Quote from adelbertcat :
I don't know if I was being thanked for rescuing the baby or being cussed out.
Me too Pelle, I'm glad all is as well. LOL Adel. Either way, the baby is safe that's all it matters. Great job!

Uh Oh! As you can see, yesterday morning I posted my 'Lord Byron' AKA the Red Headed WP at his dormain, this morning? Where is he? In his place there is someone else!!! An invasion of of a rivary wood pecker? A Northern Flicker? I heard the raspy sound call which isn't typical of RHWP ...

Adel, enjoy your swallow babies. They sure are cute. Lucky you were able to rescue that baby. I think the adult was saying thanks.

Lily, I love the red-head-sure looks beautiful. I'll bet that flicker is looking for a nesting place too.

I noticed a couple Black-headed Grosbeaks in the garden a couple days ago.

Here's another photo of him. I love all the colors on this guy.

I still haven't spotted a juvenile Turkey Vulture, but there are plenty of adults around.

From the bird cam… This little house wren is adding spider sacks to the nest. The spiders hatch and eat any mites that are in the box.

Great pictures Mrs Ed. That's really interesting information on the spider sacks which I'd never heard. I'm thinking you placed the sticks in the hole. Is there a reason other than providing a perch for the birds?

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh no, I had NOTHING to do with stick placements! Housewrens build their nests of twigs. Handsome Chet the wren left these hanging out. I do not know why.

Ahhh, that's adorable. I bet they were just too long to fit in there. I had no idea the wrens would nest in these particular houses. I just got two for our Tree Swallows but now I may get more of them next year for the Bewick's Wrens. Thanks!

One more question, is that sitting out by itself on a post?

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

yah, that's in my Iris flower bed. and is just on a post. This house was supposed to be for the chickadees, but they never had a brood then got kicked out by the wrens.

I'm not sure if bewick's wrens are cavity nesters, but house wrens are. They are also territorial and will pierce eggs already in a nest or even build on top. Not very nice, but still cute.

Nicely done with your Iris flower bed. Marna. Question please; with the pole so near to the fence, do squirrel squirrels leave the nest alone without a 'baffle' thingy?

My Carolina Wrens also nest in bird house and bring in sticks and straws that stick out of the houses like it. They're adorable birds. Though, one almost got trapped indoor the other day for they're so currious little ones.

The Brown Headed Nuthatch doesn't come to the feeder as often, they come and go infrequently. I'm glad when when they do return. Small birds, roughly the size of a chickadee, but fun to watch.

The box is probably 6' from the fence. It looks closer in that picture. The squirrels have never shown interest in it either climbing or jumping from the fence. Thank goodness. That's all I'd need! I put this one out in the open because I'd read that wrens preferred something close to tree lines. But they seem to want to nest in this one anyway.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I noticed my Wrens will 'stalk' chipmonds on the ground when they get close to their nest above. So I was just wondering. Thanks Marna.

Ooops, that was Papa himself returning to tend to his young. Good night all, bright and shine in the morning.

Bright and shine birders! Wishing you a beautiful birding day.

Your Iris bed is beautiful Mrs Ed! Love the Nuthatch Lily!
Nice shots duc!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Mrs Ed, thanks for the information and the photo-your iris' are beautiful too!

Lily, papa and baby are just so cute! What a great dad. Glad you're seeing the Nuthatch. Our White-breasted Nuthatch never did show up this year and I sure missed them.

This is a terrible photo, but it's the only one I've gotten of daddy (Brewer's) Blackbird feeding a little one.

This very young Oriole was fascinated with its reflection in the top of our deck railing and kept trying to peck at it.

I thought this juv. Oriole looked pretty in the light.

Duc, I think thats a wonderful pic of the Barn Swallow along with the others.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Duc, the Brewer's BB dad feeding the baby is in its most natural setting. I love it. How hot is it where you're? Except for Margaret who's right in the middle of wintry weather there down under. It's too hot here mid 90F. and it feels like 100 degrees something out there. My poor Mama Cardinal was just gasping for air sitting on her nest.

Like Pelle, I like the Barn Swallow in the creek, especially seeing the water droplets surrounding it. Refreshing!

Here is my second day seeing the Northern Flicker on top of the Red Headed's home. I meant the Red Headed Woodpecker. That's. :-)

Duc, you juvie oriole is pretty! Seems our orioles are starting to leave already. I haven't seen a mature oriole for 3 days now. And very few juvies!

This Mourning Dove was trying to coaxes her sick mate out of the road. A car went by, and the sick bird didn`t move. The driver avoided him though, and his mate came back, to try to get him out of the road. It finally succeeded, to get it to move in the neighbor`s yard.

Nice Pix everyone, the Male Cardinal was protesting loudly for me to add some food in the feeder this morning.

This Mourning Dove looked different to me...could it be a juvie? If not, what does a juvie MD look like?

Great pictures everyone.

As is the case for some of you folks, it is extremely hot and humid here (yesterday, the official temp. was 104 degrees) which is unusually for our area. We are also in a drought.

I think these Grackles best describe how miserable it is outside in the heat.

They appear to be begging for relief!!
