school friend who moved with her hubby and 3 teens to Texas about 9 years ago. They rented their house out for one year and then sold it. She said it was a good move as her hubby loved the work he went there for, her children have thrived and the last one is "leaving the nest" and has just completed her degree. They are back on a regular basis and she has kept her Canadian citizenship.
She has finnished her Dr. and now teaches at a Texas University in her field.
Health care can be a challenge unless your employer has good coverage and in this case sounds like he does.
You will never know if you don't give it a try. Just think ,you will be saying I don't have any snow........ Look at my banana tree..........
Ann
My neighbours are trying to sell their house, she has a brother who lives in Texas. They have been to visit many times and would like to move there when they finally sell there house.
Can you imagine - no more -20 temperatures, or scraping windshields, or shovelling snow off everywhere, or longjohns. Wow! Big decision though. DH used to work away a lot and he always said it didn't matter how far away he was it was still only a day to fly home.
The moose was in my yard yesterday morning. Not a good picture, I took it out the window and got lots of reflection. Abby took into the barking just before I left for work, I could see a shadow and there it was standing right beside the truck.Wandered off down by the apple tree and off into the woods. The neighbours have had it a couple of evenings in their yard eating their sumac bushes.
it is huge and yes no more winter would be great.. I feel that we have to do this, if we dont try then we wont know.. I of course am not agreeing to anything until i have a good 2 maybe 3 weeks there.. I need to know what this heat and life is there... But it would be pretty cool to say i live in texas, always wanted to go south.. I never really did any traveling, florida once about 4 years ago, other then that its always been ontario and a bit in Michigan.. Texas however has so much close by to see.. Everyday would be new, for a while anyways.. its 5 min to mexico, never been there always wanted to go, maybe now is my chance.. It will be so hard to leave things behind, but i dont want to wake up in 10 years still living pay check to pay check wondering... worst case we sell our house move there, we all hate is and come back.. Yes i love my house but regardless we will have to move one day theres not enough room here for the family we want to have.. So regardless I wont grow old here as i pictured.. Its a HUGE decision but my mind says yes just waiting on my heart..
And yes banana trees forsure in my yard...
Betty we haven't told her mother yet, She says she wants to move with us, and i know it will be hard to leave her mom for months at a time but really she only sees her one weekend a month any ways so really its not a huge difference..
Jen - it will be an adventure, for sure. Just think.... fresh bananas on your cereal lol
Well definitely had a bit of frost last night in my area - I think there actually was some snow early Friday morning in some parts of town but not here. I covered up the pots of mums I had on the steps. Some of the tops in the veggie garden definitely were touched but pretty much all the prennials are fine, still lots of flowers.
Took down the sweet pea tower this morning, going to do something different next year.
I went back out to Sunnyside because I forgot to look for the Hepaticas, got 4 - at $1.50 it is a steal, usually pay $12-$15 in the spring.
Also got the sandpaper for the detail sander, have to cut to fit but it is working fine.
Not a very nice day but at least it is not raining.
Evening, omg so much to catch up on, had trouble with my computer till early afternoon and then had a Beatles Festival in Orillia to go to and just got home from a 40th anniversary part so am tired out..another day much the same tomorrow. Can you tell me why everything falls on the same weekend?
Jen, you hit it on the nail when you said you don't want to wake up years from now and wonder what would have been..you are young, take the chance...can always move back home..HOME is where the heart is and that's the only thing you have to think about, having DH happy..would it mean you wouldn't have to go back to work?
Laurie, you've described getting away from winter so well I'm almost tempted to move to Texas..lol
Susan, what did the doc say about your burn?
Was wondering if the ex could put a halt on your step-daughter moving with you? sure hope not.
Oh look at the Moose, how spectacular to be able to say you've a moose in the yard..when I was at the farm I kept asking for a horse, was told no, lot of work and I just wanted a horse for the sake of having one, well one morning coming downstairs and looking towards the shop I could see a horse running back and forth in the pasture, got soooo excited, kept thinking DH had bought me a horse and didn't tell me, he was waiting to surprise me, let me see it in the field..what excitement...oh/oh, ran out in my jammies only to find it was a moose...was so disappointed!
Ann, kids tend to make their home wherever they are..so quick at making friends. With you having 2 sibblings it never would have been lonely..
Well, falling asleep here, just wanted to pop in and say 'hi'
Lord willing we'll gab in the morning..
Enjoy your evening
There are actually 2 moose around. The one at the neighbours is much bigger than the one I saw. Mom and baby I guess.
We had our first visible frost last night. I could see it on the grass this morning. Turned out to be a beautiful day and more the same for tomorrow.
LOL at the moose/horse incident.
oh, my burn..... well, it is a 3rd degree burn, and it's infected, so have to take antibiotics and put polysporin on it. She also said that it will take some time to heal, but that I likely won't have much, if any, scar...... I'm kinda surprised at that.
Also, she said it was a smart thing to tape my 2 fingers together so I don't crack the scab (that hurts like the blazes! I asked her about "would the taping cause me to not be able to spread my fingers?" and she said that shouldn't be a problem, either.
betty i wont be going back to work where ever we live for at least 6 years, hubby wants me home to raise our kids..
So much happening in this forum ..
Susan .. Had no idea you had burned your hand/fingers .. OUCH .. that had to have hurt .. and 3rd degree at that, you don;t do anything in a SMALL way LoL
Hope it'll heal fast .. I still am a believer in the healing properties of Aloe fresh from the plant on a burn .. mind .. not a 3rd degree.
Jenn .. sounds as though you are going to take the plunge and go off on a vew adventure .. that's what life is all about ..
Up at 3:30am and off to the airport with the folks .. they were back home by 9am .. had just a lovely time with them .. will miss the card games and walks and laughter, but , will not miss cooking big meals .. I have virtually SHOVED Betty Crocker out the back door LoL
Got out into the yard and have some 'end of summer pics to share' ..
First IS the LAST Roses of Summer .. so beautiful .. will hold on to this memory all through winter !!!
~M~
M~ I ordered 2 Stuttgart this year from Veseys and when i got them they were shriveled but i though maybe theres a chance, well lets just say i dont have that canna..
yes i did start some from seed, others were roots i had from last year.. The seeds I start outside in the middle of may and so far all but one has flowered, even got seeds too.. I would recommend it, its fun to see what you get, plus by fall the roots are big enough to store too..
heres a few pics of my seed started cannas
I am so jealous of all the flowers....... We had -5 which froze everything! , canna's are pooched, all but the hardiest things are frost burnt. So I trotted down to Salsbury today and picked up a bunch of 8 inch potted mums at $5. each
Yahoo flowers still.
Now I just have to clean up all the dead stuff. Oh well it is a cycle.
Loved the Moose.
Ann
Just read this and thought of you Jen
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."---Mark Twain
ah yes,,,,,, I did that - sailed off to Calgary, when people thought we were crazy - sold our house, and bought a mobile. Yes, we regretted SOME things, but in the whole, we love Calgary. We enjoy more than we regret....... ^_^
Yes, Marilyn - pretty bad burn. My cousin tried to say she had a worse summer than I, but I'm not in competition with her for "worst summer of 2010" LOL She didn't go camping...
btw - she burned her hand on the oven (who of us hasn't done that!!) but I know it wouldn't be a 3rd degree burn cuz it wasn't nylon that burned her. ah well!!.....
Beautiful pics Jen .. really like the pink Ambassador ...
Yikes Susan .. as i said .. hope the healing is quick .. so difficult to do your activities of daily living with a froo frooed hand/fingers ..
We have a WIND CHILL factor here today for the first time .. it's -2C .. feels it too .. wee bite in the air ..
My thrill of the day is going to be cleaning my side by side fridge/freezer .. and the chest freezer in the garage .. had completely forgotten I had ordered half a pig last Spring !! It was cut and wrapped this past weekend .. so .. we now have to find room for it along with a 3 month supply of dog food that arrived on Friday and needs to be frozen .. somehow I see a new freezer in my future !!
Best get a shuffle on
Have a great week everyone
~M~
Rain yesterday, rain today, maybe rain tomorrow?
Still have things to plant but supposed to be a bit better from mid week.
"froo frooed"? hahahaha sounds like they're wearing pink lacy stuff LOL
I've taken the duct tape off (just felt too bulky!!) and have the fingers taped together, with a smaller bandage on the burn itself. Looks better, too. Still have a bit of puffy around it, but at least the burn looks "cleaner" (if that makes any sense lol)
Morning all, talk about a busy weekend, just not sure how I got 2 'wakes' 3 birthdays, 1 anniversary, trip to Orillia for Beatle Festival (friends 3 young boys made their debut, did 5 christmas quilt blocks for mailing this morning, company...omg, I'm TIRED!
In the midst of this, brother Bernie called me yesterday morning to say he couldn't come and work on enclosing my back deck because during the night one of Charlene's horses got out, got hit by a car, left to die, another car passing came to wake Bernie, in turn, he had to get police to shoot the horse, neighbors to come with backhoe to bring the body to his back yard, yesterday to bury it..apparently police called him and said that the man who hit him called them about 1 1/2 hrs. later, said he was upset and went home and thought about it, hello??? would he have done same with a human being hit..my personal feeling is someone was drinking and driving, went home, had someone else say he was driving..now police say Bernie might have to pay for all damages because horse got out..ok, the man should be charged with leaving a wounded horse behind without checking things out!
Love the Mark Twain quote..isn't that the truth. Many of us, and I mean ME, rarely takes chances, would rather take the safe way..not sure what I missed out on? Go for it Jen..you'll still be with us on DG, we'll keep you company, promise you won't be homesick!
Ah frost, thought we may have had frost Saturday night but didn't, hardly a flower in the garden except the mums I planted last year..should plant more this year...
Love the photo's, drooling here..
Susan, you be watchful of infection..
"M", always nice to have company but nice to see them leave..lol..just routine in the household I think that I miss! Rose, the young student has fit right in, she's just so lovely, it's almost like she's always been there.
Betty - it IS infected, but I'm taking antibiotics
Know it's infected Susan, but it is clearing correct, you don't want to get it infected again..just the old mom in my telling you to beware!
Well hubby is talking to them today, hes going to get more details, and let them know hes in.. So i'm sure there will be a long night of talking...
