Can A California Pepper tree live planted in Missouri? Visiting my ill father at my childhood home in Riverside California I brought a small pepper tree back to my home in Missouri. It has been thriving in a pot now for two years. I keep it indoors during the winter and outside in the summer. I want so much to plant it in my yard so it will get as big as the ones at my fathers house, so every time I look out my window it will remind me of my dad and childhood memories. But I am afraid to plant it in fear it wont survive the winter. Can anyone help me?

Transplanting a California Pepper tree
Sorry, they won't survive your winters outside. So you're best off continuing to grow it in a pot and bringing it in for the winter.
Are you sure? They grow in Lancaster CA and it gets very cold there too.
They're listed as hardy to zone 8, and most of MO is zone 6. Lancaster CA I believe is either zone 8b or 9a, so it doesn't get as cold as it does in your area. You can always experiment if you want, but since the plant has sentimental value to you I wouldn't suggest risking it.
My gardener planted a California Pepper in my back yard it was very large in a 42 x 42 container it needed to be craned to my back yard. We had a very hot spell the week after it was planted and I think it did not get enough water. All of the leaves turned brown with in the first two weeks but they have not fallen from the tree. It looks dead to me but my gardener assures me it is not. Are these trees hardy? What are the odds it will come back? Any help here would be much appreciated.

How long ago was it planted? It doesn't look good, but sometimes plants can be tougher than you think. If it doesn't show some signs of life this spring though I'd say it's dead.
It was planted 6 weeks ago
