I don't know if I was being thanked for rescuing the baby or being cussed out.

Uh Oh! As you can see, yesterday morning I posted my 'Lord Byron' AKA the Red Headed WP at his dormain, this morning? Where is he? In his place there is someone else!!! An invasion of of a rivary wood pecker? A Northern Flicker? I heard the raspy sound call which isn't typical of RHWP ...

Adel, enjoy your swallow babies. They sure are cute. Lucky you were able to rescue that baby. I think the adult was saying thanks.
Lily, I love the red-head-sure looks beautiful. I'll bet that flicker is looking for a nesting place too.
I noticed a couple Black-headed Grosbeaks in the garden a couple days ago.
Great pictures Mrs Ed. That's really interesting information on the spider sacks which I'd never heard. I'm thinking you placed the sticks in the hole. Is there a reason other than providing a perch for the birds?
Ahhh, that's adorable. I bet they were just too long to fit in there. I had no idea the wrens would nest in these particular houses. I just got two for our Tree Swallows but now I may get more of them next year for the Bewick's Wrens. Thanks!
One more question, is that sitting out by itself on a post?
yah, that's in my Iris flower bed. and is just on a post. This house was supposed to be for the chickadees, but they never had a brood then got kicked out by the wrens.
I'm not sure if bewick's wrens are cavity nesters, but house wrens are. They are also territorial and will pierce eggs already in a nest or even build on top. Not very nice, but still cute.

Nicely done with your Iris flower bed. Marna. Question please; with the pole so near to the fence, do squirrel squirrels leave the nest alone without a 'baffle' thingy?
My Carolina Wrens also nest in bird house and bring in sticks and straws that stick out of the houses like it. They're adorable birds. Though, one almost got trapped indoor the other day for they're so currious little ones.
Papa Cardinal giving TLC to his young; while mama is sitting in the nest.

The box is probably 6' from the fence. It looks closer in that picture. The squirrels have never shown interest in it either climbing or jumping from the fence. Thank goodness. That's all I'd need! I put this one out in the open because I'd read that wrens preferred something close to tree lines. But they seem to want to nest in this one anyway.
Ooops, that was Papa himself returning to tend to his young. Good night all, bright and shine in the morning.
Your Iris bed is beautiful Mrs Ed! Love the Nuthatch Lily!
Nice shots duc!
Mrs Ed, thanks for the information and the photo-your iris' are beautiful too!
Lily, papa and baby are just so cute! What a great dad. Glad you're seeing the Nuthatch. Our White-breasted Nuthatch never did show up this year and I sure missed them.
This is a terrible photo, but it's the only one I've gotten of daddy (Brewer's) Blackbird feeding a little one.
Duc, I think thats a wonderful pic of the Barn Swallow along with the others.
Duc, the Brewer's BB dad feeding the baby is in its most natural setting. I love it. How hot is it where you're? Except for Margaret who's right in the middle of wintry weather there down under. It's too hot here mid 90F. and it feels like 100 degrees something out there. My poor Mama Cardinal was just gasping for air sitting on her nest.
Nice shots everyone!! Its been hot up here but we got some rain and the heat wave is moving on...whew...its been really nasty at work. On vacation next week so hoping to get a few captures to share. ;)
Good shots Lily, Nanny and Burn!
Great pictures everyone.
As is the case for some of you folks, it is extremely hot and humid here (yesterday, the official temp. was 104 degrees) which is unusually for our area. We are also in a drought.
I think these Grackles best describe how miserable it is outside in the heat.
They appear to be begging for relief!!
